or ninth? i mean, come on now. still haven't heard one "mysterious" death from any hotel workers, bartenders, room cleaners, you get my drift. locals. i'm sure we will hear about more tomorrow, too, bc just are not figuring out that their loved ones DIDN'T have heart attacks, or from "overeating" on the trip. (ffs). the real kicker for me is that they alllll americans. huh. interesting.

A Staten Island woman became the latest tourist to mysteriously die in the Dominican Republic Monday during a birthday trip to the country.

Leyla Cox, of New Brighton, died on June 10, just one day after celebrating her 53rd birthday, her distraught son told the Staten Island Advance, saying she would still be alive if she didn’t go to the popular island.

William Cox said US Embassy officials told him his mother’s death had been ruled a heart attack following an autopsy, but he said the spate of recent unexplained deaths of US visitors at the popular tourist destination made him suspicious.

“I am overwhelmed and confused and in shock,” he said Thursday. “I have a right to be suspicious.”

“With everything going on in the news right now, we think she’s a casualty of what’s been happening.”

so, eighth person?

A 42-year-old yoga teacher from Pennsylvania died this week when she was swept out to sea in the Dominican Republic — the eighth American tourist death reported in the country in recent weeks.

Surely Miller’s body was recovered by a local fisherman Wednesday after she vanished from a beach the day before in Cabarete, Dominican Today reported.

I think if we are counting Barbra Corcoran's brother and Leyla Cox (which I posted up-thread) that would make it 9

How horrible, the tainted alcohol contained methanol, which is in windshield washer fluid. This is what those poor people were drinking, just unbelievable.

We used to be cautioned about drinking the water and having ice in our drinks when visiting overseas.

Methanol has caused countless deaths worldwide because it is substituted for the ethanol which is the alcohol that is in beverages.

Here's an article where 100 people were recently killed in India drinking alcoholic beverages highly contaminated by methanol.

Bootleg Liquor Kills 100 In India's Worst Outbreak In Years

As alcoholic beverages are drunk worldwide, governmental officials quickly realize they can tax alcoholic ( ethanolic) beverages to reap great tax revenues. So the legitimate ethanolic beverages are expensive and absolute alcohol ( 100% ethanol ) is difficult to get ahold of. So unscrupulous people dilute ethanol with with methanol, which is cheaper, and not that easy to detect by taste or smell. It has harsh awful side effects that can, indeed, be fatal or severely debilitating.

I think the advise given above is extremely important: Drink bottle beer, or maybe a locally-produced legitimate beverage that you have seen local drinking. Don't drink Western branded names or liquors like Scotch, Gin, Bourbon. Stuff that none of the locals drink

You are correct. It's probably hard for people just to have a beer, especially when they are at an all inclusive resort and see these beautiful frozen alcoholic drinks in the heat. It's tempting. :)

I read that the majority of tourists to DR are actually European, rather than USA or Canadians

Dominican Republic Shares Record-Breaking Tourism Numbers and Future Plans

In the first two months of 2019, Dominican Republic welcomed 604,977 tourists, an increase of 8 percent compared to this time last year. In that timeframe, 65 percent of those tourist arrivals came from North America, specifically the United States which continues to be a key market for Dominican Republic.

I don't think Cox's death should be grouped with these suspicious deaths because Cox drowned in a rip tide and not under suspicious or undetermined circumstances.

Sounds like her cause of death will remain "heart attack" as the family can't afford a toxicology report. Furthermore, she is going to be cremated. And finally, they don't report which hotel she stayed at or the circumstances surrounding her death, so mods, please delete if appropriate. Extremely sad, horrible and frustrating.

"It is unclear who found Cox or if she died in one of the hotels where six other US tourists have unexpectedly passed away in the past 12 months...

"The woman’s family said they could not afford the cost of their own toxicology report and is following her wishes by cremating her body before returning her ashes to the US."

Another article I found quotes the son saying this:

“I don’t know how she died. I don’t know where she died — I know it was in a hotel. I don’t know if she was in a room or at the bar,” Will said in a phone interview.

“The Dominican Republic has not released an autopsy report. They will not do a toxicology report on her because they say the toxicology machines in the Dominican Republic are broken,” Will added.

I'm still not sure exactly what IS on topic.... I guess all heart attack/edema/GI ones?

Also, with all of the other beatings, shootings, drownings, car accidents... it might be worth just making a Dominican Republic forum. Then it's all in one area and easier to tell that there are already threads for the other topics?

Yes, on topic are as you say, heart attack/edema/GI in hotels in the Dominican. Off topic in this thread are posts that are general misadventure, general crime, and personal anecdotes.

Not all mysterious deaths in DR are Americans. Up thread I mentioned my Canadian friend who died without a reasonable cause, and here's another report of a Canadian woman's death.

I’m confused too what’s off topic. I guess anything other than DR deaths

Re: "Leyla Cox drowned in a rip tide"
^^That is not what I find in news reports.
I find "heart attack" "in her hotel room".
Shark Tank star Barbara Corcoran says her brother 'died of natural causes' in Dominican Republic | Daily Mail Online
The latest victim, Leyla Cox, 53, of New Brighton was found dead in her hotel room on Monday, and authorities told her son William that it was a heart attack.

However, William says no he has been told that toxicology report has been carried out on her because all the country's machines are broken.

Son searching for answers after Staten Island woman dies in the Dominican Republic
The cause of death was given as a heart attack.

"She was too young to die of a heart attack, she was too healthy," William Cox said.

Now suspicions are arising as the radiologist from Staten Island is the latest tourist to die in that country, though all the deaths have not been linked, and are in different hotels.

"My mother never had heart problems," said Cox. "She was in good health and when you see all these red flags come up and you know all these people dying and when it happens to you yourself and you see all the misdirection I've been dealing with, I'm not suspicious, I'm certain."

William says he doesn't know the circumstances surrounding his mother's death. The US Embassy hasn't released that information. But what's even more concerning is that the Dominican Republic isn't doing toxicology testing unless the autopsy suggests it, and those results could take up to three months.

This is a drowning, so MOO would not be part of
“heart attack/edema/GI” deaths in the DR. Tragic, but shouldn’t be counted in this topic.
