Decorah, IA - Bald Eagle Cam: Watch the babies! #2

  • #681
I finally saw them too. I cannot believe how different they look.; as if they sprouted feathers overnight. Stay warm little ones and fellow sleuthers that are caught up in this storm. I actually have some sun peeking out this afternoon in Ventura, CA today and I found some extra sunshine in my pocket from Santa Monica beach last summer.... her ya go.

Thank you kindly for the sun. :) It's pouring here today, windy and very cold.

Snow covers popular bald eagle nest in Decorah, Iowa

But fans of this real-life nature reality show should not become too concerned. "Those birds are very prepared for this type of thing and will handle it with more ease and grace than the many people who have become addicted to watching them," said Ann Hobbs, a spokeswoman for the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology.

I didn't even know there was a thread on the little eagles and their parents. I have been watching also and from time to time record them.

I uploaded this video today as it really touched my heart with one of the parents sitting on the little ones in a snow covered nest. At one point calls out for some relief.

I did this one the other day.

I have had the urge all day to climb a ladder and build a tree house over that nest. :(

I told my husband I was going to buy him a ticket to Iowa so he could put up our little hummingbird umbrella (works in rain at least). He's a construction contractor so he should get along with Daddy Eagle just fine!

Thanks for posting the great videos PattiG and the photos, Adrienne37. The Mom looks so forlorn in that first video. Hopefully, they're back the sunshine of the second one very quickly. Weather forecast for the area looks like it's going to be more of the same overnight and into tomorrow though. :(

The lens is blocked a bit right now but I can't see any movement or bird parts in the clear spots. Are they even in the nest?

Yes all eagles are fine. babies just ate, and mom and dad are settling in for a long wet cold night.

They are all fine, I saw them earlier this evening and was able to grab a picture of one of them eating although it was very difficult to see which one.

I love your photos Adrienne. Especially the ones where mum and dad are there huddled together. Isn't nature something!? I tried to comment on them but Photobucket's not cooperating.

Patty thank you for your videos. I'm so glad that the Raptor team is reporting that the Eagles are well prepared for this weather. It's here as well and I'm not prepared.

At least with all this sleet the smudge that was on the camera yesterday will be gone.

I'm glad you enjoyed them. I still have a ton more to post and plenty more to label but sometimes RL gets in the way (dangit). I try to keep it updated as soon as I grab the screenshots so always check in. I'm also trying to remember to add dates so that we can see how they are growing. I just love this eagle family and I'm so appreciative that the word got out about them and we are able to see just how Mother Nature truly works. It's been an absolute pleasure for me to be able to tune in to them every day (even though RL does tend to interfere from time to time).

Storms were raging through here last night so I had to shut down, couldn't wait to get on line first thing. I went to that link posted above the live shot, a lot of good info there. http://raptorresource.blogspot.com/ I hope today is a better day for this family and a better watching day for us.

Mama nest sitting and I hear sounds like Papa warning of some preditor in the area.

Awww.....is that a faint bit of yellow that I see on the biggest eaglets beak? Papa is feeding them. They double teamed in the feeding for a while then mama flew away.

Dad was sitting on the babies and flew off, only to return moments later with a live fish that he caught and now he's feeding them! I guess he's really giving Mom a break this morning after her ordeal yesterday. All three babies look healthy and strong this morning. Thank goodness the snow and rain has stopped.

I now understand the term pecking order. Papa was feeding the 2 bigger ones when little eaglet tried to intercept middle eaglets bite. Papa nudged him back with his beak, LOL! After a few more bites to middle eaglet, Papa began feeding little eaglet his portion. Pecking order! LOL!

I am fascinated with the routine of feeding, tidying the nest, etc. Wouldn't it be nice if all human parents cared for their babies like these two eagles do?

I'm so glad the ice is off of the lens now and we can watch them again. I'm hoping for a warm-up soon. It's supposed to start warming up here in WI tomorrow so it should be about the same (but a little earlier) for our eagles.
