I have a question: with all of these cases of Delta infection, does that not contribute to herd immunity?
Yes, it contributes to herd immunity.

I was REALLY enjoying the normal, mask-free life, and was looking forward to seeing and being seen by students this fall. This past spring, it felt amazing to be in meetings with co-workers and see facial expressions, and to eat dinner in a restaurant. Now that's gone. I hope the restaurants manage to thrive, though.:(

I know: I really enjoyed life without a mask though I didn't really do anything social. It was just nice to be free of it and see people's faces and expressions!!! We just need to do what we have to do to free ourselves from this scourge

Yup. My entire family is fully vaccinated, except of course my 6 yr old grand baby.

On Sunday my daughter had just our immediate family over, for an outdoor BBQ and to meet her brand new puppy.

Today my daughter called, very worried, and said her fully vaccinated best friend had stopped by briefly Sunday morning to see the puppy. She is a vet tech and was going to look him over.

She was sitting in the same area as we all were much later that day. She called my daughter today to say that her co-worker had tested positive today for Covid. She had worked with that same co-worker all last week.

So my daughter and her bf are going to get tested on Wednesday. They had visited with her for about 20 minutes in the back yard, no masks. And they all took turns holding the puppy/ So I hope he doesn't get sick too. Didnt they say dogs could be infected?

We are all in quarantine at this time. :(
Hey @katydid23 , Keep us posted on your family's COVID status, OK? If I don't see you around our mutual forums, I will get worried for sure. Best wishes!:)

This is day 5 after my daughter’s exposure. She tested negative yesterday and said the doctor told her most vaxxed patients test positive on day 4-5 if they have it. If she’s negative, that means my household will be ok. We plan to stay home now except for where we have to go (work, doctors). I see no masks on anyone, anywhere. Further, the petition to remove masking in schools in Sept is ongoing. Does no one read or watch the news around here?!

Yes, it contributes to herd immunity.
It's a slow process but surely we will all get there.

According to the bbc, we have 70% of our adult population now fully vaccinated but we're not anywhere near to herd immunity.

Not to worry, the ADF are soon going to be helping the police to remind these people that they need to stay home. While they are allowed to leave home to get vaccinated, they will be reminded to stay in their own area. Things will change a bit now.

They are probably just trying to avoid waiting at their own vaccination hubs, since walk-in appointments are now also allowed. While dangerously risking spreading the virus to regional NSW.
It really isn't fair, seeing that they are getting the great majority of vaccines sent to their own zones. They shouldn't be trying to take yours.
Stay safe, Tootsie. Keep your mask on, hey.

Sneaky tactics used to access Covid-19 vaccines in Bathurst
Just picking up on your comment to Tootsie there about keeping her mask on.

It is frustrating that us wearing a mask keeps others safe, rather than ourselves, when not everyone sticks to it. So for me, not so much keep your mask on (which I do anyway still) but avoid places where others dont!

I think the percentage of vaccinated is still much too low, to reach herd immunity.

Right now we are quarantined, and awaiting test results from the friend who visited my daughter that morning.

My daughters boyfriend is going to get tested today, but it might still be too early for it to show up. [this is 4 days after exposure]

My husband and I are still feeling fine, no symptoms. :)

Funny the CDC won’t reveal data behind the sudden mask mandate for vaccinated folks. What are they not telling us? People are demanding to see data. Where is it?

He tested NEGATIVE....so far so good...but I will feel a lot better if he takes another one in a few days...just to make sure.

He gets tested 2 or 3 x a week for his job. So he is like my birdie in the coal mine--as long as he is good, I feel OK.

He and my daughter both interacted with their friend that morning ---passing the puppy back and forth between them. And so far their friend is still testing negative as well. Even though her co-worker has tested positive and has gotten pretty ill.

I never stopped wearing a mask. My work required it no matter that I’m outside a lot of the time.
I’m just glad to have my job back, wearing a mask is a minor inconvenience to me.
I have several beautiful masks and have added matching beaded or lucite type mask chains.
Although I was tempted to buy a tube or two of lipstick since today is National Lipstick Day and Nars is on sale.

"“With this Delta variant being so incredibly contagious, that changes the calculation in terms of when we can expect to see that herd immunity — that elusive herd immunity. We don’t know what percentage of the population needs to be immune to get there, but it’s going to be very high,” Doron said. “Eventually though, whether it’s through vaccination or infection, we will get there.”"

Am I the only one who is finding this near impossible to believe? At first we were told we'd get lasting immunity if we caught covid. And that we'd not be able to get covid for the most part if we got vaccinated. Everything so far is worse than expected.

There is no way at this rate we can hit a high enough percentage of population having herd immunity when half the population won't get vaccinated. The vaccines are drastically reduced in effectiveness after just months. Certainly not a year. And the vaccinated are still catching it and spreading it within a relatively short period after vaccination. And then those who catch covid naturally often don't have lasting immunity. Covid groups are full of people who have had covid twice with in the last year. Then throw in the fact that this virus is apparently constantly mutating and so far we aren't getting milder versions that out compete the more virulent ones so far.

I think this is just gross optimism to try and keep pushing people to get vaccinated just so they can see what happens and hope for the best. None of them really knows what the heck they are talking about. It's all suppositions and they've been wrong most of the time so far always opting for the most optimistic outcome that never comes.

People who are vaccinated don't really have immunity like with measles, mumps etc. We just have reduced severity of disease. If being vaccinated means we can get sick and spread it but just be less likely for severe illness or death how does that truly contribute to herd immunity? If we need X percentage immune and not spreading then we aren't meeting those goals by counting all the vaccinated like they are immune. At this point we know an increasing percentage are not. They are spreading it just the same.

It's a global issue. Since human herds tend not to stay fenced up, and since covid is a wiley virus, herd immunity is not likely happening any time soon, if ever.

Herd immunity and COVID-19 (coronavirus): What you need to know.

I tend to agree with you.

The Gratton Institute (independent research facility, based on good public policy) seems to think that if/when we have an 80% full-vaccination rate that we can loosen up.

Not so much because we will be virus free, but because then we will be able to fully manage the sickness in the best way possible.

Until we reach that high rate, they suggest that we need to continue our regime of squelching the virus whenever it pops up.

Australia can’t dump zero Covid strategy until 80% of people vaccinated, Grattan Institute warns

I know it must be so much more frustrating for folks with kids and folks who work..... but I just cannot get too angry with the CDC.... its not like we have been here before. And with political aspects filled with hate, ridicule and misinformation... I feel they are trapped in some ways. I have felt they have wanted to maintain stricter guidelines...but when states pass anti-mask laws, what are they going to do.

I just feel the unvaccinated have given us zero choice right now. We just have to wear the masks to be safe.
But as I said in the beginning, having to worry about children and working in brick and mortar settings just takes even more choices away.....and must be frustrating.
