Their chief was Chickens Warrups or Sam Mohawk, as he was sometimes called. President Stiles says in his "Itinerary" that he was a Mohawk sagamore, or under-chief, who fled from his tribe and settled at Greenfield Hill, but having killed an Indian there he was again obliged to flee, and then settled in Redding. All the Indian deeds to the early settlers were given by Chickens, and Naseco, who seems to have been a sort of sub-chief. The chief, Chickens, figures quite prominently in the early history of Redding; he seems to have been a strange mixture of Indian shrewdness, rascality, and cunning, and was in continual difficulty with the settlers concerning the deeds which he gave them. In 1720 he was suspected by the colonists of an attempt to bring the Mohawks and other western tribes down upon them, as is proved by the following curious extract from the records of a meeting of the governor and council held at New Haven, September 15th, 1720:
Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Connecticut - Redding, Connecticut
Thank you. I wonder whether any of those deeds Chief Chicken gave the colonists would be recognized in a court of law today if their descendants kept a copy and continued to occupy the land.

And, we all should note that the reporter Lisa Backus has almost turned into the only reporter writing about this case. She's a former writer for the New Britain Herald (10 years, until 1919). Since then she has been writing free lance. Among her Facebook friends is Jon Shoenhorn and Norm Pattis. Shoenhorn has the most criminal cases under his professional ID in the New Britain courts. Interesting????

Her articles are printed in multiple publications. (Hearst publictions??)

As Chicago and others have pointed out, Schoenhorn is attempting to recreate MT and to run his defense through the media. All publicity is good publicity as Shoe-horn attempts to imply that MT is being/has been treated unfairly by LE, etc. It sure helps to have a reporter in your corner to cover your 'theories'.

AS is taking his cues from a fellow defense attorney, IMO, like NP. NP can perhaps take a few lessons from him.

Do we need to be concerned that one voice, perhaps sympathetic to or influenced by the defense, is occupying such a prominent roll in reporting the 'facts' of this case? s I don't know...just trying to be transparent. IMO...MOO....MOO

Here's a long list of articles with this reporter's by-line. She shares the by-line on it a few occasions with Stamford Advocate reporter. (4-5 times)
These are from Articles by Lisa Backus | Freelance Journalist | Muck Rack

I'm quoting myself, as I continue to see the tight web of figures involved in the JFD/FD case, even as it continues in probate.

Was wondering what was going on in Probate Court and re-read the following article:
Meet Evelyn Daly: The judge who will decide whether Jennifer Dulos is dead

Probate judge Evelyn Daly, who allowed Schoenhorn access to the last probate hearing, is married to Michael Daly an attorney who practices in the Bristol, CT area. Was curious and saw that he is a defense attorney Michael C. Daly | Furey, Donovan, Tracy & Daly, P.C.. In keeping with the transparency angle, what are the possibilities that a judge, whose husband practices in the same community in which John Schoenhorn practices, be slightly influenced by her husband and her former connections to the Democratic party in the area?

Several of the attorneys at the Probate Hearing in October were surprised that JS was a prominent voice at the hearing. Others have said he needed to be there to protect MT rights. I don't know.

From a Stamford Advocate article:
Weinstein said the request for Jennifer Dulos to be declared dead has nothing to do with any ongoing criminal cases.

“This is just going to be an excuse for some media frenzy around the Troconis case,” Weinstein said.

Anne Dranginis one of the lawyers for Gloria Farber, argued that Schoenhorn “does not have standing” to be a part of the discussion regarding Jennifer Dulos.

Attorney Peter Alter, guardian ad litem for Jennifer Dulos, said that even if she was still alive, the estate is “insolvent” and there would be little for her to claim.

“To what end does the prolonging of her being determined to be dead benefit her,” he said.

Weinstein said he is against staging a hearing that would involve testimony from the lead investigators in the case who wrote the arrest warrant charging Fotis Dulos with murder.

“We wouldn’t want to do anything that would undermine their efforts,” Weinstein said.

Hug implored Daly to “look at the big picture” and craft an order determining that Jennifer Dulos predeceased her husband.

“I would urge the court to adopt the suggestions that were brought up by Attorney Alter and the others here today,” he said.

In arrest warrants, Dr. James Gill, the state’s chief medical examiner, stated Jennifer Dulos suffered “non-survivable” injuries during a “homicide of violence” based on blood splatter and other evidence found in her garage.

Hug’s conclusion that Jennifer Dulos is dead is based on two lengthy paragraphs in the 35-page arrest warrant, charging Fotis Dulos with murder and kidnapping.

Based on the amount of blood and blood splatter found in Jennifer Dulos’ garage and evidence stained with blood and her DNA recovered in Hartford, Gill concluded that she was the victim of some combination of “blunt-force injuries such as bludgeoning/beating or sharp-force injuries such as a stabbing/slashing,” the
warrant said.

Judge: More evidence needed on whether Jennifer Dulos is dead

Am anxiously awaiting Judge Daly's decision about the declaration of death. It is complicated....so many attorneys...Is there a way to craft a ruling of obvious death without other legal entanglements? Or JS rushing to the Appellate and Supreme Court with further motions? UGH!

Here's an excerpt from Wiki on the Helle Crafts murder in 1986 (a/k/a the wood-chipper murder)

A prosecution for homicide requires an official determination of the death of the alleged victim; typically this is done by identification of a body – which was not available in this case. With the help of a forensic dentist, the tooth crown found on the water's edge was positively matched to Helle's dental records. On this evidence, the Connecticut State Medical Examiner's Office issued a death certificate on January 13, 1987; Richard was immediately arrested.”

I recall the PC judge said there was no death certificate issued by the ME in the Dulos case. Why not?

Usually probate can't be opened in CT without a death certificate. There may be no precedent for a PC judge to make a determination of death. MOO

This is a P.S., Tink: Found this decision on an action brought against Helle's murderer husband as the fiduciary for her children's interests. So even if Gloria Farber didn't have the judgment against Fotis re the loans, mortgages, etc., she could've sued him as Guardian on behalf of the children's interests. Moot, though, since Fotis's assets aren't even enough to cover the judgment. Moo.

Society of Colonial Wars in the State of Connecticut - Redding, Connecticut
Hi everyone! I've been watching all four seasons of The Crown as there hasn't been much going on in the Dulos case. I decided to check in here and saw the discussion of Chief Chicken.

Chief Chicken was married to my great, great, great, great grandmother. John Read, who settled the town of Redding, was a descendant of my grandfather, Charles Read. The town was supposed to be called Reading, but it was misspelled, so the story goes. The land was traded for just beads.

The last I knew, the deed for the land was filed at the Town Hall in Redding. My mother, who was also from Redding, had a map of the boundarys in Redding, Ridgefield, Georgetown, Newtown and Bethel, just after it was traded and other papers stating what the land was traded for, etc. She saw someone in Redding many years ago to try to figure out who Chief Chicken was. Sure enough, they determined he was married to her great, great, great grandmother. I've since determined that Chief Chicken was indeed married to one of my relatives.

There is a site online called The Town of Redding or close to that.

What's more Chief Chicken signed his name with an 'X'. I have a copy of the deed. Somewhere.

I have a copy of the deed from my mother, but all I would be able to do is tie up the court with a bunch of nonsense. It's been tried before with another tribe. Didn't work.

Did you find out what tribe he belonged to--Mohawk? And/or his tribal name?

He belonged to the Mohawk's. He married an Osborne so that made her my great 4x grandmother. The John Read house is still there on John Read Rd.

I just researched Chief Chicken and who he married. It said he married Chief Ramapoo's daughter. Well, he didn't. He married an Osborne (forgot her first name) who was related to John Read and a descendant of my grandfather, Charles Read. My grandfather's mother was an Osborne. I have proof of this, too.

Back to the Dulos case...

Without FD I don’t think KM is as strong. IMO FD was the pushing force, one with ideas, etc. KM might be more hesitant but his 3x should not let her guard down.

This is fascinating family and CT history information. How fun that you have one of the original deeds.

Thanks for sharing! :)

Hmmmm....Today was thinking about MT's recent pre-trial hearing. I couldn't remember her making pleas on the newer charges against her.

She didn't. I wonder why??? No Pleas:
53a-166* HINDERING PROSECUTION 2ND DEG C Felony 1 5/24/2019
53a-155 TAMPERING-PHYSICAL EVIDENCE D Felony 1 5/24/2019
53a-155 CONSPIRACY TO COMMIT TAMPERING-PHYSICAL EVIDENCE D Felony 1 5/29/2019

Any ideas? Am I missing something obvious?
