Child abuse forum focuses on support, awareness, services and a challenge

“The hits just keep on coming.”

That is the brief assessment former Cape Henlopen School District psychologist Dave Jefferson gave to a group of about 50 area residents who attended a community forum Tuesday night at Cape Henlopen High School.

“When people are responding to environmental traumas – such as natural disasters – their first feelings are usually fear because of the unpredictability of what’s going on,” said Jefferson, now working part time for the district. “But when the trauma is manmade – such as in the case of the charges against Dr. Bradley, the recent murder of a Cape Henlopen High School student, and now the rape charges against Coach Ott – the reaction as a group leans toward anger, disbelief and denial...."

How did we see this coming? So many of those babies could have been saved from abuse if Beebe would have done their job!! They've never explained fully why Bradley was required to have a chaperone while in the hospital and did nothing to notify parents or the Medical Board or LE about the danger lurking at Bradley's clinic. One has to wonder if this was brought before the Hospital board of directors or if the decision to look the other way rests on a single person. Either way, IMO, the hospital is complicit.

Beebe Medical Center heard allegations about Dr. Earl Bradley 14 years ago

Facing 18 lawsuits in case, hospital could go into bankruptcy

"After four months of revealing little of what they knew about pediatrician Earl B. Bradley, accused of sexually abusing patients for years, administrators at Beebe Medical Center now say they investigated a 1996 report that he inappropriately touched young girls.

Hospital officials cleared Bradley of misconduct after reviewing the complaint by a nurse who worked with Bradley at his Beebe office.

The incident was never reported to Delaware's medical disciplinary board. Police and prosecutors did not learn about the hospital's investigation of Bradley until after they charged him recently with rape and sexual abuse of 103 patients during examinations or visits to an outbuilding at his office near Lewes....."

Note: Article runs 10 pages with some very interesting new information.

The man we want to keep an eye on is Dr. James P. Marvel Jr., a grandson of Beebe's co-founder. Pay attention when you read the article as to how many decisions seem to lead back to this man.

FWIW, I've raised 5 daughters and have 3 granddaughters. I've NEVER had a pediatrician use a catheter to obtain a urine sample in an office setting. That is not the "gold standard" IMO. I checked the article carefully and it appears that the nurse complaining of this practice is not speaking of a child in a hospital setting but of girls in an office setting.

The comments following the article are interesting and seem local. Once again we are reminded that an unnamed judge failed to sign a search warrant for months, that Bradley's office manager sent a complaint to Dr. Marvel which Dr. Marvel swears was never received, and poses the question as to other doctors who Beebe's might be shielding. Maybe the reason Beebe's has been so non-responsive is that they've been very busy tidying up. Now, they have the audacity to claim that they're being scapegoated.

from your link --

Besides, he did all of his evil doings in his office.

I bet he *didn't* do alllllllllllllll of his evil doings in his office !! What does she think might have happened to little kids at the hospital when he pedo-monster was roaming around at 2 a.m....and he LIKED going in at 2 a.m....wonder why????? Because the staff is lighter & more relaxed...less likely for someone to see him abusing little patients - like ones too young to talk???

ugh....why would anybody think pedo-perv doctors would ONLY abuse patients in their office??!!

To add my two cents' worth - there are molestation complaints about Dr. Ayres in California going back to 1966. Numerous complaints to the California Medical Board; to the San Mateo PD; to Children's Services; to Ayres' own partners and to parents.

No one did anything. Unfortunately, this seems to be a trend in cases like this. Most people do not want to deal with this and be the first to blow the whistle.

This is unbelievable: Today's New York Times say that a hospital was cleared by a hospital back in the 1990s. This is the same hospital that at first said there had been no complaints against him. Bring on the lawsuits:

Del. Pediatrician Faces More Charges
Posted: Apr 19, 2010 12:51 PM CDT Updated: Apr 19, 2010 2:52 PM CDT

DOVER, Del. (AP/WBOC)- A grand jury returned an indictment Monday charging a pediatrician already facing more than 470 counts of child sex abuse with even more crimes involving his young patients.

The Sussex County grand jury indicted Dr. Earl Bradley of Lewes on more than 55 new counts alleging sexual abuse of about two dozen additional children.
...................................
The crimes in that indictment were based on videotapes seized by investigators. Monday's indictment was based on interviews with parents of other patients.

Of course my heart goes out to the newest victims who've just been discovered. However, I cannot imagine the agony which the forensics team has been going through. These people are an entire group whose lives will never be the same.

You just know that many, if not most, have a child in their life. How can they do this all day, with such professional precision--in such a way that their work will hold up in court? They have to study these photos, these videos so carefully. They must be in some numb space and they can't stay there forever.

My prayers are really with them tonight.

If I'm not mistaken, Earl Bradley was stripped of his license. IMO, he should no longer be referred to as Dr. or as a pediatrician. He is a former pediatrician or former doctor. I think that's an important distinction.

http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20100425/NEWS01/4250330/1006/NEWS

Bradley's options go only so far

"If pediatrician Earl B. Bradley is found guilty of multiple counts of molesting young patients, he almost certainly would serve the rest of his days in near-solitary confinement.

He would be confined to a 13-by-7 prison cell, 23 hours a day, with at most an hour to feel the sun on his face. Three days a week, he would be permitted to take a shower

He would eat, sleep and use the restroom in that confined space and his only human contact would be with prison guards or inmates in nearby cells.

But if Bradley pleads or is found guilty under a statute that also finds him mentally ill, he could wind up living in the relative comfort of a secure dormitory...."

I sincerely hope someone gets a rope and razor blade and a copy of "The Final Exit" to him and save the tax payers the expense of housing this scum.

I hate to bring this up as it is not a visual that any one of us wants to think about. But Bradley will NOT be alone in that cell. He has literally thousands of hours of memories to keep him company and parts of his anatomy within easy reach.

You all know I'm a pacifist and can never condone violence but can't we remove those thoughts from the man's brain? We can expunge certain horrible memories through hypnotherapy and EMDR for victims. I wish we could do this for pedophiles.

I know the rope would be cheaper and that's certainly an option if Bradley chooses it. I just can't provide it or condone it. It disgusts me that pedophiles not only steal innocence but they get to keep the memories of their actions forever.

Please note that there are four pages to this article.

LEWES: Dr. Earl Bradley's sister sounded alarm on abuse

"A 2004 letter to the Medical Society of Delaware complaining about pediatrician Earl B. Bradley, now accused of being a serial pedophile, included allegations that he fondled girls he treated.

The medical society has insisted the letter from Dr. Bradley's half-sister and former office manager, Lynda Barnes, did not include any suggestion of inappropriate contact with patients.

But Chief Deputy Attorney General Charles E. Butler, whose office has a copy of Barnes' letter, confirmed Wednesday that it did contain an "allegation of improper touching." Whether the medical society knew about the fondling allegation in Barnes' letter, however, is "shrouded in weirdness," Butler said...."

and

"...Butler said officials are mulling whether to release the letter when the report is made public.

Despite four investigations by various agencies in Delaware into Bradley's behavior with girls as far back as 1996, when he worked for Beebe Medical Center, no one ever notified the medical board, despite a state law that requires a written report from medical and law enforcement professionals who "reasonably believe" a doctor is engaging in misconduct or is unfit to practice medicine...."

and

"...Prosecutors have charged that Bradley made videos of 103 victims over an 11-year period ending in December that depict the doctor having forced intercourse and oral sex with girls as young as 3 months old. Videos captured some victims screaming and trying to escape from his attacks, and prosecutors wrote in court documents that five girls appeared to stop breathing or became unconscious while they were raped....."

and

"...Barnes said it irks her that medical society officials initially said they received no letter about Bradley. "Tavani knows there is a letter. She has seen the letter" that Barnes faxed to Tavani's secretary...."

and

"Something doesn't smell right there, does it?"

and

"....If I understood what happened with my brother I would shout it from the housetops," she said. "I'm just as much in the fog as everybody else. I think someone must have fondled him when he was a child. I don't know anything, but that's my supposition." [ETA: Might that be by Uncle William Bradley?]

The reality of what Bradley is charged with doing to children haunts Barnes and the rest of her family, she said.

"The only way we can survive is by blocking out most of the day," she said, "and then there are parts of the day when it comes roaring back in and you have to face it again....."

In assorted Bradley case developments:

EARL BRADLEY: Prosecutors won't oppose moving trial to New Castle County

"Dr. Earl B. Bradley’s sex abuse and rape trial will likely be held in New Castle County, as state prosecutors said that they share defense attorneys’ concerns about gathering an impartial jury pool from Sussex.

In a letter released today, prosecutors said they would not object to moving Bradley’s February jury trial out of the county where he allegedly raped or abused more than 100 children over 10 years...."

And finally some background on Dr. Earl Bradley which we've been waiting for:

http://www.delawareonline.com/article/20100627/NEWS/6270315/1006/NEWS

'Nobody is born like that'

Jailed doctor has a past marked by family chaos, death, solitude

"Aspiring physician Earl Bradley hoped to land a coveted seat on the Temple University School of Medicine’s admission board. Two students would be picked. Bradley promoted his candidacy in an essay.

“He submitted this formal letter, written in crayon and magic marker, that railed against the whole admissions system, saying it took him like seven times to get accepted,” recalled Dr. Roland Beverly, then a student council member and now a California dermatologist.

“We decided he was probably not the right guy.”

and

"....Though experts say it’s difficult to determine how a sexual interest in children is cultivated, Bradley as a child exhibited traits common among pedophiles.

His parents died when he was young. His dad reportedly had an interest in child 🤬🤬🤬🤬 and an uncle was convicted of lewd conduct with girls...."

A very interesting overview of Bradley. Answered some questions that I have wondered about ever since the arrest.

This is a great piece of investigative work into Bradley. Too bad the reporters covering the Dr. William Ayres child molestation case out in California aren't inclined to dig into his background.
