Some time ago my sister was an alternate juror for a murder trial in Los Angeles, and died suddenly at home (her condo in a building). I was called past midnight by an LA cop to inform me (PD was called by a neighbor). Her apartment was sealed by PD. I flew out there from CT with my teen-aged son, and was sorting out things she was handling into separate boxes--(my mother's financial stuff, bills etc, her condo association's finances--she was treasurer), when the phone rang and to my hello a woman's peevish voice scolded, "Well, where are you?" The jury administrator. (I had told the cop she was on a jury and to let them know, but I guess he didn't) I never found out what trial that was, though I didn't have time to research it.
I’m very sorry about your sister-that’s terrible!

BREAKING: The Michelle Troconis trial will NOT start Monday due to the need to choose additional alternate jurors because we’re down to two. That will happen Tuesday and Wednesday with the trial now beginning THURSDAY.

Wait and see-he will still be making motions next week, to stall, and then wail about Michi’s lack of access to a speedy trial. And…there’s no proof that it was even her in the truck with fD?? Come on, she admitted it to the police, claiming that she had no idea what he was doing, because she was consumed with a phone call to Petu while she sat in the truck.

Judge Kevin Randolph said during an emergency hearing at the state Superior Court in Stamford Thursday that the juror in question had contacted the court earlier this week after he unexpectedly was fired from his job Dec. 31.

Citing “adverse financial circumstances,” the juror had asked the court to excuse him from the jury so he could begin searching for a new job, according to Randolph.
…….
The juror’s dismissal, however, leaves only six regular jurors and two alternate jurors for Troconis’ trial. Additionally, one of the eight remaining jurors already has contacted the court to inform them he contracted COVID-19 over the New Year’s holiday weekend, according to Randolph.
…….
Regardless of whether alternate jurors are selected by Thursday, Randolph said he intends to begin the trial, which originally was slated to start Monday.

SLIGHT DELAY - Opening statements were set for Monday in CT v. #MichelleTroconis. The jury has already been selected. Openings now delayed until Thursday, Jan. 11. @LawCrimeNetwork will bring you gavel-to-gavel coverage. Troconis is charged in the death of missing mom #JenniferDulos. Troconis' boyfriend and estranged husband of Dulos, Fotis Dulos, died by suicide shortly after being charged with his missing wife's murder. Jennifer Dulos' body has never been found.

Thanks for update.

@Niner -- take note the trial start will still report Jan 8 because juror selection is included in the calculation of Trial Days by the Court.

Weird that an employer would fire an employee who was imminently going to serve as a juror in a high-profile criminal case. Must be some legal protections for jurors against being fired after being selected for a jury? My own opinion.

Q: Must employers allow their employees

to attend jury service?

A: Yes. Connecticut law prohibits employers

from dismissing, threatening or coercing

employees who are summoned for jury service,

respond to a jury summons, or serve as a juror.

Any employer who does so is subject to criminal

penalties. Any employer who dismisses an

employee can be sued by the employee for lost

wages and reinstatement. (Section 51-247a of the

Connecticut General Statutes.)

https://www.jud.ct.gov/Publications/JA027.pdf

(Reply to my own post) Also, employer is required to pay employee/juror full wages for first 5 days of jury duty.

It would be strange except there is no evidence here that the subject juror was terminated from his job on 12/31 because of upcoming jury duty.

Yes, but the reason for firing would have to be something mighty acceptable, under the circumstances--considering it's causing the delay of a trial.

exactly what I was thinking. And even if the juror was terminated because of jury duty, no employer would admit it.

Since the juror only provided he needed to search for a job (versus face a financial hardship by staying on as a juror), he obviously didn't feel compelled to offer if he was terminated for cause.

On the other hand, I'm sure if he believed he was wrongfully terminated due to being selected to serve on this jury, he would have confided this to Judge Randolph when he alerted the Court he was was unexpectedly terminated from his job on 12/31.

Citing “adverse financial circumstances,” the juror had asked the court to excuse him from the jury so he could begin searching for a new job, according to Randolph.

-“Mawhinney is also taking his case to trial, but no date has been scheduled. Prosecutors have recently backed off on the assertion that he will testify against Troconis, but his name is on the list of witnesses who could potentially be called to the stand. “

That’s interesting-is it because they don’t need his testimony, or is it because his slimeyness as a human being makes his testimony less useful, I wonder?
