Found Deceased DE - Senior Airman Keifer Huhman, 21, Dover AFB, 7 Feb 2016

The problem is that he was declared deceased after a little more than a month missing, with no body recovered and no witness claiming to see him fall off of the bridge.

keptbycats: I wondered about that also.

I don't mean this as rude but that is definitely not true.

IMO.

I takes many years to legally declare someone deceased without a body. Impossible in this amount of time..

They also mentioned burial. I don't know this is just strange

Keifer's father, Chief Master Sgt. Kenneth Huhman, shared this note on one of the Facebook support groups:

"First and foremost, I would like to begin by telling everyone thank you for all the support during this extremely difficult times," Kenneth Huhman wrote on the "Bring Keifer Home" page. "Based off of all the collected evidence, this leads us to believe that Keifer fell off the C&D bridge into the canal. Furthermore, the evidence also considers Keifer's status to be declared as deceased. Official notification occurred this morning. This decision was not made or taken lightly by the Air Force and Keifer's family."

"After closely reviewing all investigative evidence and in accordance with current Air Force guidance, Col. Michael Grismer, 436th Airlift Wing commander, declared Senior Airman Keifer Huhman, of the 436th Communications Squadron deceased," the 436th said in a statement provided to Air Force Times.

Quote from this article: "Dover police, the lead department in the missing person investigation of Huhman, said the case remains open."

How exactly can you declare someone deceased and have an open missing persons case at the same time?

Apparently the Air Force has decided he's dead, and his parents are in agreement with this, but the Dover PD isn't?

After doing some google searching, it appears the Air Force is declaring him deceased as opposed to DUSTWUN (duty status, whereabouts unknown) or excused absence – whereabouts unknown (EAWUN), missing, ill, or injured.

It seems that "missing" would still be an option, but I guess maybe they found other evidence that's not been disclosed to the public that indicates the likelihood of his death.

The Air Force must have to declare something and decided deceased was the best option, but the police can leave it as a missing persons case I guess.

In the civil world, you just need to convince a judge - supply evidence - and a declaration of death can be made. Depending on such evidence, this can take months or years. I imagine if the military turned over its evidence, this declaration could be made relatively quickly, especially if he has little to no estate. Insurers will typically use 7 years disappearance to pay a life claim but must comply earlier if a judicial declaration is made.

Such a handsome young man, I was hoping they would have found him by now. I still think if he had "Fallen" off that bridge they would have come up with a body by now, even if down river somewhere. This whole thing just doesn't sit well with me. I think there is more to the story. His vehicle with the hood up and having mechanical problems lends more credence to an abduction of some sort to me. And telling your friend you may not make it..because your vehicle is acting up makes sense to me. He probably hoped he would get it fixed and be able to go..IDK just hinky to me. Oh and one more thing, the chance to go and work with his dad and he was excited to do... Shaking my head..Not buying the story.

I agree...and "fallen" can mean "fallen" or pushed or jumped. Which one?

I feel for this family and I know they were seeking closure but so many questions remain. It seemed Keifer was having car troubles so I don't know if he would have randomly decided to harm himeself in the middle of that and what about his sister's comment in the article about his apartment being ransacked? Was that a sign of his emotional state perhaps or was it searched/ransacked?

His body was found on the banks of the canal that was thoroughly searched several times. This is a typical link in many cases. It makes no sense.
