I have thought throughout this case that it was odd how little we know about his wife and what she knew. Arguably she has a right to privacy, but then again I also can't help but ask how could someone be married to and live with someone in cramped conditions (by the looks of it) and be completely unaware of the brothers radicalisation? Older Tsarnaev brother is dead, the younger one isn't talking. They can't charge the wife if they don't have enough evidence against her.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's mother is a mother and I feel sorry for her.
She loves her children just like everyone who has children and even tho' she sounds a little crazy, she
doesn't want her son to die, so, in her mind, she can't grasp what he has done as true.
She thinks he will be saved by Allah because he is "innocent".
She is "living with the fairies" of course.
I feel sorry for her.

JMO-5 pressure cookers come home to their teeny apartment. And lots of other assorted very odd hardware type things. She wasn't clueless.

Kind of an interesting read, points out there has been no announcement that she's been exonerated.

I can understand that, being a mother too. However her mental state has seemingly gone seriously haywire in the last few years. Before she left the USA she was charged with theft. Then, suddenly she's a devout Muslim touting the benefits of jihad to her family to the point of driving her husband off and her two young sons with once promising futures into acting like monsters.

For instance, convincing Tamerlan he was ready to die for Islam in taped telephone conversations,
"Zubeidat discussed jihad during a 2011 phone call with Tamerlan that was taped by a Russian government agency, and intelligence officials also discovered text messages in which his mother discusses how Tamerlan is ready to die for Islam."
http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way...arnaev-spoke-of-jihad-with-mother-reports-say

She also encouraged him to quit school and boxing. :/
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/...ston-marathon-bombing-suspects_n_3176009.html

She also sweetly told CNN that "If they are going to kill him, I don't care.'"regarding Dzhokhar.

So, in light of all of that, I find her hard to sympathize with. I think she went a long way in pushing her children into this extremist viewpoint and ultimately will likely be the cause of both their demise. :( My heart is still sad for her as a mother because I pray her crazy-talk is just for show but I seriously don't know. It's my opinion that all of their kids were raised with a heavy helping of emotional abuse and unfortunately they coped by becoming extremist. It's all such a sad waste of life, to be honest. If none of this had happened, imagine how much better so many people's lives would be. Not just the victims and their families but also the bombers and theirs. Tamerlan's daughter will never know her father, etc. It's such a catastrophic, sad situation. In my opinion, it likely could have been averted by some mental health intervention in the trio who had radicalized long ago but by Apr. 2013 it was far too late for that.

Every time I think about all of those affected, it really makes my heart ache. It could have all been so different.

Oh regarding Katherine, there is no doubt to me she knew something was up. 200 large firework mortar shells and 5 pressure cookers in a small apartment and she doesn't notice? Pshaw... I have to wonder if she doesn't have a deal with the FBI as some type of informant. I think it's odd that she hasn't been prosecuted and remains close to his family... makes me definitely take pause.

She truly sounds insane. None of what she says makes sense, even from an extremist standpoint. I wonder if there wasn't more of a mental illness issue in this home than has been previously mentioned. I've read that she's the one who influenced Tamerlan to start seeking jihadist teachings and pushed him to radicalize. In my opinion, there are more than a few screws loose in nearly every member of this family. I'm not surprised her husband left her and ran back to Dagestan to get away from her. Now he's stuck in Makachkala with her. You reap what you sow... quite literally. Yikes!

I agree. And, let's not forget she ran away from shoplifting charges.

Maybe I will be hated for this, but I agree with the article.

But although those things may all be true, the real reason to spare Tsarnaev's life is that no crime warrants the death penalty. The jury should reject capital punishment and sentence Tsarnaev to life in prison without possibility of parole because that is how a mature society acts. Not out of vengeance. Not out of passion. Killing another human being is immoral, whether by bomb or by lethal injection.

...Tsarnaev deserves no sympathy. But he should not die at the hands of his government. To execute Tsarnaev would be to adopt the mentality of terrorists, who seek to sway the actions of others through violence. This country is — or at least should be — better than that.

Not much to add except I'm glad he was found guilty. As a runner, the Boston Marathon Bombings shocked me & honestly ticked me off as well.

I am usually anti-death penalty because I'd prefer to see criminals rot in prison & be subject to abuse of other prisoners, etc but sometimes serial killers and terrorists make me doubt my anti-death penalty stance. I think Tsarnaev would like to be a martyr. I'd like to see him in prison (in general population, which I know probably won't happen), having to live with the knowledge that he likely ran over his mentor/brother.

If he does get the death penalty, I can't say I'll spend anytime feeling badly about it.

Judge to Tsarnaev jury: Don't go to the Boston Marathon

Pope Francis Would Spare Dzhokhar Tsarnaev’s Life

"...Pope Francis has gone a step further, arguing that life imprisonment itself is a “hidden death penalty” and should be off the table as a means for punishing criminals...

...One such voice has recently spoken up, the sister of Sean Collier, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology police office who the Tsarnaev twins murdered in the aftermath of the bombing. Jennifer Lemmerman wrote the following on her personal Facebook page:

Whenever someone speaks out against the death penalty, they are challenged to imagine how they would feel if someone they love were killed. I’ve been given that horrible perspective and I can say that my position has only strengthened. It has nothing to do with some pursuit of forgiveness. I can’t imagine I’ll ever forgive him for what he did to my brother, to my family, and I’ll have to live with that for the rest of my life, whether he is on this earth or not. But I also can’t imagine that killing in response to killing would ever bring me peace or justice. Just my perspective, but enough is enough. I choose to remember Sean for the light that he brought. No more darkness...."
