Nearly 20,000 Covid-19 cases among Amazon workers

Amazon said that more than 19,816 of its frontline workers in the US have contracted Covid-19 since March.

The number equates to 1.44% of its 1.37 million workers across Amazon and its subsidiary Whole Foods.

Amazon had faced criticism from employees, unions and elected officials, who have accused the company of putting employees' health at risk.

But the online retailing giant said its infection rate is lower than expected.

Amazon has kept its facilities open throughout the pandemic to meet a surge in demand from shoppers stuck at home.

'Loss of smell clearer sign of Covid than cough'

Loss of a sense of smell may be a more reliable indicator of Covid-19 than cough or fever, research suggests.

A study by University College London (UCL) of 590 people who lost their sense of smell or taste earlier in the year found 80% had coronavirus antibodies.

Of those people with antibodies, 40% had no other symptoms.

The research only looked at people with mild symptoms, however.

Evidence that loss of smell and taste could be signs of coronavirus began to emerge from about April, and they were added to the official list of symptoms in mid-May.

Current guidance states anyone who experiences a loss of, or change to their sense of smell or taste should self-isolate and apply for a test.

Coronavirus: Doctors told to plan for vaccination scheme

Doctors in the West Midlands have been told to plan for a mass coronavirus vaccination scheme from as early as November.

A leaked document identifies two vaccines which are expected to be available this year.

Immunising the entire population could take 10 months and will start with the most vulnerable in care homes.

Mass vaccination sites and mobile facilities are being commissioned as part of as a "fairly massive exercise".

According to the document, the two vaccines are called Ambush and Triumph.

Ambush needs to be stored at -70C (-94F) and kept in hospitals due to regulations set down by the Medicines Health Regulatory Authority.

The Triumph vaccine is expected to be the one developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, which can be stored at room temperature.

The document says the vaccines will have to be given in two doses, 28 days apart - and this will be dependent on supply.

Great news. Ambush and Triumph.

Room temperature! Wow, that would be so wonderful and so amazing. The vaccines that need to be stored at extra low temps are fine, but they won't be practical for most of the world's people.

Where Trump Has Been Over This Past Week Ahead Of Testing Positive For COVID-19

Thursday, Sept. 24
In the morning, the president and first lady paid respects to the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg outside the Supreme Court before Trump traveled to Charlotte, N.C., to deliver a speech on health care. That evening, he held an outdoor rally at Cecil Airport in Jacksonville, Fla.

Friday, Sept. 25
The president attended a Latinos for Trump roundtable in Miami, a Black Economic Empowerment event in Atlanta, and a meeting with supporters in Washington, D.C. That night, he held a rally outside of Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport in Virginia.

Saturday, Sept. 26
In a ceremony at the White House Rose Garden, the president announced his Supreme Court pick, Judge Amy Coney Barrett, in front of a crowd of about 200 people. (Since the ceremony, Judge Barrett has met with senators ahead of her confirmation hearing slated to begin Oct. 12 — including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell). That evening, the president held another rally at Harrisburg International Airport in Middletown, Pa.

Sunday, Sept. 27
The president's Sunday schedule included a visit to his golf club in Potomac Falls, Va., in the morning and a White House reception in honor for Gold Star Families in the evening.

Monday, Sept. 28
Trump held two events at the White House Monday: an address from the Rose Garden on national coronavirus testing strategy and another congratulating an Ohio-based manufacturer on a new vehicle.

Tuesday, Sept. 29
Trump and Biden faced off for the first time in a chaotic debate at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, where the two maintained social distance on stage and did not shake hands, but they did not wear masks onstage. During the debate, Trump said he wears a mask "when needed," citing frequent testing, and mocked Biden for having one "every time you see him."

Wednesday, Sept. 30
The president was in Minnesota for a fundraiser at a private residence in Shorewood before heading to a rally at Duluth International Airport that night.

Thursday, Oct. 1
The president hosted a fundraising event at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., on Thursday. That evening, Trump confirmed reports that adviser Hicks had tested positive for the virus.

__

Hicks traveled with Trump aboard Air Force One to and from the presidential debate in Cleveland on Tuesday and to a Minnesota rally on Wednesday. She felt poorly in Minnesota and quarantined aboard the presidential plane on the way home.
At the debate in Cleveland, Trump’s entourage entered the debate hall without face coverings -- or removed them as they sat down -- and refused an offer of masks from a doctor at the Cleveland Clinic, which was co-hosting the event. Hicks was not seen in the debate hall.
Biden’s guests wore masks.
Hicks was seen on Tuesday riding maskless in a staff van with White House senior adviser Stephen Miller, campaign adviser Jason Miller and others.
When they returned to Washington on Tuesday, Stephen Miller and Hicks were seen sharing an umbrella as they exited Air Force One in the rain. Miller’s wife, Katie Miller -- Vice President Mike Pence’s press secretary -- recovered from Covid-19 earlier this year.
Trump’s staff wear masks when traveling with him aboard the presidential helicopter, Marine One, and Hicks observed that protocol this week.

2020 has been a year from hell. My friend's grandmother died in the nursing home (not from covid) recently, but her last months were horrible because they would not let her family visit. They were allowed to sit outside a window (closed window) and try to yell through once a week. The grandmother could not hear and would just cry. It was torturous. She died without having seen or hugged her loved ones for so long.

We have to start putting people's mental health in perspective as well. Some of the things that are happening are just awful.
My heart breaks with these situations. Yet what is the answer in the here and now? Had everyone simply followed the Science from the start IMO today would be very different. Many would not be dying alone. People just were not willing to do it for themselves and others.

IMO my City has done the hard work. Nursing homes recently allowed Family to have an in person visit once a week. One Family member a week.

I guess we may find out if HXQ works as a prophylactic anyway.

BBC are discussing this now. Apparently Hicks felt ill and quarantined on AF1 at the Minnesota rally. Once she tested positive Trump went into quarantine at the WH. He tweeted at 1a.m. EST that they tested positive but he was already quarantining. Everyone gets tested daily and they will have doctors travelling with them presumably so follow their advice.

MOO

What do you mean? If he has a mild or asymptomatic case you think people will herald HXQ as a wonder drug? Because that would be ridiculous; millions of people have had a mild dose of Covid without taking HXQ.

Our community hospital has recently allowed one designated carer per patient. The carer can come in to provide assistance and comfort as needed. Of course there are all kinds of precautions put in place to protect the hospital, but this will be a big help to hospital staff and should even improve outcomes for patients.

The situations in nursing homes is heartbreaking. Our neighbour's wife had early onset dementia and is in a nursing home on First Nations territory. For a few months, he was unable to see her at all when the road in was closed. He didn't know if she would even remember him when he finally could see her again.

But, there have been zero cases of Covid at that nursing home. First Nations elders are revered around here. The community did what they felt they had to do to keep them safe.

Your community has done an excellent job musical. Our Hospital still does not allow visits unless someone is actively dying and with strict protocols. And not dying of Covid. Presently one of our three cases of Covid is hospitalized. We have had two deaths since the start.

No I didn't say that at all. It is a valid comment. They are actually discussing it right now on the radio. The Brazilian president took it and recovered. We know POTUS took it. We don't know if he only took it for 14 days or if he continued to take it. Also have millions of overweight 70 year olds had mild doses though? I am not aware of that. All MOO of course.

Change of topic to the vaccine trials. These volunteers had quite severe side effects.

Coronavirus vaccine trial participants report day-long exhaustion, fever and headaches — but say it's worth it

Madrid’s regional authorities will shortly put the Spanish capital and nine nearby towns under partial lockdown, with immediate effect, a source from Madrid’s regional government told Reuters on Friday.
With 859 cases per 100,000 people, the Madrid region is the worst Covid-19 hotspot in Europe.

Face masks will have to be worn at all times out of doors in the Italian capital Rome and the surrounding Lazio region, local authorities ruled on Friday.
Italy on Thursday registered more than 2,000 new coronavirus cases for the first time since the end of April.

In England, an estimated 116,600 people had Covid-19 in the week from 18 to 24 September, equating to around 1 in 500 people, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said.
Infections are highest in the North West and North East.
“While the evidence suggests that the increase in new cases may be levelling off after a sharp rise in August and September, it is too early to be certain at this stage.”

Honestly, I disagree. Him taking it and recovering is not proof it works. No doubt it will be pitched that way though.

So many people who have been exposed. The White House staff isn't even mentioned.

Excellent point.

Also, they knew Hicks was positive on Wednesday mid day MOO (she was I'll and quarantined on the plane back from Minnesota)...but Trump did not quarantine immediately..not at all on Wednesday and Thursday MOo

CNN are reporting that “a source familiar with his plans” has told them that former vice president and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden is planning to get a coronavirus test this morning, in light of the news of Donald Trump’s positive diagnosis.

Donald Trump tests positive for Covid and goes into quarantine – live updates

Epidemiologists said that if Trump tested positive on Thursday morning he could have been infectious at that time.

Despite the fact that the White House knew about Hicks’s condition, Trump travelled to New Jersey for a fundraising event on Thursday, and his press secretary held a briefing for journalists.

As she had accompanied Trump on trips all week, Hicks should have been tested every day. However, if she was symptomatic from Covid infection on Wednesday, that raises questions about the testing. Normally symptoms do not appear for several days after infection, so it is possible Hicks was given false negative results from tests earlier in the week. The White House uses the Abbott ID Now test, which has been found to produce a significant percentage of false negatives.

Pence attended a meeting at the White House on Monday but did not travel with Trump to Cleveland for the debate. However, he has been in close proximity to Meadows since then. Meadows has, in turn, been in daily close contact with Hicks and the president.

Pence and Meadows have accompanied Barrett to a series of meetings with Republican senators starting on Tuesday. A photograph from Tuesday morning showed Pence, Meadows, Barrett and the White House counsel, Pat Cipollone, meeting the Republican Senate leader, Mitch McConnell. In the photograph, none of them are wearing masks.

Fears for Joe Biden after Trump tests positive for Covid
