Decorah, IA - Bald Eagle Cam: Watch the babies! #2

I feel so sorry for Dad. I hope he is going to be okay. Don't you just wonder what goes through their minds? I say I am not going to look at that no more cause it is so sad, but I keep going to try to find info on Dad.

Yes, I do!!! Does he mourn the loss or does he just go on about his day? I know the small amount that I watched him after the babies were gone, it looked to me like he was looking around. Almost like, "Where is my family??" This breaks my heart so I can't watch anymore.

What a bunch of wimps we all are! :)

Heartbreaking video of Papa returning to an empty nest.

It appears Papa had brought a fish for his babies but I couldn't see it in the video above, however in the video below, you can see Papa pick up the fish he brought and fly away. :( ;( ;(

OMG that's just too much.

ETA: This just makes me even more angry than I already was! What is wrong with these people anyway? If they were little baby chicks then I could understand. This is horrible.

My late husband was a Native American Traditional Healer. He always said that the four-legged creatures (animals) and the winged ones (birds) are pure beings who have a clear connection to the Creator (God). I believe the father eagle knows that something has happened, but will go on with his life and find another mate. Animals and birds do think differently than us -- my husband taught that they don't dwell on things the way we do but move forward with their lives and survive. I feel terrible about what happened, but now the father just has to worry about his own survival and the eaglets will be taken care of -- the important thing is that the young ones survive so that the family/species moves forward another generation.

I know that our Decorah daddy had a previous mate that died. He worked tirelessly to put all kinds of shiny things and trinkets in the nest in the hopes of attracting a new mate :) It worked and he has the most fabulous mate and mama now!

He's quite a catch himself just as I'm sure the Norfolk daddy is although maybe not quite as handsome!

It's heartbreaking to me to separate him from the babies but I have to trust that they know what they are doing. They know a lot more about them than we will ever know so I pray it was the right decision. I just hope and pray that we don't have to experience anything like this or any other tragedy that might happen with our precious little family.

Hi, I know they took the babies out of the nest, but thought they returned them as I saw them in the nest later in the evening yesterday. Am I wrong about that? xox

They mentioned on a press release that one of their options was to supplement the food dad brought. Ok.....so why not try that first? I just don't understand it.

Hi Scandi, they took the babies out a week ago to band them, then returned them.

They said the babies were about a week from being able to feed themselves. They have to be fed everyday. The dad would have to do the feeding if they just put fish in the nest and I don't think they could risk the wait and see.

I understand what you are saying but I thought it was more for the possibility of dehydration than for being able to eat but I could be wrong about that. I thought they would have given him a chance to see if he could provide before they took them away. It's just terribly sad that he lost his mate and his babies in the same day.

IDK Dr. Fessel, I read they are feeding themselves.

I sure hope nothing like this happens to the Decorah Eagles, I couldn't bear to watch this again lol.

These eagle cams are cool & all, we get to see nature in action, but when the humans start intervening like they did, it's wrong. Nature needs to run it's course.

Back to Decorah......aren't the babies just absolutely huge?? I can't believe how much they grow overnight!

Yes, Yes, Yes. ;} I could hardly wait to get home tonight to check on all the babiies. The 2 little Hancock eaglets are at a real cute stage. I have noticed the smaller one nuzzling with great affection his/her older sibling. LOLOLOL She is so very 'cupe', her little head perks up at the slightest thing and she always looks to her bigger sister/brother to see what they are thinking.

2 questions, do we know how to tell the sex of these little ones? Maybe by how far the beak goes under the eye? Can't remember which is which now. And do they talk to each other? I hear the peeps but don't know if that's talking. I've also seen the parents open their beaks slightly, like they're communicating. Just curious is all. xox

You're asking the wrong person scandi! LOL. I'll check around the web for some answers to your questions as I'm curious too!

awww, too cute about the Hancock babies!

WOW, Daddy Decorah has the major 'itchies' !!! Mites or bugs I guess. Poor guy. The one little eaglet is sitting straight up watching his dad, probably wondering what the heck? LOL
