Is that how it generally works? But doesn't the defense receive all the evidence beforehand? Is there still room for surprise? This is the first case I've really followed do not entirely sure how it works.

It sounds fair enough to me but maybe this witness is overseas and there is a time delay that is causing problems to both of them.
