I had my long covid clinic appointment today. It was remote, but v thorough. A clinical assessment, then a physio, then a psych. I've been referred for further blood tests, and ECG, echo, sleep clinic and was offered CBT counselling. They basically said from how I presented I do indeed have long covid, post viral fatigue version. I told them I'm sure the jabs helped which they did not seem surprised about.

So pending test results aside, they said as much is still unknown the course they are taking is to advise in line with ME sufferers. Rest as much as possible, dont let your energy levels run down, drop what you can from your daily routine (not easy for me).

Interestingly, issues I reported with my eyes (dry, itchy) and ears (ringing etc) they have disregarded because they are not recognised as long covid symptoms - yet, if you ask me. Also, although I do need to lose weight they said I musnt reduce calorie intake right now. Just eat healthy and watch portions. Apparently "now is not the time".

Hope this may be of interest, I'll let you know how the tests go.
This is great news I hope..

Lab discovers root cause of confusion, fatigue experienced by COVID 'long haulers'
...
A California virologist appears to have discovered the root cause, which is leading to better treatment and an end to suffering.
...
"They're not in anyone's head. They're real," said Dr. Bruce Patterson, the CEO and founder of IncellDx in San Carlos. "They're due to real immunological abnormalities, and now we have ways of treating them."

Dr. Patterson used machine learning to zero in on a specific kind of white blood cell called monocytes.
"These cells were acting like a garbage can, and they were going around and scavenging dying cells that contained the COVID proteins and was reprocessing them so the immune system can see them," he explained.

The cells then trigger an inflammatory response that leads to chronic fatigue and brain fog, among many other symptoms.
...
Dr. Patterson's work on the root cause of long haulers is helping long suffering patients to be treated. Labs in Los Angeles and Chicago specialize in the analysis.
...

Patterson projects that one in three COVID cases may develop into long haulers. So far, treatment can lead to improvement in two to four weeks. His research findings have been published in the journal "Frontiers in Immunology." He also provides information to patients and doctors here.

While it is discouraging to hear about some fully vaccinated people testing
positive, it appears these people either have no symptoms or mild symptoms
that dont require hospitalization which means the vaccine is doing is job.
It’s scary that a fully vaccinated person can be asymptomatic, not know you’ve been exposed, and spread it to others.

There is the issue of viral load of a person who has been vaccinated--the viral
load may be much lower than an unvaccinated person to the point that if
the virus is in fact transmissible in vaccinated people, the viral.load they
transmit would be so low as to not cause ilness in other people. There
is still much that is unknown about transmisibility in vaccinated people

Ugh, really bad news. Most of us are not wearing masks so new cases will skyrocket.

Delta Variant Accounts for 83% of Known U.S. Covid-19 Cases
The Delta variant accounts for 83% of analyzed Covid-19 cases in the U.S, according to genetic sequences from positive tests submitted to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the agency’s director said.

J&J have been trialing two doses of their vaccine since early February. I wonder how their trial is going.
(I posted this info on the vaccine thread earlier, as there was a question about it)

Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine: UK sets new study for 2-dose shot

Also:
European research teams have also published results suggesting that it’s effective to mix one dose of Pfizer-BioNTech’s vaccine with one dose of the shot made by AstraZeneca-Oxford University—which, like Johnson & Johnson’s vaccine, is adenovirus-based. That’s not a direct parallel, but it does support the general concept of mixing and matching doses.
I Got a J&J Vaccine. Should I Get a Pfizer or Moderna Booster?

33 residents, staff of Cape Cod nursing home test positive for COVID
more at link
A Massachusetts nursing home has reported 33 residents and staff that work at the facility have tested positive for COVID-19 over the past 10 days, the Department of Public Health said.

The Maplewood at Mayflower Place in West Yarmouth reported its first positive COVID test on July 10, with the case count increasing to 33 as of July 19.

The DPH said a total of 24 residents and 9 staff tested positive for the coronavirus.

"DPH has been actively monitoring and assisting in the response to the facility," a statement from the health agency said.

The state health agency said it has been onsite and is proving ongoing daily support, which includes testing and PPE supplies.

The DPH said residents who tested positive have been offered monoclonal antibody therapeutics.

"The majority of residents are vaccinated and asymptomatic or have mild symptoms. All positive staff are stable," the statement from the DPH said.

This is going to be an excellent real-time test case. A mixture of old and young people. Some vaccinated, others not. Hopefully we'll learn that those residents who were vaccinated handle the virus well.

Massachusetts is one of the highest vaccinated states, so this isn't good. Although if it provides more proof of the miraculous abilities of the vaccines, then maybe those of us who are vaccinated, have reason to be somewhat optimistic. At least for now, with the Delta variant.

I'm personally still wearing my mask indoors and in crowded outdoor spaces (farmer's market is the main place). People probably think I'm not vaccinated because I still wear my mask but whatever. I'd rather just keep wearing the mask for now. I think we saw decent numbers and immediately dropped all guards. So I'm just erring on the side of caution. I had covid and it was awful - definitely don't want to go through anything like it again.

Welcome! :)

And nobody worry about what anyone else thinks about still wearing a mask, like you said! :) Many people still want to wear their masks and that’s GREAT!!! They’re smart!!! And considerate and conscious!!!!!

And glad you recovered!

More from Mass (almost put it in the state thread but kind of fit here so :p)
Spike in Mass. COVID Cases Among Worst in US, But Death Rate Remains Low

Data from the New York Times shows Massachusetts has had the third-highest increase in new coronavirus cases over the last 14 days, but the second-most vaccinated state fared much better by other metrics like hospitalizations and deaths
Published 4 hours agoCoronavirus cases are on the rise again, and in recent weeks, Massachusetts has seen one of the sharpest spikes in the nation.

The New York Times maintains a chart comparing trends in each state. Ranking by the increase in new cases over the last 14 days, as of Tuesday, Massachusetts was third, behind only Tennessee and Alabama.

New cases in the Bay State rose by 472% over that time period, the chart showed, with an average of 268 new COVID-19 cases per day.

Fauci, Rand Paul trade 'lying' accusations about gain-of-function research in hearing on delta variant

Fauci really lost it today at the Senate hearings, seems he was really rattled by Senator Rand Paul questioning Fauci's division of the NIH and its funding of gain of function research through an intermediary orgnanization and ultimately the Wuhan lab. Good for Senator Rand Paul for holding his feet to the fire. American taxpayers need to know if their tax money was used to fund gain of function research in the Wuhan lab.

In the Washington Post article linked by Ilovewings (below) it clearly says that the participation of the US (NIH) in funding any research at Wuhan lab has been judged by qualified staff up and down the chain as not being gain of function research.

If Rand Paul has some proof that makes him think otherwise, I think he needs to show it. Innuendo and speculation is harmful. IMO

And if there is proof that it was gain of function research (which was allowed to restart while the previous president was in office) that the US was funding in Wuhan lab, then the US calling for an investigation into a potential 'lab leak' befuddles me. Does the US really want to bear partial responsibility for that?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/07/20/fauci-paul-wuhan-lab/

YAY!!! Dr Fauci finally tells Rand Paul " you don't know what you are talking about"
I watched the exchange: He also told Rand Paul he was a liar-- I loved it. Dr. Fauci has been Rand Paul's whipping boy for far too long!!!
