While we already know this, it's good to be reminded over and over and over again.

The US could see an explosion of Covid-19 cases as fall and winter set in, one expert says, joining a chorus of health officials who have warned about the challenges of the coming months.

Over the summer, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention director warned the fall and winter could be "one of the most difficult times that we experienced in American public health." And this week, leading infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci urged American cities and counties to prepare for "the challenge" of fall and winter.
Florida's Governor Lifts All COVID-19 Restrictions On Businesses Statewide

“Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis says he is lifting all restrictions on businesses statewide that were imposed to control the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. Most significantly, that means restaurants and bars in the state can now operate at full capacity.“

[...]

“DeSantis also said his order would stop cities and counties from fining people for not wearing mandated face coverings. He said fines and other penalties imposed so far would be suspended.“

CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield said this week preliminary results of the first round of a study show more than 90% of the US population remains susceptible to Covid-19. And a study published Friday in The Lancet found as of July, fewer than 10% of people in the US had antibodies to the virus.

I find this to be unbelievable that he would ignore what is happening in his own state.

In reading the article that margarita linked, it seems that Miami-Dade county plan to investigate their legal ability to maintain a mask mandate and fine people for non-compliance.

Mayor Carlos Giménez told The Miami Herald that he believed the county would still be able to enforce its face covering mandate but "will have to speak to our attorneys about [our] ability to enforce individual fines."

Your
Growth is exponential, which means that it starts out slowly. Then, as with any virus, it simmers. WI is the very definition of "simmer" as it has lots of smaller towns. This permitted slow and steady, then rapid growth.

It probably took people a while to become accustomed to going to the bars, and to become more disinhibited.

Of course, there are studies that show that Sturgis provided another bump-up.

Check the graphs below

Wisconsin Coronavirus: 110,828 Cases and 1,274 Deaths (COVID-19 ) - Worldometer

and you can see that WI starts to get lift-off right around mid-to-end of May. The active cases are quite telling.

Your scenario is the same for so many cross state areas. But, I believe this is one of the things that the greater NYC area did right----CT, NJ and NY were all on the same restrictions in the beginning. But this would be harder in less populated state borders where the cases are creeping back in, rather than storming in.

What’s in and what’s out – the law of supply and demand during the pandemic -

In vogue: sitting at home in your pajamas (men's nightwear is up 4%), cycling (bikes up 6%), reading for pleasure (books up 4%, newspapers up 5%) and making things (sewing machines and fabric up 9%, cameras up 4%). Medical care is in demand (up 5%), while higher education is much less attractive (tuition fees up 1.3%, the lowest since data started in the late 1970s).

What’s out: Few home workers need a new suit or dress (down 17%), makeup (down 3%), hotel room (down 13%) or air ticket (down 23%).

Start with recent supply and demand. The cost of food at home, where so many of us have been spending our time, was up 4.6% in August compared with a year earlier, the biggest rise in almost a decade. In deserted workplace and school cafeterias, food is 3% cheaper.

Inflation is already here -- for the stuff you actually want to buy

Increase in hot prowl burglaries in San Francisco, meaning that people are at home when their homes are burglarized now, due to pandemic and working from home/staying at home.

San Francisco neighborhood sees 100% increase in burglaries during pandemic

“We have seen an increase in hot prowl burglaries, which is associated with the shelter-in-place order where more people are staying home than past years”

Interesting
I think I’ve recently read those types of crimes have decreased (significantly) here. I’ll try and find a link. Otherwise moo

To keep the burglars away, hang a notice on your door/windows: "Quarantine in effect. Covid here!"

That's assuming they can read.

Anyone can view 5 articles for free per month with the Washington Post.

And as someone here suggested to me, open in an "incognito tab" to make it so cookies don't prevent.

Also.. Today's Dr. Campbell. France and UK numbers really increased, I had no idea.

ETA: He is saying the March numbers were wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too low as testing was poor back then, so possibly why the curves look as they do.

Really good article. Thanks for posting. They sure have learned a lot. Very helpful to have the info all in one place.

Just missing the last little bit now:
“What’s the infectious dose via the respiratory route is really probably the last piece of this that isn’t completely answered yet"

Reminds me of how if folks are allergic to something, there is a protocol to start at low doses of exposure, then slowly increase to make a person ok with it to "sensitize" them.

It seems counter-intuitive to me that there would be an increase in riskier “hot prowl” burglaries when more people are known to be at home. Are unemployment and desperation driving the increase in these particular areas of San Francisco? More drug use and the need to support a habit? Boredom and thrill-seeking? Are those working from home leaving more windows open and being more careless about locking doors? Whatever the reason, it’s scary.

China, WHO could have helped prevent COVID-19 pandemic: congressional report
By Ebony Bowden

The coronavirus pandemic might have been prevented if not for Chinese cover-ups in the early days of the outbreak and the World Health Organization “parroting” Beijing propaganda, according to a damning audit from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

The 96-page report — obtained by The Post ahead of its planned Monday release — says the Chinese Communist Party destroyed evidence and buried troubling data, while nationalizing the supply chainsand limiting exports of US companies 3M and General Motors, keeping key goods in the country.

“It is beyond doubt that the CCP actively engaged in a cover-up designed to obfuscate data, hide relevant public health information, and suppress doctors and journalists who attempted to warn the world,” reads the report, authored by Republican members of the Democrat-held committee.

“Research shows the CCP could have reduced the number of cases in China by up to 95 percent had it fulfilled its obligations under international law and responded to the outbreak in a manner consistent with best practices,” the report said, citing a study on Medrxiv, a Yale University-linked online clearinghouse for medical manuscripts.

“It is highly likely the ongoing pandemic could have been prevented,” the report said.

Instead, on Jan. 1, CCP officials ordered that the Wuhan wet market from which the contagion is believed to have sprung “be closed and sanitized, destroying forensic evidence that may have provided insight into the origins of the outbreak,” the report said.

Assume a report of the US would find most of the same?

I hope you are joking. WHO aren't investigating the US are they? This could have been stopped at the very outset by the sound of it. They took no forensic info from the wet market before closing it down and cleaning it up.

Major holidays coming up next week in PRC and soon in Canada -

So many major holidays taking place around the world this month and next. In the PRC, October 1st is Mid-Autumn Festival (Moon Festival) which is like our Thanksgiving. Last year, 105 million people traveled during Moon Festival to be with their families, often by train. This year the three-day Moon Festival coincides with the PRC's national holiday with October 1-7 being a national holiday to celebrate the founding of the PRC on October 1, 1949, so people have a full week off work, so travel will be incredible, for both family reunions and tourism.

We usually drive to Ann Arbor, Michigan for Moon Festival dinner, but this year we ordered our Moon Cakes online from San Francisco, and they are ready for moon-gazing with family on Zoom on the night of the full moon on October 1st.

Meanwhile, in Canada -

Canadian government rolls out the welcome mat for expats who will be travelling to Canada to celebrate the upcoming holidays with family, including Yom Kippur this week and Canadian Thanksgiving coming up in October – while reminding people of the quarantine rule for two weeks.

And CDC recommends that we avoid nonessential travel to Canada as it is a Level 3 Alert country right now with high COVID-19 risk.

COVID-19 in Canada - Warning - Level 3, Avoid Nonessential Travel - Travel Health Notices | Travelers' Health | CDC

CDC Warning – Level 3 -- COVID-19 risk in Canada is high

CDC recommends travelers avoid all nonessential international travel to Canada. Travelers at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19 should consider postponing all travel, including essential travel, to Canada.

Warning - Level 3, Avoid Nonessential Travel

Alert - Level 2, Practice Enhanced Precautions

Watch - Level 1, Practice Usual Precautions
