A summer wedding in southwest Minnesota is the source of at least 70 coronavirus cases, state infectious disease director Kris Ehresmann said Wednesday.

The number has grown from 58 on Friday to 70 at last count, she said by email.

The wedding, reception and "dance" took place Aug. 22 at KB's Bar and Grill in the small town of Ghent, the regional health authority, Southwest Health and Human Services, said in a statement.

Wedding on Aug 22---> 70 cases (those reported) by date of this report---> Sept 9.

=19 days.

South Dakota governor Kristi Noem has dismissed a report that the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally last month was a Covid-19 “super-spreader” event, calling the study “grossly misleading.”

A 63-page report from the IZA Institute of Labor Economics published earlier this month that the rally led to an increase in cases in South Dakota and across the county, while generating associated “public health costs of approximately $12.2 billion.”

“This report isn’t science; it’s fiction,” Noem said in statement. “Under the guise of academic research, this report is nothing short of an attack on those who exercised their personal freedom to attend Sturgis.”

Those who avoid being tested "just make it worse" because they could unknowingly be infecting others, Ehresmann said. "None of us are an island," she said.

The state Health Department is unable to track secondary transmission affiliated with the wedding and other events, such as the Sturgis, South Dakota, motorcycle rally, which is the source of 51 cases in Minnesota, state officials said during their latest news conference Wednesday.

Not "opinion". Although, I don't see how this study, can be generalized to ALL restaurants. And that a blanket statement is made by an "expert" that "No one over age 50 should eat out.".

No one "needs" to eat out at a restaurant, granted, that is a "luxury". But it is something people like to do. I am just endlessly worn out on every single thing being a horrific health risk, for someone over age 50.

My husband and I went out to lunch a few weeks ago, and it was fun. We sat outside, on a patio, our server wore a mask, no one was within 20 feet of us. Finally, something "normal", in a time when almost nothing is "normal" any longer. I guess that this goes to, I am done living my life hidden in our house forever.

COVID-19 test cubes, or pods, are coming to the Shore in time for flu season.

Canadian-based QuestCap, a publicly traded company, has invested in 165 8-by-8-foot cubes that will be placed at shopping centers across the United States.

The cubes will be staffed by three technicians that will administer the FDA and EAU approved serology or antibody test via a finger-prick blood sample, Shelburn said.

The sample will be examined digitally by a lab in California for the presence of COVID-19 antibodies. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, antibodies most commonly become detectable one to three weeks after the onset of COVID-19 symptoms.

Test results will be the same day, Shelburn said. The cost is $59.

The cubes, which can cost $1,500 to as much as $35,000 to fabricate, are being built in Nevada by Xtreme Cubes Corp. and being delivered across the country via trucks.

The cubes have a capacity to do 15 tests per hour and will operate 10 hours a day, seven days per week.

"I don’t like to admit it, but I’m 79 years old," Fauci said. "I can’t think of a reason to go trans-Atlantic. Right now, I’m very sequestered. I’m on a coronavirus task force. I go to the White House almost every day.

Although Fauci admitted he won't be "going to restaurants right now," he recommended that if people are heading out for a bite, they should opt for outdoor seating instead.

"If you’re going to go to a restaurant, try as best as you can to have outdoor seating that is properly spaced between the tables," he said.

At 79, he is high risk, so I would think most people in that age group would probably not want to eat out or fly in an airplane, if they could avoid it.

In my view, a bar sells alcohol and sometimes, pupus/snacks. Many bars are attached to restaurants in the U.S.

A nightclub has some kind of draw beyond alcohol, usually live entertainment or a D.J. There are few nightclubs left where I live. Men's clubs with strippers are a subcategory of nightclubs. We have a couple of those in my county.

Bars that sell only drinks are still a thing here in California, but they are rare. In L.A. County, we have the greatest number of nightclubs, but Orange County has a lot, also.

South Dakota governor uses coronavirus relief funds for $5 million tourism ad despite COVID surge

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem's administration announced that it is using federal coronavirus relief funds to pay for a $5 million tourism ad campaign aimed at drawing people to the state.

The move comes even as the state emerges as one of the nation's top hot spots for COVID-19 infections.

Noem spokesman Ian Fury defended using the federal coronavirus funds for the ads, saying that the state "should absolutely be promoting tourism" because it is vital to South Dakota's economy. After agriculture, it is the state's largest industry. "That's how people put food on the table," he said.

Fury said the line in the ad that touts the state as a "place to safely explore" fulfills Treasury's requirement for using the money to address the pandemic.

Perhaps SD should use the money to invest in strategies for employment that don't depend on tourism. Like healthcare and contact tracing.

No, it's not arbitrary. Nightclubs don't offer any form of food service. When have you ever gotten something to eat at a club? Also they play extremely loud music and are places where people (guests or strippers) dance. When have you ever sat and had a normal quiet conversation with someone in a nightclub?

Pubs/bars/restaurants all serve food, and at this time cannot offer live music, or any kind of dance floor. They must turn down the TV so that people can still talk to each other.

Banquet halls are a problem because they host weddings and other large parties where people don't want to social distance.

Too many people visiting nightclubs and banquet halls have been flouting the rules and outbreaks have been repeatedly traced back to them. Even if they try to implement the rules, drunk customers ignore them and the venue cannot control these people.

ETA: all these venues must apply for licenses to serve liquor, the government can legitimately decide who does and who does not get a public liquor license to sell alcohol, and set conditions for how that venue will operate.
