Looks like Elon Musk wants the US to use his company to replace our air traffic control system. Interesting .

No better person to create a successful operating system in a timely ,manner. He certainly has the expertise. The US wouldn't be competitive in space (SpaceX) without Elon, he's the only ride to the space station, excluding Russia. He created and owns the largest, most expensive communication satellite system,(Starlink) world wide. He created Tesla, an advance auto self-driving electric vehicle. He's known to employ the smartest, the brightest, and the best of the best. I can't think of anyone that can compete with Elon.

Something needs to change and quickly. The system is so old, they're purchasing parts off eBay used, moo. Creating, designing, and testing, installation, will take years and will cost several billion dollars, that will need to be awarded through Congress.

The previous administration awarded a contract to Verizon (your link). We've seen no improvement and a rapid decline over the last 6 months.

It’s a conflict of interest, which is unethical, if not illegal. There’s nothing wrong with a thorough, detailed competitive bidding process. That method consistently produces superior results.

If Musk is confident in his product, he shouldn’t be afraid to submit a bid.

Here’s a good article that mentions Verizon is willing to work with Musk to implement an updated system.

Competitive bidding. It’s too important.
Competency and success exceeds competitive bidding. Verizon had their chance an failed. A cell phone company, they have no experience or expertise in designing an FAA system. Millions of citizens from all countries fly in the US on a daily basis, human life is more important than competitive bidding. We're in dire straits with our air traffic control system.

Wondering if there was competitive bidding when Verizon was assigned the FAA contract?

Verizon is horribly expensive and I was just planning to let it go.
Good luck on letting Verizon go. I tried to cancel my service for 3 months after changing to a different provider after 25 years with Verizon. I was never able to speak with a human. That's okay, I filed a complaint with the Federal Communication Commission, after 9 months they are still trying to assist me in a 3-month refund for no service. I received several communication from Verizon they have issued a refund even exported my Verizon phone number and they still charge me for service. After 2 years I still have not received any type of financial refund. I won't give up. Moo

Trump administration’s plan to upgrade the system. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy is open to bidders.

[…]

Duffy said that fiber optic lines will be the priority in the upgrades nationwide, but in some cases the government may look at satellite or cellular technology. Duffy said he is “agnostic” about whether Elon Musk's Starlink or any other company should get the contracts and will let the bidding process play out.

They never released the information, I guess I can get that under the freedom of information act. The contract was awarded in 2023 and clearly we're in a bigger mess than we were in 2023.

The most recent outages at Newark is due to a faulty fiber optic cable, and the cable not the running directly to Newark. Fiber optic cables are supposed to be a specialty of Verizon. Duffy has stated at publicly (moo) it will be the end of summer before the new cable can be installed. Ridiculous, Verizon needs to get that cable installed immediately.

Still trying to figure out why, the US would a award a 2> billion dollars and 15 years, contract to a cell phone company over a company that owns a satellite communication system and works with the FAA on a daily basis thru Space X. We don't have 15 years, we're having to close or reroute air traffic. Hum....

Just wanted to share something military families are currently dealing with.

The "bidding process" might work sometimes, but I do think there are times when it just isn't the best method to select a company.

Our moving process was just overhauled and companies "bid" on being the sole household goods contractor. The company that won was Home Safe Alliance (/HSA). They were supposed to take over most all of our military moves this spring into the summer in a rollout type of fashion. Well it was so horrible that the Army has pulled ALL their moves back into the old system.

HSA bid a LOW price. That price would be what HSA used to pay local moving companies on each end of servicemembers move, and a driver to drive the household goods to the next location. Well moving companies that have LONG been working with military moves have bowed out and won't to the moves because the price is so low they will lose money. HSA knew what the industry pricing was when they put in their bid. They assumed moving companies would just accept the ridiculously low prices because they wanted the business from military moves.

Just as an example a move someone did last year from California to Virginia might pay out $20,000 total to pay for moving companies on either end and a driver, plus insurance for the goods as they are being transported. This year same time of year and same move was paying out half so $10,000 for the same exact move, yet prices of everything are up so not only is the payout half, but it costs the company more.

Service members are being forced to move themselves because the move time comes and no moving company is assigned so they now must rent a truck and buy boxes, etc and pack, load, drive the truck, figure out how to get their vehicles across country since they are now driving a moving truck. AND what they will pay the service member to do that is not enough to cover the cost of the move.

Bidding DID NOT give military families the best company to handle all this, it gave us the low ball one that is NOT qualified to do it.

I think bidding has it's place if there are many companies equally qualified and they would perform nearly equally, but when a company has no business even bidding in the first place and they win because it's the best price? No good comes from that.

Very sad to hear this is happening to our military families.
You get what ya pay for.
Seems the contact started in early2024.

Good luck to you! I buy new cellphones directly to be free of their contracts but it is how the store activated the two new ones that made me scared of Verizon. (In the old time, the error would be similar to putting two sims into one phone and none into the other; they did it with IMEI numbers). I finally realized that the mistake was on their side. Later, a dedicated Verizon store undid it…well, as long as they don’t plug data from two airports into the same slot, lol.

Oh, but he did .... And was the first major investor in 2003. He didn't invent the car or name the company but he did make it what it is today. The first vehicle was not introduced til 2012. Moo ...

Elon Musk co-founded and leads Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink and The Boring Company.

As the co-founder and CEO of Tesla, Elon leads all product design, engineering and global manufacturing of the company's electric vehicles, battery products and solar energy products.

Since the company’s inception in 2003, Tesla’s mission has been to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. The first Tesla product, the Roadster sports car, debuted in 2008, followed by the Model S sedan, which was introduced in 2012, and the Model X SUV, which launched in 2015. Model S received Consumer Reports’ Best Overall Car and has been named the Ultimate Car of the Year by Motor Trend, while Model X was the first SUV ever to earn 5-star safety ratings in every category and sub-category in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s tests. Neuralink tortured moneys to death, not much else, and the Boring Company hasn’t achieved anything except stopping investment in other public transport.

And he bought himself the right to call himself cofounder of Tesla. He did not actually do any of the engineering, except on the disastrous Cybertruck.
