It is making me bat chit crazy as Canada has to "wait" for approval to land the rescue plane. The CDC has to wait for an invite from Government to be allowed in etc. etc. The world is watching. We get that if anyone speaks ill their Countrymen will be further delayed in getting home as well as those needed to get into China

This article has a rundown over a number of different Coronavirus-related points, not just the one in the headline.

It also mentions the boy with cerebral palsy who died after his father was taken into quarantine and said that 2 people have been fired from their jobs over the boy's death.

Anyway, the headline issue of the article is China admitting failings and shortcomings in some areas, and that it has need of a lot more medical equipment to be able to handle the outbreak effectively

But there is a shortfall in equipment and China's foreign ministry on Monday issued a global appeal.

Spokesperson Hua Chunying said: "What China urgently needs at present are medical masks, protective suits and safety goggles."

"And yesterday we reported how a man, called Fang Bin, was tracked down and arrested after filming a covert video showing the true scale of the coronavirus as body bags pile up inside a Wuhan hospital."
Oh man..... now that was the video we saw right? I wonder what the punishment for that is

So 2 people fired. Saving face much! Too late. Much too late. The horse left the barn when Dr's were trying to speak out and were silenced. This did not need to reach epic proportions.

This article is about a lady who runs a market stall in Wales, who suffered some problems when a few other market traders thought she'd returned from holiday in China and wanted her to quarantine/isolate herself for 14 days before going back to her market stall. She was very upset over it, and had been in Taiwan, not China.

At the bottom of the article it has some info which might be relevant for JerseyGirl's UK friend who had the stopover in China and is now returning to the UK and concerned about isolation:

The UK government advice is for anyone returning from Wuhan or Hubei Province to stay indoors, and anyone travelling from elsewhere in China is advised only to stay indoors if they are showing symptoms.

I saw a video interviewing him this morning. It seems with a lot of social pressure on their online media platform he was released. He said he'd not slept since then. There was a law saying anyone exposed to the sick could be forcibly quarantine and they have video of him in the hospital around the dead. But so far he was fine. Not sick and no one had come for him.

China's Coronavirus DID Come From Bats

"Bats are likely the cause of coronavirus from China after scientists find the virus is 96 per cent identical to one found in the animals.

The virus, which has killed 362 people so far, was believed to have transferred to humans from an animal, but identifying which one has been challenging.

Now, using samples from seven patients with severe pneumonia caused by the coronavirus, scientists have found striking similarities to coronavirus found in bats.

The DNA is also 79.5 per cent identical with the deadly SARS coronavirus, which suggests vaccines for the now non-existent virus may help with this epidemic."

This report is from the DM, so take it with a grain of salt.

‘Striking’ coronavirus mutations found in one family, scientists say

"Chinese scientists say they have detected “striking” mutations in a new coronavirus that may have occurred during transmission between family members.

While the effects of the mutations on the virus are not known, they do have the potential to alter the way the virus behaves.

Researchers studying a cluster of infections within a family in the southern province of Guangdong said the genes of the virus went through some significant changes as it spread within the family. Viruses mutate all the time, but most changes are synonymous or “silent”, having little effect on the way the virus behaves. Others, known as nonsynonymous substitutions, can alter biological traits, allowing them to adapt to different environments.

Two nonsynonymous changes took place in the viral strains isolated from the family, according to a new study by Professor Cui Jie and colleagues at the Institut Pasteur of Shanghai."

I hope we hear from Fang Bin when this is all settled down. I'm worried for him down the road......

If so, this could be very bad as it means there will be many stains of coronavirus and a single vaccine will not be effective in preventing transmission.

....snipped by me for focus....

the new virus was similar to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), which had killed 349 people and infected 5,300 others in mainland China in 2003.''

Looks like the new Coronavirus death totals in mainland China just blew by the total number of SARS deaths in China. And the infected totals is about double the SARS infected totals already.

"361 have died, there are now 11 cases in the U.S. and the case count has doubled SARS "

Coronavirus update: 361 have died, there are now 11 cases in the U.S. and the case count has doubled SARS

ETA - The total worldwide death totals for SARS is claimed as 770 total SARS deaths in this article:
Overall statistics below from article:

"At least 361 people have died and 17,205 have been sickened by the novel coronavirus, according to the latest figures from China’s National Health Commission. The World Health Organization (WHO) said Monday that outside of China there are 151 confirmed cases of the coronavirus in 23 countries, including the first ex-China death, in the Philippines.

The case count for the virus has now surpassed that of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which had infected 8,098 people during the 2002 and 2003 outbreak. About 770 had died. There were eight reported SARS infections in the U.S."

Here is another MSM article saying about the same.

"During the SARS outbreak, 349 people died in mainland China."

Sorry folks- I feel like I'm power posting. I'll try to tone it down b/c I've got to get more accomplished today.

Looks like 2 of my local 4 have unfortunately deteriorated and have been admitted to hospital.
San Benito coronavirus patients worsen overnight, taken to SF hospital

Aww, hopefully they will be treated quickly and successfully.

I haven't seen anybody power posting against TOS here and please don't feel that way. I appreciate the people that come in at different times of the day because thier real life only allow such Etc. and they post in multiples before getting overwhelmed and moving on to cases here as normal.

And there are so many different points of view.

If you have a 8 things to post in a row, do it! Moo. It's a fast-moving and very different type of thread. Thank you so much for all you post and everybody else that has done so in the last 24 hours, and since this thread started. We have so many different points of views and things that people are posting I have never seen.. appreciate so much.

Thank you to everyone posting here.

We've got a great group here in this thread. And it appears we are self moderating and we are being allowed to post governmental stuff and a few things that aren't here normally e.g. government Facebook's and WHO Etc) in the spirit of the situation to support our efforts to learn more.

I’ve seen a few articles now that have made reference to rapid mutations with this virus. Not only will it add very real challenges to controlling the virus with vaccines, but each mutation can have a huge impact on the mortality rate of the virus - in either a positive or negative way.

  • #539
Many expressed concern regarding this virus mutating into something deadlier. And at the very least how can you produce a vaccine. So much yet to learn as to how this behaves.
