Surge in COVID jabs for young people in NSW and Victoria as vaccines become more available

Young Australians in locked-down cities are rolling up their sleeves in massive numbers to protect themselves with the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Growing vaccination rates of people aged between 16 and 39 in New South Wales and Victoria suggest young people are keen to gain the protection of a vaccine, when it is made available and convenient to access.

Nationally, these age groups have had the least access to vaccines, with the rollout campaign prioritising older Australians more vulnerable to serious disease.

Just 7.5 per cent of 16-19-year-olds have had even a first dose, rising to 26.6 per cent of 35-39-year-olds.

The war against the coronavirus is now a 'war against ourselves:' Doctor

We don't have the ability to function as a country," said Dr. Eric Topol,
we are facing a "formidable version of the virus, and we have no unity in the battle against it," he added.

Dr. Anthony Fauci said as much on MSNBC Tuesday, noting that while the federal government won't implement mandates, "under certain circumstances, mandates should be done" in the U.S.

New York and Washington are among states mandating government employees be fully vaccinated, while Florida's governor has threatened to withhold funding to schools and salaries of school officials that try to implement mask mandates.

On the flip side, the private sector has taken on the burden to implement mandates — whether it be mask mandates in buildings or vaccinations for employees.

Netflix (NFLX) and Citigroup (C) are among the latest to join the ranks, while Norwegian Cruise Lines (NCLH) is embroiled in a legal battle with Florida as it seeks to mandate passengers be fully vaccinated — which goes against Florida's vaccine passport ban.

"I think it's sad that it's come to that, we shouldn't need to do that," said Dr. Paul Offit, professor of pediatrics at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and a top vaccine expert.

Think the pandemic isn't a big deal? That the government is using it to gain power and control? CDC Director Rochelle Walensky has a message for you, she tells us in The EIC Interview.

I live in New York City, where we heard sirens every day for weeks and 30,000 people died from COVID-19 in a couple of months. The pandemic was in our face.

But I have a younger cousin in Texas. For her things look and feel different. She's not seeing a lot of people die. She didn't hear all those sirens. To her, it can feel like this thing isn't as serious as the media makes out.

Because of that, it can feel like the government is trying to scare people into taking something they don't really know all that much about. It seems like it's the government grabbing power and control of their lives.

What do you say to people like her?

There is nothing that you can say. Because she won't hear it. Her reality and experience has been far different during Covid. She is not unlike many of my younger friends, who have children. Most of them got Covid last winter. A few sniffles, coughs, headache. They say that this is all "drama".

I hope that they are right. I wish I could have as cavalier of an attitude.

Party On! With Covid!
Okay. So this last week, we had Barack Obamas 500 persons in a tent party. Undoubtedly all attendees vaccinated. Pretty sure the United States security protecting him, made sure of that.
We had the outdoor Lollapalooza festival in Chicago. Dates, July 29 through August 2. Young people, probably low vaccination rates.
Then we have the Sturges motorcycle gathering which started August 6th and is currently ongoing. These guys are freedom lovers, I suspect not getting vaccinated is a badge of honor for many of them.
SO, LETS see what happens!
This is like a petri dish from all walks of American lives.
Sciently fascinating.
I personally hope very few get sick from Covid.

Fully vaccinated people in England will no longer be legally required to self-isolate upon contact with a positive Covid case from Monday, and will instead be advised to take a PCR test

And those who do come into contact with the infected will not be told to isolate while waiting for their results.

..... the government was able to go ahead with the decision to exempt the fully vaccinated from isolation rules on Monday 16 August, as planned, because “getting two doses of a vaccine has tipped the odds in our favour and allowed us to safely reclaim our lost freedoms”.

No need for fully-jabbed Covid contacts to isolate from Monday, confirms Javid

Two US companies, Pfizer and Moderna, have raised the prices of their Covid-19 vaccines after data from clinical trials showed their mRNA formula was more effective than cheaper vaccines from Britain’s AstraZeneca and the American drugs maker Johnson & Johnson.

AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson have pledged to provide their doses on a not-for-profit basis until the pandemic ends.

Canada is working to create a digital vaccine passport that would allow citizens to travel abroad and it should be available in the next few months, government officials said on Wednesday.

Canada has one of the best inoculation records in the world. As of 31 July, 81% people aged 12 and over had received one shot and 68% had been given two. (Wow, good job Canada!)

Good for AZ and J&J for selling their vaccines at production cost to foreign nations. It will make a huge impact in poorer countries.

Pfizer $19 - $30
Moderna $22 - $37
Astra $2 - $5

Well done, Cats, how come you’ve had it so late?

Drink plenty of water and get a good long sleep tonight :)

I forgot they told me to drink alot, thanks.

I waited because I believe if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I am feeling good, health is great, why upset the apple cart by adding something into my system? What if it screws me up? Makes me ill ? Etc...

So the fear of adding this new drug into my system was greater than my fear of Covid.

Now things have changed. The Delta variant is out of control, my area is a very high transmission area, and now:

I'm more afraid of Covid then I am of adding this new drug into my system.

Also, I am very haunted reading about unvaccinated people in the hospital wishing they had gotten it. Some of them die. They beg people to get it.

So I am listening. I can't wait for my 2nd shot September 2nd.

Dr. Kevin Tracey: Covid vaccines won't provide herd immunity. We need to look for additional treatments. (nbcnews.com)

We must invest in the research necessary to identify, discover and test new therapies for those who get sick even as we push to get more shots in arms.

Is it a quick-pick lotto ticket — 70, 80, 85, 90 — or just the ever-changing goal posts on the population percentage necessary to reach herd immunity against Covid-19? From the pandemic's beginning to today, there has been a seemingly endless discussion by epidemiologists, virologists and pundits predicting various vaccination thresholds to eradicate or at least contain the virus.

The best estimates for herd immunity — the proportion of a population that needs to be immune from the virus so that the number of new infections decreases — establish a goal in the 60-70 percent range for the world community, with the possibility of needing at least 80 percent for the U.S. population. But as long as there are communities that still have very low vaccination rates (under 40-50 percent), Covid outbreaks will continue. So is herd immunity a realistic goal? And if not, then what?...

I just saw our local city/massachusetts numbers for the young folk aged 12-25ish (they had it broken down further) was about 33-39 %. I’m guessing that’s probably close to states numbers. So.
