Massachusetts now has 5 cases of the UK COVID variant, CDC confirms
In Massachusetts there are now five cases of the
COVID variant that first emerged in the United Kingdom and has spread to different parts of the world, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The Department of Public Health told the
Boston Globe that one case of the new strain was found in a male in his 20s from Hampshire County; a male in his teens from Worcester County; a female in her 20s from Suffolk County; a female in her 50s from Worcester County; and a male in his 20s from Worcester County. Three of the five cases involved travel, health officials said.

the CDC does break out for each state the variants and their # of cases found. hope that the numbers do not get so great that they stop counting. I remember when cases and deaths were in single or double digits and then all [expletive deleted] broke loose and the numbers went too high for contact tracing in most places... :(

??? TLDR ???

TLDR (or TL;DR) is a common internet acronym for “Too Long; Didn't Read.” At face value, the phrase seems pretty easy to understand.Aug 2, 2019

trust me, people want the vaccine- there is limited availability and some convoluted distribution systems

These 'vaccine hunters' are getting their shots ahead of schedule by gaming the system - CNN

there are other articles out today about a personal trainer who labeled herself "an educator" in order to get vaccinated. people are thinking about lying, stealing and cheating to get vaccinated. if you really believe that a vaccine is the difference between life and death, a transgression might seem like a bargain.

I was thinking about these people ...

Anti-vaccination protests temporarily shut down Dodger Stadium mega vaccination site

As well as the family and friends of a (pro-vac) person I know in NY state, who say "no vaccine for me, no way, no how". Because they are covid deniers.
Some of these people are about to go on a road trip to FL because .. you know .. it is more open there.

CNN’s Jake Tapper, Dr. Sanjay Gupta Blast Andrew Cuomo for Saying He Doesn’t Trust Covid ‘Experts’: ‘Wildly Irresponsible’

CNN anchor Jake Tapper and chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta sharply criticized comments by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) that suggested he mistrusted Covid experts, calling his words “wildly irresponsible.”

(snip)
“When I say experts, in air quotes, it sounds like I’m saying I don’t really trust the experts,” said Cuomo. “Because I don’t. Because I don’t.”

So, they do not want to get the vaccine and they would try to prevent others from getting it?
Does that make sense to anyone?

Well, we are hearing good things about the Novavax vaccine.
(Australia has 51 million doses on order, enough to do our entire population)

Firstly, Novavax's two-dose shot has shown efficacy against the new strains of the Coronavirus found in the U.K. and South Africa, making it the first company to prove this in clinical trials.

Novavax shot actually has 95.6% effectiveness against the original virus — right in line with its two competitors.

The shot should also be easier to distribute, considering that it doesn’t need to be stored in super-cold temperatures

Novavax’s vaccine is also likely to be more reasonably priced

Crucially, the company has also lined up a lot of production capacity, collaborating with the world’s largest vaccine producer Serum Institute of India with plans to produce its vaccine at a rate of 2 billion doses a year starting from mid-2021.

Novavax’s Highly Effective Vaccine Could Be A Game Changer

More on Novavax ....

Novavax Inc has submitted its COVID-19 vaccine candidate to the Canadian health regulator for emergency-use authorization after the pharmaceutical company said last week its vaccine was 89% effective in a UK trial.

The vaccine candidate will be reviewed in real-time once the Canadian government accepts the application, which was submitted by the company on Friday, according to a notice on Health Canada's website. Drug and vaccine authorizations for COVID-19: List of applications received - Canada.ca

A leading infectious disease expert predicted on Sunday that the deadlier British variant of Covid-19 will become the dominant strain of the virus in the US and could hit the country like a hurricane.

Epidemiologist Michael Osterholm ...... warned America to brace for the spread of the virulent strain this spring.

“The surge that is likely to occur with this new variant from England is going to happen in the next six to 14 weeks, Osterholm told NBC’s Meet the Press show on Sunday morning.

‘That hurricane is coming’: expert warns US to brace for virulent Covid strain

I'm starting to think nothing can stop it. Even with enhanced travel precautions, we're all just sitting ducks, it seems.

I really don't get how it's spreading like this. I haven't seen anyone without a mask in months, people are being careful to social distance. I have to wonder if it's a good idea to have schools open and to have sports events, though.

Home haircut here too. And Amazon shears. And the ponytail method. I even trust my husband to do it for me. Desperate times call for desperate measures! :D Besides, I never go anywhere anyway.

Ok, so i have now heard about the ponytail method 3-4 times...
I guess I can see the basic picture... but can someone provide some details to better understand precision?

Well, at least this person did not make any foolish choices. The state they live in has had no covid at all for 10 months, and very little prior to that. They have the strictest Premier in all of Australia, who has shielded them very well.

This is just an unfortunate turn of events where the person had no idea they were infected and was living normal life. No blame to go anywhere in this situation. He wasn't to know that the hotel's ventilation was not adequate enough for the UK variant. No-one knew that. Now they know.

Aussie, this just sounds so ominous.......

oh no!
well he died a hero
and I'm glad he made it to 100

He did indeed.

He raised £30million, met the Queen, got a knighthood, had a number 1 hit single, received 150,000 birthday cards and an RAF flypast in his honour, and had the respect of his countrymen. As his daughter has said, his last year really was remarkable. What a character!

https://nypost.com/2021/02/01/more-americans-have-now-been-vaccinated-for-covid-than-infected/

More Americans have been vaccinated for COVID-19, as of Monday, than have been infected with the illness as the nationwide inoculation rollout continues, according to a report.

According to a Bloomberg Vaccine Tracker, 26.5 million people in the US have now received at least one dose of the vaccine, surpassing the 26.2 million coronavirus cases since the onset of the pandemic.

“It’s worth noting that today, for the first time, the data said that more people were vaccinated than were reported as newly diagnosed cases,” Paula Cannon, a professor at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine, told the outlet.

“That’s worth celebrating. I’m all for that win,” she said.
