This doesn't even make sense. Florida's leadership has seemingly done almost every single thing that is contradictory to common sense.

I don't even think that there is a statewide mandatory mask requirement.Despite DeSantis, Nearly One-Third Of Florida Counties Require Masks

That has been left up to local authorities. I guess that way there can be zero accountability. Perhaps, local government will step up again.

And these counties probably constitute 3/5 (moo) of the population given they include Miami and other highly populated southern counties, orlando, jacksonville, Tampa St, Pete and other larger towns.
Once the counties established the mask mandates....many more people felt safer to go out to stores more---> spending more money.

As mentioned, our bars here in Nassau County, opened up earlier (than tomorrow), because they shifted to offering food too.... AND have extensive outside patios. The two largest are now doing a booming business getting closer to 100% revenues year over year......

Using an article about Las Vegas in regards to the general economy doesn't make any sense.

Speaking of the economy, apparently, education is Australia’s fourth largest export, so international students are critical to the worst recession Australia is facing in almost a century. So getting international students back to the country is a major issue right now.

With Australia already sliding into its worst recession in almost a century, education leaders expect the disappearance of international students to cost billions of dollars.”

The slowdown in foreign student enrolments mean Australian universities are facing a revenue hit of between A$3.1 billion and A$4.8 billion (£1.7 - £2.6 billion) this year alone, Catriona Jackson, Chief Executive of Universities Australia, told Reuters.

Further darkening the prospects for Australian universities, Beijing recently urged students going overseas to think carefully before choosing Australia, citing a spate of racist incidents targeting Asians during the pandemic.

The warning came after Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison in April told foreign students to go back to their home countries if they were unable to make ends meet during the pandemic, adding they weren’t entitled to any welfare payments.

Edited by me - trying to reply to @katydid's post regarding the states guidelines for reopening and the CDC -

Yes, that's how it has been working in Ohio. Our Governor makes the decisions for our state with guidelines from the CDC, in consultation with public health experts, but makes decisions based on the state's situation and adapting CDC's guidelines where appropriate.

And, in our county, ignoring the CDC's edict to not test contacts of a positive coronavirus case.

All contacts identified through contact tracing of a positive coronavirus case are under two week quarantine, and must get a covid test. Even if the test is negative, the quarantine is in effect for the full two weeks.

Coronavirus cases soar by 3,497 in the UK in the highest Saturday rise in FOUR MONTHS | Daily Mail Online

Another DM link but this one has numerous pics and graphs and shows in the pics what the police in Cardiff have to deal with.

Looks like UK are in trouble with the case increases but so far, the deaths and hospitalisations have not increased. Interesting survey also included in the pics.

It does emphasize that people do listen to what comes out from the top of leadership...in any country. It certainly points out how the scientists who keep showing that being in restaurants for extended periods of time are still causing lots of problems.

Even when the government is trying to encourage eating out to try to save or help the hospitality industry....

This "eat out to help out" plan sounded happily encouraging.... but...

However, a new report from Oxford University public policy researcher Toby Phillips suggests the scheme may have contributed to a 'rapid acceleration' in reported infections in Britain and 'encouraged extravagant levels of eating out'. (from OP article)

Speaking of the economy. It appears a third (roughly 76,666) of NYC 230,000 small businesses may not reopen due to Covid. That's rough.

No problem. We can just order everything online from Amazon and Wal-Mart.

Which is exactly why I have tried to limit my online purchases for years.

I believe we are in for a rocky ride.

It is remarkable that the CDC's edict not to test contacts of a positive virus case, have to be ignored if the right steps are to be taken to control the virus. What an upside down time this.

I certainly will not dine in a restaurant but i do wonder what the causes for an uptick of cases for people who do dine in. I have been tempted but I wouldn't do it. Perhaps people are sitting closer together and not social distancing--- they do have to take their masks off to eat and drink and that would be for a good while and then there is the issue of ventilation--- all of these elements combined are apparently causing the uptick of cases being seen. I wish someone (epidemiologist) would write an article on why they think this is happening.

My parents dog hates me wearing a mask when I visit. Even though I played with him and gave him attention, it is when I sit down to visit. He stares, barks and watches every move! He was shelter rescued awhile ago and has had anxiety before. I guess he has no clue whats up!

My Mother's dog, "Dolly", is a rescue, and really doesn't like men. So, she was growling at my husband. The "bright" idea to help "Dolly" like men, was to have my husband give her hot dogs to make him seem more friendly.

Dogs are smart, Dolly realized every time she growled at my husband, she would get a hot dog! Yeah, not exactly what they wanted to happen.

So, don't give the dog treats to help her get over the fear of the mask.

I agree! It seems testing contacts of positives is a better way to stay ahead of this. Especially those that share the same household.

Let me just say that American students look longingly at Australia right now (as do we faculty) due to the awesome CoVid response. Unfortunately, it would take real effort to clear those same students for arrival in Australia - although it certainly could be done.

I suppose that Chinese students have constituted large numbers of the Australian international student community. That one will be quite the challenge to resolve. I also assume that Chinese students brought actual funds to pay tuition (probably provided by their government - but maybe not?)
