As a physician I believe Damar Hamlin was likely suffering from commotio cordis where a blow to the chest at a precise moment in the electrical cycle stops the heart. Those trying to tie this to vaccine status to project their unscientific beliefs are terrible, horrible people.

My D.H. was just saying the same thing.
So glad an ambulance was close, and that he is in a hospital with the kind of professionals, diagnostics, drugs, and quality care that he will need.

Reminded me of Cristian Eriksen who I think actually was dead for a few moments before the aed. Hopefully this will have the same outcome.

I saw comments on Yahoo that this is related to the vaccine--I was stunned- who could come up with such a horrible bizarre thought like that- it is sickening

If it is commotio cordis… How do you feel his outcome will be with quick response of AED and CPR?
I’m personally very optimistic and hopeful for him and his family.

Praying for all of them as well.
I was wondering the same thing. If CPR was quickly administered (which it was) what are ramifications?

I found this article

. Even when CPR is performed according to guidelines, it can only deliver approximately 20 percent of normal blood flow to the brain. Without sufficient blood flow and oxygen, the brain stops working and the cells undergo changes that lead to damage and eventual cell death.
Maybe someone with more medical knowledge can chime in.

Thank you!

I read something similar but it said if you use AED promptly with CPR it can decrease the chance of brain damage significantly and comes with much more favorable outcomes. Which fortunately it’s been reported they did use AED on him. So I’m going to continue to stay positive and optimistic.

I’ve worked in hospitals and spent a great deal of time in them and it’s amazing what can be done. I’ve seen it first hand.

Thank you so much!

If it is indeed commotio cordis… which no one knows yet for sure. I did find this and it says 89% survival rate if AED is used within 3 minutes. (Very bottom right of page when you open the link)

So I am going to pray hard that he was given AED in that timeframe (if CC was the cause of the collapse) and stay optimistic for a full recovery.

It was especially startling because it didn’t appear to be a vicious tackle, or a pileup, or any other scenario that we are more accustomed to seeing when there’s an injury.
It seemed like the mildest of tackles IMO, Hamlin on Tee.

Prayers.

Replay has started be shown. The play looked so ordinary until DH got up seconds after the play and just fell backwards.
No penalties or dirty play that I can see.

Replay.

Thanks to @Caylee Advocate for alerting me to the replay video.

Hoping to provide a little encouragement- I once witnessed a teen boy go into cardiac arrest and took turns administering cpr (none of us are medical professionals) for around 25 minutes until EMTs arrived. We started cpr within 30 seconds, and the AED within 5-10 minutes. He too was put in to a coma, intubated, and on a ventilator for a couple of days. In total, he was unresponsive for 44 minutes but because lifesaving efforts were started so quickly, he actually made a full recovery with no damage to his organs and brain. The cardiac team gave us some statistics and the survival rate is much higher when cpr/AED is administered immediately.

Hoping and praying the outcome is similar for Damar, who had well qualified physicians by his side throughout the whole event.

This is so sad, and it was almost confusing to watch because it wasn’t a violent tackle. But I am trying to be optimistic since he was given treatment very quickly. I hope tomorrow will bring good news. And I love that his charity has raised so much money!

If it was quality CPR and he was defibrillated quickly...his prognosis is good. The damage comes from the brain not being oxygenated. I am praying that the skilled medical staff on the field knew what they were doing and did it right. Only time will tell.

They have top of the line doctors at all of the games. Each team has their own medical staff and they are 'top tier cream of the crop' because they make big money and they are in charge of caring for employees worth many many millions of dollars to the team.

I am sure that poor kid got the highest quality of emergency medical care right from the first minute. If anyone has a good chance of making it back, he does. He had great, quick medical treatment with an experienced staff and he is in very good health to start with. JMO

Buffalo Bills tweeted this at 1:48:

Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in our game versus the Bengals. His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition.

Also important is that the University of Cincinnati Hospital is only four miles away from the stadium.
It is a top notch hospital.

Prayers for Damar Hamlin, his family and teammates.

Thanks, @katydid23, for the local report WRT the distance to the hospital and the breadth and quality of care at UC Hospital.
I'm sure it makes all of us breathe a sigh of relief to know that his care will be top-notch. I don't see how it could be better or quicker anywhere else.
Time truly is of the essence. :)
