I guess the point is that it is sad that people have to be incentivised to have a pandemic-stopping vaccine. That common sense cannot prevail. That helping to stop a pandemic is not enough incentive already.

I get why this has to be done. But it just makes some of us shake our heads.

I get that, too. Unfortunately, some people have been subjected to a lot of conspiracy and fearmongering.

I wonder how they are going to incentivise them to have their 2nd shot. Can they only enter the lottery after they prove they have had both shots?
And when a booster shot is due, what will they do then?
11 million letters go out "Congratulations! You won the lottery! You're not going to die of Covid-19!"

Please don't find offense with a heartfelt YEARNING for people to get the dang shot.

p.s. I am offended that post after post after post I have been here adovoating for science and cooperation to end the spread, and then people jump on my support for any effort to convince people to get the vaccination like I'm a callous idiot.

Welcome to my world. :)

Each country has got to put their own citizens first. IMO, that's just common sense.

Delta Air Lines is requiring vaccines for new employees - CNN
More at link

In December, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) announced companies can legally mandate employees and new hires be vaccinated. But there are two exemptions companies must allow for, according to the EEOC: a disability or religious reasons.

Which religions actually forbid vaccination? I know a few Christian Scientists who don't get vaccines or go to the doctor when they are sick. Other than that, which religions are anti vaccination? Anyone know?

"a chance to win a million dollars if you have a vaccine" "a chance to win tickets to a game if you have a vaccine"

Meanwhile there are people around the world who are begging for vaccines. Like India.

America first.

Along those same lines, the WHO is asking nations who've already vaccinated the adults who wanted shots to hold off on vaccinating kids until the rest of the world can be put on a safer footing.

Covid: Delay child vaccinations and share jabs with Covax, says WHO

Since kids are so much less likely to have severe symptoms, I think I agree with this. It could save the lives of vulnerable adults.

That's interesting. I don't really know. We have Amish and Old Order Mennonite around here and they've been getting the shots.

It’s odd seeing Dr. Fauci without a mask after being vaccinated and wearing multiple masks. I think Rand Paul was on to something by saying it was ‘theater’. The CDC is right in that you don’t need to wear a mask if you’ve been vaccinated. Something that has just been common sense from the beginning. IMO. Now, I hope we get to the origin of Covid 19. MOO

Respectfully snipped for focus...

That investigation is really beginning to heat up. I think we'll see some surprises.

A certain religion was kicking up a fuss about some of the vaccines originating from aborted tissued from, I believe, the 70s.

After a period of time, they advised their members to take the other vaccines and finally, stopped making a big deal about it.

I know of no religion that would deny people something that may keep you alive or prevent illness other than the Christian Scientists as you stated.

We had a devout CS in our family and I can tell you that as the person aged and 'stuff' happened, they were off to the doctor quicker than you can blink.

First it was cataracts, those were fixed. Then a serious illness or two but the surgeon was called.

Amazing how ones' perspective can change. Just saying it was our experience with one person.

Luckily, they were not sick until towards the end of their life.

I'm not so sure that it has been "common sense" from the beginning. Because it's possible to get breakthrough cases among people who have been vaccinated, it was, and perhaps still is possible that covid is transmittable in some people who were vaccinated. None of the existing vaccines are 100% effective at preventing infections.

The key will be to have enough people vaccinated so that those few who might still be infectious, will be unlikely to find hosts.

My understanding of the COVID vaccines is that they prevent the vaccinated person from getting extremely ill/dying from COVID.

They are unlike other vaccinations in that once fully vaccinated, a person can still transmit and catch COVID.

The shots only prevent the degree of illness, thus relieving the hospitals/staff of constantly full ICUS and death.

If we could all get a relatively minor version of COVID, similar to a flu, we would all be safer and mostly recover fully.

IMO, if any country rushes into 'regular' ie pre-COVID activities too quickly, it could rebound with more lockdowns and public health measures needed over and over again.

We may have to accept that COVID is here for a long time, we may need booster shots and it could be declared to be endemic to certain areas.

MOO, IMO

There is another way to look at it ... each country vaccinates their people who want to be vaccinated, who want to be protected. Freely and willingly without monetary coercion - and then help poor countries who can't afford the vaccines to vaccinate their willing people.

Rather than use money for coercion, use that money for vaccines for poor countries (more money for COVAX perhaps).

That way we leave those persons who don't want the vaccine to their right to not have the vaccine. And their personal consequences of that. And we provide more help to the poor nations who are desperate and not doing well.

Free and equitable vaccination during a pandemic.

Ohio, though, was given $$ to do as they choose for that state's efforts. Likening them to an entire country isn't correct IMO in the context of this particular "coercion" discussion. They actually are using the money as a game of chance reward lottery anyway. "Coercion" implies threats. JMO.

I was actually speaking also of the "free tickets to a game, for a vaccine" in another state. And the people who said they will get a vaccine if they are given $100.

Yes, bribery is probably a better word to use.

Australian cricketers are particularly close to Indian cricket players, due to the fact that they play so many matches against each other in each of our countries. Aussie cricketers have recently left India, during the crisis, and flown to an island as they can't fly here until they are all clear.

So the Aussie cricketers have put together a short 53 sec video to try to raise money for more help for India.

"India is recording 4 new covid cases every second.
There's not enough oxygen to go round.
These are the most deadly days of the pandemic so far.
The situation is heartbreaking.
In times of crisis, we come together.
We're throwing our support behind UNICEF's India Crisis Appeal.
Their teams are on the ground right now.
No-one can do everything ... but everyone can do something .... (more)"

Aussie cricketers unite to raise money for India through UNICEF

I've only got 1 shot so far, next one next week. But I believe I'm still going to wear my mask as the lady downstairs found out she has COVID. And she doesn't wear a mask in the hallways... not going to chance it!
