I don't think it would have made one bit of difference. And it would be anti-scientific AND it would show him as less than transparent. The people who don't want to wear masks will resist and it will be their own local enforcement that makes a difference.

The current situation, wherein non-masking wearing states get extra federal support in the distribution of PPE - and now the vaccine - is about to end.

Give it time. I see small changes already, and by end of January, I predict we'll be doing better with messaging. Our main problem is that news sources are incredibly scattered, there are no national messaging systems - we've lost that altogether. I just got done surveying 70 students as to their news-watching habits. 69 said they *never* watch any form of news (or read it); of those, 10 said that they "probably should" pay attention to current events. IOW, just one person (older than the rest) consumed news regularly - that person checks some form of news every day.

A few said that something related to current events occasionally shows up on their Instagram (almost no one used FB), but that they do not read or register it. So they hadn't heard about the Monolith(s) nor about how bad COVID is elsewhere or who, locally, is most likely to get it. They had no idea that a new stimulus plan was being debated. Average age = 23.

That is depressing-- so we have a lot of know-nothing kids out there- do they get all their "knowledge" from social media platforms?

All Hands on Deck! Record-breaking day in South Carolina!
South Carolina sets one-day record for COVID-19 cases | wltx.com

COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina has set an all-time one day record for coronavirus cases going back to the beginning of the pandemic.

South Carolina's health agency, DHEC, released the latest data Friday afternoon which showed 2,470 new cases. That breaks the previous high mark of 2,322 set back on July 18.

It was an alarming jump that seems to signal South Carolina has now moved into a new peak of cases that may rival the one seen in the summer. The Friday number is nearly 700 more cases than the previous day.

DHEC acknowledged the seriousness of the numbers in a statement saying they are in an 'all-hands-on-deck' situation.

"It’s clear that our state and nation are at a pivotal point in this pandemic," DHEC wrote.

Your going to be hearing a record is being broken every day for quite awhile. And your deaths in SC aren't projected in one model to peak until December 22 or afterwards perhaps...

Good to hear that the current lot of financial assistance, that hopefully is soon going to be passed, is "only the beginning" according to President Elect Biden.
Unemployment is really high, people are about to get evicted from their homes, he is going to try to do something about that - help them financially for an extended period - so people can safely follow his covid guidelines.

Yes - but not even FB (where people like me post actual news). It's mostly TikTok and Instagram and Youtube (which is to say, no **news** at all). They watch people game. They stream people's gaming. They game a lot. They make "friends" on TikTok and Instagram. Here's a quote:

"I was really surprised at how bad COVID actually is. I didn't realize California had that much of it."

About a third of them are essential workers (top occupation: preschool employee; second place: mental health care home worker; third place: elderly care home worker). Everyone else was in retail or restaurants until COVID and as newer employees, they were either permanently laid off or have lost most of their hours.

Most of the unemployed are still getting unemployment benefits, but had no clue when those might run out. One household now has 17 people living in it (all adult children and their families have moved in due to COVID, there were 9 people living there before COVID). 4 BR 2 BA house. 4 generations represented.

Just got off the phone with a coworker (who has COVID; got it from a household member who is an essential worker). She's through the worst part, but of course it's no joke.

This happened yesterday in Sydney.. another of our hotel workers - a cleaner - caught covid at a quarantine hotel. US strain of covid.

NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard says genomic sequencing has confirmed the COVID-19 strain found in a Sydney hotel worker originated from the United States, likely from a self-isolating airline crew.

"We had an air crew who were self-isolating in the Novotel, somehow the person doing the domestic work there got the virus from a member of that particular crew," Mr Hazzard said.

He said he was now more concerned around not just international travellers but crew managing massive amounts of freight entering the country.

Dr. Fauci said that the result of Thanksgiving would be a Surge on top of a Surge.

I expect that Christmas/New Years will result in a Surge on top of a Surge on top of Surge.

Accordingly, possibly no peak in Cases until early January and no peak in Deaths until mid-January. Although the measures by "Some" states will hopefully minimize the overall damage, so we might be able to plateau sooner.

Oregon reports 2,176 new confirmed and presumptive COVID-19 cases, 30 new deaths

PORTLAND, Ore.
— COVID-19 has claimed 30 more lives in Oregon, raising the state’s death toll to 1,003, the Oregon Health Authority reported at 12:01 a.m. today.

“Today, Oregon marked a tragic milestone in the COIVID-19 pandemic,” said Gov. Kate Brown. “The Oregon Health Authority reported 30 deaths today, a record, and the number pushed us past the 1,000th death since the start of this crisis. This disease has touched every Oregonian. It has taken a devastating toll on our families, our communities, our businesses and our physical and mental wellbeing.

On this somber day, our hearts go out to all the families and friends who have lost a loved one and to all Oregonians who have suffered and sacrificed during this pandemic.”

Oregon reports 2,176 new confirmed and presumptive COVID-19 cases, 30 new deaths

Where I live in Jackson county there are 172 new cases and 3 deaths. Our total cases are 4202 and total deaths are 41. Until yesterday I hadn’t heard of anyone who had gotten Covid, but I found out that the granddaughter of a friend is recovering. She is a nurse and got it at work. Her husband and two little girls didn’t get it. She quarantined for two weeks while he held down the fort. I don’t know her personally, so my circle of friends has remained untouched so far.

Jackson County Public Health Reports 172 New COVID-19 Cases - DEC 4

This interactive map gives the total cases in each zip code. @margarita25 I know you love these maps!
Shown here are Jackson county communities, but the map can be moved to any part of Oregon.

@dixiegirl1035 you commented earlier on the high percentage in Lake county, one of more sparsely populated counties. If you slide the map to the east, the last zip code shown is Lakeview, which is the main population center for Lake county. You can see the ratio of cases to population of you tap on it...cases per/100K (the population is only a little over 5000) are over 2000. Sadly, Klamath and Lake counties used to be way behind Jackson county, and although they aren’t catching up, the increase has been dramatic for such rural counties.

Upon a cursory scan of today’s outbreak data, both state and national, it gives me great sadness to see all the nursing home and assisted living facilities affected. As we know these have been prime targets since the beginning, but I was hoping we would somehow be able to get these under control. These poor elderly folks, they have gone nowhere, done nothing, and they’re still getting hammered. Our elderly population has been slaughtered by this virus. I am in tears over it. Seems they are losing this battle. With increased and exponential community transmission, the chances of the workers who care for them are also more at risk, and likely to being the virus in. I’m also assuming there are also staffing issues, etc. in some places, so some elderly may not be getting the standard of care needed.

So many of our elderly are only victims of their circumstances, which is being in a home. We have the option to remain in our homes and be safe, but these people do not - they are being infected in their own residences, so powerlessly. It’s devastating and heartbreaking to see. How I wish they could be better protected.

I am really sad about this.

The truth is that a lot of people simply Don't Care about these elderly in Nursing Homes. Notice that I did not say "All," since I know that Many people genuinely care, and Many experience extreme trauma by having to deal with these deaths on a daily basis.

But if we were talking about Celebrities, Sports Heroes, Etc., and I won't belabor the point by naming names.....then I expect it might be different.

But even beyond the fact that these nameless and faceless "HUMAN BEINGS" are dying in nursing homes.....or hospitals.......or alone at home........the fact remains that they are Dying. And IT DID NOT HAVE TO BE THIS WAY!!

People got mad here when they kept extending it month after month. Made them think it would magically go away in 30 days or a miracle would happen. Tell the public a realistic time frame so people can know what’s ahead and deal with it.

He can certainly ask, but without consequences or people to enforce it - will those that didn’t vote for him bother to listen and actually do it?
JMO

No, they won't. I have to admit to being disappointed when I read this. It's just meaningless. Those of us who know better already wear masks and have for forever.

It's the people who won't wear masks who are causing most of the spread and if we've learned anything this year I'd say that it's politely asking Americans to do something they don't want to do isn't going to get it done.

All my lunatic FB friends or irl friends who believe it's an oppression, as useful as a chain link fence in blocking a virus and is just antiChristian to cover their face are sure as heck not going to cover their face when asked to by a man they also happened to think "stole" the election. We are in for a world of hurt if we are still going to just trust other people to do the right thing.

Those whose Lack of Responsiveness and Responsibility, caused all of these Unnecessary Deaths, should be locked in a Prison Cell, for the length of time it takes for the Names of Every Single American Covid-19 Death, to be read through loudspeakers, 24/7.
