I have actually been attacked by 2 types of caterpillars in the past (crazy gardener here) and i can assure all of u that scratching the wound would be the LAST thing u would want to do.
'Spitfire' caterpillars spit an acid on u (correct me if i'm wrong doc) and it BURNS.
The other type we call 'abseiling' caterpillars, as they descend from trees, have irritating spines, or fur if u like. These also BURN when they get into your skin, i believe because of their structure, and scratching the area would just make it much worse, releasing more into your skin, as does application of heat. BOTH types of caterpillar attack leave nasty, raised welts that can actually resemble a nice scald., but i've never seen bruising from them.
As a side note, if u are ever attacked by these 'abseiling' caterpillars, apply sticky tape to the area and pull off, repeatedly until the spines are gone.
