GUILTY CT - Jennifer Hawke-Petit, 48, & 2 daughters killed in home invasion, 23 July 2007

Caroline Messels comments are very interesting. I also find it interesting that she was the daughter of a preacher. JK certainly was not driven away from religion by the things his parents did, was he? His comments and actions around his gf really show that JK was capable of putting on a lot of different faces and playing a lot of different roles when he wanted to. Notice how she claims he was such a great father and a wonderful guy, but when she heard about the crime the next day, she immediately knew it was him. Wow. Apparantly all along she knew he was dangerous but was willing to buy his stories and act anyway. That shows how dangerous a man JK really is. The prosecution needs to point that out in rebuttal. he has fooled a lot of people along the way and keeps fooling people even now. Any maybe someday, he'll fool a clemency or parol board.

Excellent points pw!

Agreed. JK is a sociopath. Much like Casey Anthony. She too was able to fool people into believing she was a good mother. But since she murdered her daughter we all know that Casey was not the mother she portrayed to the world.

And JK will never be paroled. His choice is life in prison or death. However depending on the prison he goes to he could be assigned a prison job that could allow him a chance at escape which would put the public and the prison staff at risk.

JK is a dangerous person. And if he's not heavily monitored there is no limit to what he could and would do.

The reality of this is that JK will never be put to death, even if that's what the jury gives him. But if he's given death JK will have less of a chance at escape, conning more people, or kill prison staff. If given death JK sits in his cell almost the entire day instead of general population that is able to roam and perform prison jobs.

And according to twitter accounts Judge Blue has indicated that the penalty phase will last up to and through THANKSGIVING!!!!!!!!! They will get to deliberate the first week of December. That's Judge Blues best guess.

Very true and I'm glad you mentioned that because I was beginning to wonder if this was all worth it for what seems (to me) to be nothing more than a symbolic sentence.

I just know that I'm wearing down with this phase and we've got another 2 weeks of it. Can only imagine how the jury is feeling, mind you, I guess it serves more purpose for them because they actually have a man's life in their hands.

Seriously? The jury is being educated on Angels and Demons? Time to wrap this up already...it's gone too far. He's had a fair trial and the jury has enough info. to make a decision. You honor, reign this in. Enough taxpayer money on JK.

I have to agree. This is just getting ridiculous. This really shows the inexperience of Conn courts with death cases. Judge Blue is so afraid of a reversal that he is just letting the defense present whatever it wants with little or no regard for relevance and/or admissability. Wrap it up.

But the defense is doing this for a reason. They're just trying to fill up as many days of testimony as they can, they don't care if it's relevant or if it will really impact the jury in their decision. They want as much time and as many days between the jury and the evidence they heard about the brutal and horrific crimes JK committed. They want the jury to forget the 3 victims and be totally and completely immersed in JK and his life.

Personally I think it's going to work. I don't think this jury is going to sentence him to death, especially after hearing from his 9 year old child.

Which I think will be a shame. Because I think even in jail JK will have the ability to further damage his daughters life and has the ability to continue to be violent and possibly kill prison staff in an attempt to escape. He's sneaky and has been documented as being sneaky. He will never stop being a criminal or stop trying to manipulate those around him.

Because when it comes right down to it this crime would have NEVER happened had it not been for JK. He's the one who picked the home (due to his lust for 11 year old Michaela), he's the one who escalated the violence, and he's the one who started the sexual assaults. He was the mastermind to this crime and it looks like only Hayes will receive the appropriate sentence.

I just hope and pray that once the testimony is over and the next day they celebrate and enjoy thanksgiving with their families they remember that Dr. Petit no longer has one to celebrate his thanksgiving with, and he never will. He'll never get to walk his daughters down the aisle and he'll never get to see his grandchildren.

I hope the jury can see that JK still has the ability to harm those around him, and that in some cases society (even jail society) need to be protected from humans who aren't really human at all. This is one of those cases.

from todays testimony

and if the state is willing to put a man to death then that man should have as much time as is needed to defend himself against the state, he said he would plead guilty to all charges in exchange for LWOP

if the state had accepted this then not one penny would be spent on the trial and the penalty phase, it is the state that has caused a huge amount of taxpayers dollars to be spent,

I sure hope the jury doesn't fall for these tactics. JK should get the same sentence as Hayes. Even though it is unlikely either will actually ever get executed. They should still have to sit on death row the rest of their lives.

JSR, that is exactly what they are doing, trying to distance the deliberations from the trial testimony as much as possible and to try to push the deliberations into the holiday season, where it is less likely the jury would give death. But certainly, the state will remind the jury in summation of exactly what JK did.

The testimony of the director of the halfway house JK was at in my opinion will be able to be used by the state FAR more effectively than by the defense. That director testified as to how reliable and trustworthy JK was, etc etc. All that was a sham of course. As soon as JK got that ankle monitor off he was back in the burglary business. But the testimony shows that JK was able to fool even an expereinced corrections professional that should have known better.

The testimony of teh prison captain I find a bit disturbing. Actually, not his testimony, but the purpose behind the questions. First, this testimony does not go to any mitigating factor and shouldnt even be allowed. But more, i am disturbed by the testimony elicted about how other prisoners get newspapers and know wht JK did and thus his life will be in danger. It seems the purpose here is to hint to the jury that if given LWOP, JK will likely be killed in prison anyway. And that is entirely improper to suggest. Actually, I doubt taht JK would be killed. He would more likely be a prison celebrity.

,

FALSE.

It's Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes that have caused a huge amount of taxpayer dollars to be spent. Had they not committed such atrocities in the first place, we wouldn't be discussing the case right now.

Defend him self against the state. How about an 11 year-old girl defending her life against a ruthless predator? A mother trying to defend the lives of her family? A father beaten and left for dead to prevent him from defending his family?

Sorry, but JK doesn't get an ounce of sympathy from me.

He had his time to defend himself. The state should not be held hostage to criminals who want to plea for LWOP when the law of the land allows for the death penalty. Better go commit your heinous crimes somewhere else or just DEAL with the law. This judge is a wus.
