Damar Hamlin collapses on football field; Bills-Bengals temporarily suspended

Only time I've ever seen anything like this was in the 1998 NHL playoffs. Chris Pronger took a shot to the chest, knelt down, got up took a stride or two and then went down. Scary sights to watch

If it was quality CPR and he was defibrillated quickly...his prognosis is good. The damage comes from the brain not being oxygenated. I am praying that the skilled medical staff on the field knew what they were doing and did it right. Only time will tell.
I’m a CPR/AED instructor for American Heart Association. The statistic we use in class is that 90% of cardiac arrest victims who receive a shock from an AED within the first minute of cardiac arrest survive.

Everyone should learn CPR, and every workplace should have an AED in an easily accessible location.

AEDs are very user friendly, and have become much more inexpensive.

Last night watching every second of Damar Hamlin tackle Tee Higgins play unfolding right before my eyes was so terrifying. After the tackle and seeing DH fall the way that he did made football no longer fun to watch. Always knew the seriousness of the game and how fast pace the game is and there are bigger players now, but I’ve never seen anything like that in all my years of watching football. Many prayers are going out for Damar (a vibrant young man) for a full recovery. My thoughts are with his family, friends and teammates. Thankful that the game was postponed last night. Praying for Tee as well, it's part of the game and no one wants to cause injury. Tee is an outstanding young man too.

If it was commotio cordis, this is, IMO, an excellent explanation of what happens when this occurs. A friend lost her son to it 20 years ago in a softball game. So horribly sad.

Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, 24, suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the field during the first quarter of Monday night’s game between the Bills and Cincinnati Bengals, his team said. It’s not clear what caused his cardiac arrest.

Cardiac arrest results from electrical disturbances that cause the heart to suddenly stop beating properly.

In cardiac arrest, death can result quickly if steps aren’t taken immediately. “Cardiac arrest may be reversed if CPR is performed and a defibrillator shocks the heart and restores a normal heart rhythm within a few minutes,” according to the American Heart Association.

More than 350,000 cardiac arrests occur outside a hospital in the United States each year, the AHA said.

A sudden, unexpected loss of heart function also results in a sudden loss of breathing and consciousness.

Cardiac arrest is not the same as a heart attack, although almost any known heart condition, including heart attack, can cause cardiac arrest.

Unlike cardiac arrest, a heart attack is a circulation problem. When circulation is blocked or cut off in some way and blood is no longer supplied to the heart muscle, this can damage that muscle – it’s commonly described as a heart attack; doctors may refer to it as “myocardial infarction.”

If it is commotio cordis… How do you feel his outcome will be with quick response of AED and CPR?

I’m personally very optimistic and hopeful for him and his family.

Praying for all of them as well.
I am praying for him, his family, and friends, too. I pray that his bright light gets to shine for many more years.

I found it shocking and rather irresponsible and insensitive that physicians who weren't even at the stadium were diagnosing Hamlin, some before he had left the stadium. I'm not sure why their haste, but they came off as click-centric. The players, coaches, and fans got it right, prayers and silence. IMO

What a classy guy, and what a classy family. Praying for healing for Damar.

That's amazing and I LOVE seeing this----but they are going to have to put someone in place to handle the distribution because it was originally set up as a toy drive for a small daycare in his hometown.

Does it mean that this little DayCare is now gifted 3 million bucks? I hope not because it could all be squandered quite easily if so.

Someone in Damar's family needs to get legal authority over the financial distribution so he can set up ways to use that money in charitable and meaningful ways.

He may intend for it to go to childhood education and healthcare for needy families etc. And he may want some to go to his family, if his own career is ended.

Nothing will go to his own family, since donations have to be used for the purpose that the donor intended, but it might be possible to extend the gifts of toys to a wider group of Day Cares. I guess it depends upon how the fund was set up.

I've never seen anything like this, so tragically sad. The shock and obvious sorrow of the broadcasters was thick in the air. The fact that there are no replays to be found is very telling as well as the 11 straight minutes of commercials after Damar Hamlin collapsed. I'm sure I've ever seen a NFL game suspended like this

ABC stayed on the air for over a hour after DH collapsed. There was no filler talk about any other NFL games, just concern for Hamlin.

He is reportedly in critical condition right now. I do not expect to wake up to good news tomorrow.

God Bless Damar Hamlin and his family.
I'm not sure if you are talking about the moments following his collapse, when medical personnel were rendering aid, because there are videos online of the tackle and his subsequent collapse. While it is awful to view after the fact knowing that he was in cardiac arrest and that his heart stopped beating, the video is in some ways less disturbing than many others showing really bad hits/injuries.

My H and I thought the worst last night when we turned off the tv, because it is somewhat unprecedented for the NFL to have cancelled play over an on-field injury. Hopefully this signals a change in the way the league treats player injuries.

I completely agree. I hope this does signal a significant change in the NFL's response to players injuries.

My initial posts were in reaction to the coverage in the first few hours after DH's collapse. The broadcasters and MSM tone and coverage was morose. They were not showing the replay video (until many hours later)and showing highlights from his college career which led me to think the worst.

The medical response on the field was unprecedented and to be lauded. It was a stellar example that will be used to train all athletic personnel in the future.

My hope is this has also enlightened all of us to the important of CPR and AED's and will lead to better training of the general public.

And ended up playing two days later. His case wasn't as severe as Hamlin's so that players a huge factor. I think the fact he got CPR and they used the AED so quick will end up playing a huge role in how fast he recovers

“His heart had went out so they had to resuscitate him twice. They resuscitated him on the field before they brought him to the hospital and then they resuscitated him a second time when they got him to the hospital,” Glenn said.

A great and thorough article about the heart condition that appears to have caused Damar Hamlin's collapse on the field.

ETA - my greatest concern at this point is how long it took to resupply his body with oxygen. Seconds and minutes matter

The NFL trains for this type of situation and go over this one hour prior to the game. (UC is a Level 1 Trauma Center).

Cincinnati lights the city in Buffalo colors to support Damar Hamlin.
