Donoghue's account of the lax security matches what the ABC editor related in the article I linked above.

They don't seem to have been treating the event as the high security risk it was.

The armed man, who officials said was a guest at the Washington Hilton where the dinner was being held, was taken into custody and was expected in court Monday. Police believe he opened fire and acted alone but did not say who was his intended target or describe a motive.

“When you’re impactful, they go after you. When you’re not impactful, they leave you alone,” Trump, safe and uninjured and still in his tuxedo, said at the White House two hours later. “They seem to think he was a lone wolf.”

Allen was a guest at the hotel. That's how he got in the hotel with his weapons. He was already there. So maybe the failure was a venue with open access from the guests. It seems to me that the agents and LE reacted bravely and effectively under the circumstances. This had to have taken a great deal of planning on the part of the shooter, gathering weapons, traveling cross country and checking in the hotel in advance of the dinner. MOO

I'm shocked security was so lax the gunman was able to rush in. I'm shocked he thought he'd be able to shoot the president (if that was his goal). The whole thing seems so ridiculous. But actually in the grand scheme of things these days I guess not that shocking.

Here's two perspectives of the venue.

First shows the shooter face down at the TOP of stairs.
Second shows the Secret Service reacting to the shooting DOWNSTAIRS.

The lobby carpet in the downstairs footage looks similar to the upstairs footage.

IMO, the Shooter was on the main floor of the hotel where he rushed the metal detectors heading for the stairs down, but was stopped. Excellent work by the authorities here.

The event was taking place on the floor below where the shooter was (and where he was stopped), also with a large lobby-type area outside of it. Also explains why, as I stated in my first post on the thread, that the shots sounded quite far away in the footage we've seen from "inside the ballroom". Shooter was upstairs near the main entrance to the hotel when he opened fire and was stopped. Shooter wasn't in the room nor was he even on the same floor as the dinner IMO.

ALL IMO. We'll see if time and further info coming out backs up my thoughts/theory on this. Currently looking for a hotel layout diagram ...

It looks like there is the lobby, then down to a terrace level, then down to a concourse level where the ballrooms are.
(AI says the terrace and the concourse are below the lobby ... I haven't checked the AI sources)

Thanks for the clarification. So the shooter did not get near the room where the event was held. I'm sure access to the room was very secure despite the gunman being able to breach that outer checkpoint. No one was killed, not even the gunman. Kudos to the security personnel.

POTUS always sits at the head of the table.

Not at this dinner. This is a dinner for the news media to relax, honor their peers and make jokes about their unusual jobs. Presidents don't always attend. That's why I posed that rhetorical question. It all seems poorly planned this year, to say the least. Very bizarre situation.
