My husband and I (76 and 75) got our first Pfizer shots today and are scheduled for our second one on May 25. So far, only sore arms. We are keeping the week of our second shots free of appointments just in case we have a few bad days. Although we are elated to have gotten our first dose, we will continue taking more precautions than the CDC recommends even after we are fully vaccinated. We do NOT want to get this evil virus again! We live in a rural county in southern Oregon with vaccine resistance and designated at “extreme risk” by the Governor, so I’m not sure if we will reach a safe threshold anytime soon.
As a refresher of my previous posts, both of us were attacked by the virus and tested positive in late January/early February, despite taking obsessive precautions since March. We have no idea how it found us, so it is obviously highly contagious. We both received monoclonal antibody infusions shortly after testing positive. For that reason we were required to wait 90 days for our vaccinations. We could have gotten them Feb 15 otherwise.
I was sicker than my husband and ended up in the hospital with Covid pneumonia for 6 days. Thankfully, my husband realized I was going downhill and called an ambulance…not knowing if he’d ever see me again. My hero! I was in no shape to make that decision. In our Oregon Covid death listings, I read so often of people dying at home and I wonder if they become so ill that they can’t make a decision to seek help until it’s too late. In my case, all’s well that ends well, but I never want to repeat that experience!
