Nice! I'm glad to have found the Coronavirus thread! I'll be sure to follow for updates. Warning though: I'm a glass half full kind of person in this situation. I like to assume the worst in these situations and then be glad when inevitably nothing pans out. I read someone's description of being horrifically ill and totally picture myself going through the same. I have some of my own scary extenuating health problems and rare diagnosis though that are probably why I just assume I'll get sick and die and need to make sure my children are prepared for and taken care of. (I also over share)

I should've been more clear. I think all the numbers from Hubei are suspect - including, and perhaps especially, the number of deaths. I think they are higher than what's been reported, with many early deaths not reported.

Not based in fact, just a hunch and with a big dose of suspicion about any numbers from that particular province.

It's the early ones I would be more concerned about. But given the relatively low numbers of infected at that time (even those not confirmed) I don't think it will make a huge difference to the overall mortality rate....maybe 20 extra deaths unaccounted for, assuming the mortality rates everywhere else are close to accurate for total cases. And there's a risk that over the next few months that might stop being the case.

Thank you for your thoughtfulness, dixiegirl. It's a good reminder. I know I'll need to take breaks. I made light of it all in my intro post but it's definitely a stressor for me. I guess I was kind of poking fun of myself. But it's not a topic I can just walk away from and ignore like so many do or even assume the best of. It's compounded with other stressors but this morning I walked out of church and sat in my car and cried because I'm overwhelmed. And I rarely cry. Dh picked me up some low carb ice cream just a few minutes ago.

Then it's breakfast time. The food, he says, is decent. "Today we got eggs, bacon and sausage," he said.Evans says he's been told that test results from nasal and bowel swabs taken when the evacuees arrived in California should be known Sunday or Monday, but blood tests may take longer. Regardless of the results, however, everyone will have to stay in quarantine for a full two weeks.

"Everyone is very accepting toward what is going on,"..."The CDC and State Department are doing a wonderful job of feeding us, keeping us busy, keeping the kids having fun with their parents. ETA, I'm surpised they don't culture through throat swabs every day as in the CDC presser the other day, they said tests are positive, go negative, then positive again. I would think they would want to "test" the diagnostic test for sensitivity and specificity for such while they are there. They may be doing, and he just didn't say? Also, if I was being evacuated, the first thing I would grab onto would be my laptop to bide my time reading WS!

Well, I am glad they didn't just let these 200 people go into regular population as the original plan seemed to have been.

Wondering how many people behind closed doors are ill or already deceased?
Thinking of those people who live alone and have limited contact with others, the elderly, the frail, the homeless, mentally ill ect.
Cannot even imagine the conditions for those in jail, do they even know about CV and if so, do they have access to water, masks ect?
Wondering if any prisoners have been approached to be guinea pigs (by choice or otherwise) for the purpose of drug/vaccine testing?
Not to be crude, but have sex workers closed shop, or have access to um... specially tailored face masks?
imo, speculation.

I hadn’t even considered the prison systems. What a nightmare ! I’m sure their response options would be extremely limited.

A US national security adviser says 'there is no reason for Americans to panic' about coronavirus as report claims second US plane heads to China to evacuate more Americans from Wuhan

the plane, expected to be ready to take off for its return trip to the US on Monday, may not be the last plane sent to the city to evacuate Americans.

"I can't confirm the numbers yet, but this upcoming evacuation might not be the last," an unnamed official told CNN, adding there had been a high demand for the flights from US citizens still in Wuhan... The plane sent Sunday would be the second aircraft to retrieve US Citizens from the city in China's Hubei province amid the ongoing travel ban in Wuhan that has been in place since January 25.

Can't. Unequivocally. But, that was last week. And the virus really hasn't been widespread, yet, in the United States.

Let's see what happens in the next four weeks. Hopefully, this is localized, and will end.

China has detected an outbreak of bird flu near the epicentre of the deadly coronavirus.

The bird flu outbreak was reported Saturday in Hunan, which borders the province of Hubei where the coronavirus broke out in December.

“The outbreak occurred in a farm in the Shuangqing district of Shaoyang city,” officials from China’s Ministry of Agriculture said. “The farm has 7850 chickens, and 4500 of the chickens have died from the contagion.”

The fatal illness, known as H5N1 virus, causes “a highly infectious, severe respiratory disease in birds,” according to the World Health Organisation.

Bird flu is highly deadly to humans who contract it, with a mortality rate of 60 per cent in cases over the past 15 years.

Omg I have these gloves!!!! I bought a multipack that comes in this cute little bag!!!!!! They work great!! Feels like edward Scissorhamds! AND I wasn’t going to admit it, but since we are in here, I bought a face mask for gardening last year BECAUSE I about read about fungal meningitis you can get from soil! I wasn’t going to admit it but WTH. Anyway, it seems my facemasks are the “CURAD” kind and claim to protect against both bird and swine flu lol. Anyway I wore my mask once while gardening ahaha. Seems I have 9 left. Who knew they would be such a sought after item, sadly.

''Two students at Miami University in Butler County are under investigation as possibly having the coronavirus.

In an update on Sunday, the Ohio Department of Health said officials will hold an update on the potential cases at 7 p.m.

On Tuesday, the Butler County Health Department, north of Cincinnati, reported the cases. The two Miami students are being isolated at home and treated for their symptoms, which are said to be minor.

"They had traveled from China recently and come back to the United States," said Hurst. "One of them started to have symptoms yesterday morning, appropriately went to a health care provider who had concerns with the travel history and the symptoms, and then had the individual begin to isolate and then obtain the appropriate specimens."
