I watched the PBS documentry earlier today. I always knew Eagles were big, but didn't realize how big they really are until the guy picked up the injuried eagle.

Morning, eagle friends!! Dad is sitting on the babies now, though I don't know how because they're getting so big!! Is that a giant rat laying dead next to him?? He picked it up a few minutes ago and I saw the long skin tail. Groosssss.

Hopeful, did you notice the spots on the babies? They are getting real feathers!

  • #508
Mom and dad are both there right now.

Mom flew away leaving dad with the eaglets.

About 11:30 Mom was upset about something and flapped her wings. Had to turn it off because hubby couldn't sleep with her chattering. I like to leave the laptop next to my bed to check on them all night! I'm officially addicted!

I keep the sound off most of the time, the wind noise drives me nuts.

The timing of your posts tells me that your getting less sleep than Mom!

Yes! They're growing so fast, aren't they? It's amazing!

If I did that, I'd never sleep. I fear I'd be like the mother of a human newborn and wake at every little sound. :)

I do find that they're the first thing I think of when I wake up though. I never have time to check the computer before I leave the house for work but it's the first website I open as soon as I sit down at my desk.

Raptor Resource has placed an update on the top of the Ustream video which will hopefully do away with concerns about the owls....

raptorresource Owls seem frightening, but the eagles have dealt with them before. Their young are safe. updated 1 hours ago

I find myself getting seperation anxiety when I can't watch!

Thank you for posting this link now I have a new obsession that will take up every spare minute of my life.LOL

This is the COOLEST thing EVER.

Where I live I have a bald eagle nest within my view but I can't see them like this.

Saw a bald eagle swoop down and get a mouse recently. OMG so beautiful I can't even begin to describe.

We have to keep our little wiener dog in when the Eagles are out because I was told by a ranger that he would make a tasty little treat for them. Also have to listen for owls at night. They are HUGE around here and they also swoop down and pick up live animals.

Ok, back to watching mama eagle. If you can't find me don't worry. I'm not dead. Just watching mama.

Love,
Tricia

How long has that fish been sitting there? It's in the upper right hand corner?

Dumb Question Alert: Why hasn't mama eaten the fish? Do they save food for later?

YOu're welcome about the link :) and yeah they do save it for feeding the babies.
Apparently their stomachs have some pretty strong acid so no matter how putrid something gets the eagles won't get sick :)

I believe that fish was caught yesterday but I'm not sure. Dad seems to come home with them fairly often and there are several carcasses (fish, squirrel, rat, etc.) piled along the edges of the nest. They sit there for days and days and pick off of them, even after we as humans would think they've gone bad. I guess it's good for them but gross for us watching. :)

The only time I've ever seen mom and dad eating for themselves is while they're feeding the eaglets but maybe I've missed a feeding somewhere.
