Stetson man accused in 1986 Connecticut killing indicted on child charge

A man arrested in Stetson nearly two years ago as Connecticut police tried to solve a 33-year-old cold case is now facing a child charge in addition to the charges that he sexually assaulted and strangled an 11-year-old girl in 1986.

Marc Karun, 55, of Stetson was indicted for possession of child on Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Bangor. The charge he faces is a felony punishable by up to 20 years in prison.

If convicted, Karun faces up to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Karun, a lifetime sex offender in Maine, had been convicted of sexually assaulting or kidnapping four female victims both before and after Flynn’s murder, according to court records. While there was no conclusive physical evidence tying Karun to Flynn, authorities noticed that his methods in those previous convictions were similar to those used in Flynn’s killing.

BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - The Stetson man accused of killing an 11-year-old girl in Connecticut nearly 35 years ago appeared in court in Bangor Tuesday to face federal child charges.

Marc Karun pleaded not guilty.

He was indicted on the child charges in March.

His trial for the child charges in set for August.

Thank you @sds71 ! I guess they are pushing this out because of the Federal case. They usually go with Federal first. I see in my notes that the child charges will have a trial in August.
Can you access the Federal site in CT? TIA if you can help on a date.

I'll wait about a week or so to see if the Federal charges (child & weapon possession) have a new hearing or trial date. I do have in my notes that his trial is "sometime" in August. Maybe I'll wait just a week!

@sds71 - is there a way that you can find out the Federal case number for the charge of possession of child - and any hearing dates for that one? And is this combined with gun possession for trial?
On the possession of guns - any trial date yet for August - even though August is almost over...

I have his State charges on 9/30/21 pretrial hearing - so don't need that one.

*Pretrial Hearing (murder) (@ 10am ET) – CT – Kathleen Marie Flynn (11) (Sept. 23, 1986, Ponus Ridge, Norwalk, found Sept. 24, 1986 in the woods behind Ponus Ridge Middle School) - *Marc J. Karun (21 @ time of crime/53/now 56) – arrested (6/12/19 for a fugitive from justice warrant in Stetson, ME), charged (6/14/19) & arraigned (8/12/19) with capital murder with special circumstance, 1st degree kidnapping & sexual assault. Plead not guilty. $5M bond.
DNA Match; Karun faces a life sentence without the possibility of parole if convicted.
*Was in federal custody in his home state of Maine U.S. District Court where he is accused of illegally storing an arsenal of firearms (60 weapons & 15K rounds of ammunition); in total, Karun owned 34 pistols, 14 rifles, 11 revolvers & one 12-gauge shotgun.
*Charged (12/14/19 in Maine-Federal charges), indicted (11/6/19) & arraigned (12/14/19) with possessing a gun with an obliterated serial number, stemmed from allegedly owning a rifle that had its serial number filed away. Plead not guilty.
Police found 60 weapons & 15,000 rounds of ammunition in his Stetson home. As a convicted felon not legally allowed to own firearms.
*Indicted (3/10/21 in Maine-Federal charges) & arraigned (5/18/21) with possession of child . Plead not guilty.
Trial was set to begin in August, 2021 (no date) for child .
