I suspected this initially when I heard all the lights were on. An intruder wouldn't leave all the lights on. When I was young and prior to being a parent, I only left lights on and a door unlocked if I had gotten totally trashed. I literally stumbled to my bed and passed out.
Some thinking off the wall- but as a Pediatrician I have seen parents think their child has just a cold and cough, but when they get up the next AM the children are dead. COD was sepsis and/or fulminate pneumonia. One of my parents couldn't bring herself to realize her child was dead and brought her to my office on a Sat. AM. Rigor mortis had already set in. Mom just couldn't comprehend her daughter was dead. She had fulminant Pneumococcal Pnemonia. We could have a cover up of something innocent or of something really abusive.
