David Bowie, 69, has died of cancer, Jan 2016

But it wasn't until my first real stay in Los Angeles, around 1997, that someone told me to take a moment to listen to something other than Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane and Hunky Dory. So I went for a dizzying car ride through the Hollywood Hills and listened to "Diamond Dogs."

All of my nostalgia, instantly turned to awe. I was hearing him sing about fiction as a mask to show his naked soul. This changed my life forever.

Every song of his was a way for me to communicate to others. It was a sedative. An arousal. A love letter I could never have written.

DAVID BOWIE
John and David respected each other. They were well matched in intellect and talent. As John and I had very few friends we felt David was as close as family.

After John died, David was always there for Sean and me. When Sean was at boarding school in Switzerland, David would pick him up and take him on trips to museums and let Sean hang out at his recording studio in Geneva.

For Sean this is losing another father figure. It will be hard for him, I know. But we have some sweet memories which will stay with us forever.

Really sad news and such a shock. I feel for his wife Iman and his two children.

As an aside - his ex-wife Angie Bowie is currently in the UK Celebrity Big Brother house. She has been told of the news privately and has chosen to stay in the house. Apparently she and David couldn't bear to be near each other even 35 years after their divorce. I am guessing she didn't know - she has said some pretty mean stuff about him these last few days.

To me David Bowie is the Andy Warhol of music. The music so ahead of it's time. Always thought provoking and challenging, having to listen to each work time and time to "get it". Some "got it" while others didn't spend the time. Yet to me, I got it and losing him is like losing an innate part of my own past.

"Very sad news to wake up to on this raining morning. David was a great star and I treasure the moments we had together. His music played a very strong part in British musical history and I’m proud to think of the huge influence he has had on people all around the world. I send my deepest sympathies to his family and will always remember the great laughs we had through the years. His star will shine in the sky forever." - Paul*"

It is so nice to see all these favorite and some not heard for a long time songs/videos posted here on WS (Wfgodot TY!), in one place to revisit, and remember, and celebrate the legendary David Bowie.

What a beautiful man. Who else would leave an evocative and sorrowful parting gift like BlackStar? Who else has touched multiple generations through his music, performances, and films? –Too many memories to mention, too much genius to cover, but a couple of standouts this morning are:

Haunting and beautiful rendition of Simon & Garfunkel’s America for the concert for NYC 2001

Someone posted this somewhere out there in the outpouring and I think it befits the stardust that is David Bowie.

“When he shall die,
Take him and cut him out in little stars,
And he will make the face of heaven so fine
That all the world will be in love with night
And pay no worship to the garish sun.”

― William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet
