That is one reason I did the shout out to @10ofRods ... some here may understand better how to share vs. saying "you aren't a critical thinker" and here is info.

I really would love to know what to share to educate others. Without insulting them as you point out so well, once you say the words "critical thinker" or ????, they shut down and perhaps get pizzed and shut out ALL such info?

@10ofRods, truly what can we do to educate folks vs. pizzing them off. I don't want anyone to sway to my way... but I do do see that folks just don't understand some of the basics such as exponential growth and timeframe.

You know we’re the ones that give facts, where to get masks, post the deaths, rising numbers, etc.
Polite, factual, caring posts.

The non maskers hit back with name calling, swearing, derision - “old frightened lady stay home”, “you’re stupid” and other such nastiness. The women were worse than the men. These were my neighbors.
Just my experience.

I wonder if some men aren't wearing masks because they believe the wrong message. Do they believe that masks are worn to protect the wearer? A strong man, who is not afraid of a wee little killer virus, would not need a mask.

Is there a way to reinforce the correct message so that young men understand they are saving their communities from disaster by wearing a mask? They become manly heros. I know it's so awfully stereotyped, but at this point, I don't really care. There has to be a way to get men to understand the correct message.

I've steadily watched the male basketball players at the park play without masks - they are superclose of course - and it's every night - the others standing around watching? no masks because it's "exercise" - and we have a county mandate that they are to be worn, plus social distancing - I think there will continue to be some that just ignore it - and it really is hopeless IMO. at least until one of them tests positive ?

A pandemic of the novel coronavirus has now killed more than 1.1 million people worldwide.

Over 40.6 million people across the globe have been diagnosed with COVID-19, the disease caused by the new respiratory virus, according to data compiled by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. The criteria for diagnosis -- through clinical means or a lab test -- has varied from country to country. Still, the actual numbers are believed to be much higher due to testing shortages, many unreported cases and suspicions that some national governments are hiding or downplaying the scope of their outbreaks.

Since the first cases were detected in China in December, the virus has rapidly spread to every continent except Antarctica.

The United States is the worst-affected country, with more than 8.2 million diagnosed cases and at least 220,649 deaths.

I agree that has to be our focus, and because of that, we need to proceed in a manner that is most likely to get people to act safely.

I'm one of those "you catch more bees with honey..." people. I believe most people do what they think is right, so in order to protect more people, we need to help them understand that wearing masks and taking other precautions is the right thing to do. I believe we will be more successful if we lead by example and be encouraging.

What I'm seeing, however, is negativity and judgementalism, and I don't think that will convince anyone to wear a mask if they don't want to. I think it will do the opposite and make them rebellious.

So, if our purpose is to truly put a lid on this virus, I think we have to express ourselves to our families, friends, and others in a positive sense, not by calling them names or being divisive.

And, isn't that what all of us want? To stop the virus and stop the death toll from rising? I know that if someone asks me nicely to do a favor, I'm more likely to do it than if they tell me I'm a moron.

I just think we could be going about this in a much more positive and efficient way.

What is this positive and efficient way you speak of?

I truly am curious, because I am not seeing the positive messages getting through to the uncompliant people. The signs, the mandates, the notices on restaurant doors and shops, the CDC advice, the medical experts requests ....

And thousands of people are dying because the virus just keeps spreading due to these ongoing breaches of safety practises.

I once knew a woman who had lost her ability to taste and smell as a result of cancer surgery. She had no interest in food and had to force herself to eat. But she was able to maintain her weight, at least during the years I knew her. She had a husband to cook for, so that helped.

That is good ---I think she probably had to force herself to eat and she did that. It would not be easy though.

I went to a mid-size grocery store this morning to pick up my husband's meds and while I'm in there, I usually go ahead and pick up some groceries. I stocked up a little more than usual today...they had pasta on sale for 99 cents (American Beauty) so I grabbed some. Anyway, I had to listen to a long diatribe from the check out person regarding his large dislike of wearing a mask. I am very non confrontational so I just listened. He was calling for people to "rise up and refuse the mask" ****eyeroll****. It was all I could do to keep my mouth shut.

It would be difficult to say nothing- but wise---- I admire your discipline!!!! I would have kept my mouth shut too though it would be sooooo hard to do!!!

Most tenants struggling to pay their rent will be allowed to stay in their homes until the end of the year, thanks to an announcement by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention last month that made evictions for nonpayment illegal.

You’ll need to attest on a declaration form that you meet a few requirements, such as expecting to earn less than $99,000 a year in 2020. Documentation usually won’t be required.

“If a tenant cannot pay the rent, they should provide the declaration to their property owner as soon as possible,” Benfer said.

Try to give the form to your landlord in person and make sure to keep a copy for yourself.

Unfortunately, some landlords appear to be misinterpreting or ignoring the CDC’s ban and continuing to file evictions anyway.

Jim Baker, executive director of the Private Equity Stakeholder Project, has identified more than 3,500 new eviction cases filed by corporate landlords since the moratorium was announced on Sept. 1.

“These evictions by private equity firms and other corporate landlords threaten the health of their residents and the broader public,” Baker said.

Another problem is that states are interpreting the CDC ban inconsistently. (For example, the CDC doesn’t say anything about renters needing to provide documentation to prove that they qualify for the protection aside from the declaration form but, in Maryland, evidence may be required.)

If you’re facing an eviction, you want to first try to understand what protections are available to you. In addition to the CDC ban, some states have issued their own rules around the proceedings.

South Carolina - first in the worst!

"According to AARP, 5,102 nursing home residents in South Carolina have gotten COVID-19 and 940 of them have died since January. Hutchison told News19 that AARP gets their data from DHEC.

“South Carolina is extremely low on their stock pile of PPE,” said Hutchison. “Every nursing home should have a month’s plus of PPE and we do not.”

AARP’s dashboard says 34% of South Carolina nursing homes don’t even have a week’s supply of PPE."

I was looking at UNICEF's FB post yesterday, about them stockpiling a billion syringes ready for covid vaccine rollout in under-developed nations.

The thread below the post was filled with many hateful and negative comments. Which completely amazed me. So then I looked at the Likes and Loves on the post VS the Angry Faces on the post.

The Likes were at over 66,000 people. The angry faces were under 500 people. I came to the conclusion that the negative vocal ones are in the great minority.

I am going to watch for this more closely in all covid-related situations.
Is the minority hurting things for the majority?

We are hearing on our morning news that Melania is not going on the campaign trail as she is still not over covid. She has a lingering cough. I was wondering where she was, as I thought she had recovered.


The first lady's announcement served as yet another reminder for the President that, as much as he said he wishes the virus would "just disappear", it remains a powerful presence in everyday life.

Our non-mask wearing neighbors stand congregated on the sidewalk, while we have to walk into the street to go around them. At first we still waved and said hi, but they turn their backs on us and do not change their behavior. They're the same ones who put off illegal fireworks in fire season. They aren't from around these parts. They spend an amazing amount of time in their front yard, they seem to be running a car repair business that also takes them into the street.

My point is that some people are comfortable breaking rules, that's how they roll. There aren't many people out walking around our neighborhood and we see them regularly enough that we are unwilling to call them in for ordinance violations (the car repairs can be quite noisy until well after 10 pm, which is when local ordinance says such things must stop - of course, running a repair business in our neighborhood is illegal, but the code enforcement is not happening right now, due to CoVid).

And yet, deaths in the US remain below deaths in other nations, per capita. The US has lots of people (over 300,000,000). When adjusted for size of the population, we're in 12th place.

On deaths, we're #10. Of the larger nations, Peru has 1021 deaths per million of population. The US has 681. Mexico stands to overtake us in the next week or so. And UK, with an uptick in both cases and deaths is another contender for moving higher.

I see that they are independently recruiting, and not going with the USA people who have been recruiting.


Young, healthy people will be deliberately infected with covid-19 in the first ever human challenge trial, set to begin at a London hospital in January. The study, announced today, will recruit up to 50 healthy volunteers between 18 and 30. The UK government has pledged to invest £33.6 million ($44 million) in the trial, which will be carried out in partnership with hVIVO, a company with experience in human viral challenge trials. It will take place at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust, if it gets ethical and regulatory approval. Volunteers will be paid, isolated for the duration of the study, and monitored for up to a year afterwards to check for any side effects.
