Wowzers! This is crazy!

http://www.who.int/mediacentre/factsheets/fs103/en/

People remain infectious as long as their blood and body fluids, including semen and breast milk, contain the virus. Men who have recovered from the disease can still transmit the virus through their semen for up to 7 weeks after recovery from illness.

What do you guys think this means? Her condition is still listed as good . . . why would they think of moving her?

This is so confusing to me. Maybe to keep the EBV cases centralized? Maybe to decontaminate completely Presby? Idk, hypothetical.

Guildlines for fever have changed to lowered threshold down now......................not 101.5 now to 100.4

This is super helpful cuz I bet a healthcare worker with symptoms and a fever of 100.3 is probably just fine. (((Roll eyes)))

And , if you think about it it makes sense. All viruses go for RNA/DNA. I would think that since they determine everything about the next human they make(!) that there is a lot of RNA/DNA in semen.

Althourgh media keeps wanting to make this different from HIV, IMO it is not - its just a different model. HIV has not gone airborne in decades, Ebola has been identifued since 76. That Malburg one has been around for ages - apparently it takes alot of transmissions for it to mutate.

HIV transmission is from contact wiht body fluids, so is this, IMO. And that too, makes sense, a virus cant thrive in "places" where DN/RNA are not - they love DNA?RNA its what keeps em going
IMO

Have no clue what this means just wanted to do the RNA/DNA connection:

chose two RNA targets that can bind to the same capture-strand DNA but have ...

Possibly to provide both nurses with the same level of care?

ETA: at Nina's request?

Follow up: One suspected case in Brazil - won't know test results until Saturday. None in India that I could find.

From the India Times:

I truly fear for India if Ebola makes the jump there. I visited last year and the population density is unnerving as well as the slums in large cities such as Mumbai that have people living densely packed in extremely unhygienic conditions. :(

Cohen says that hospital will no answer her questions
O/T KDKA Pittsburgh news admitted that the local big hospitals are asking for protocol help and education............not prepared!

Asking questions and asking for help is Always a good thing.

Staffing maybe.

Betcha that's it!

Isabelle, in your history of nursing, have you ever handled a quarantined patient? I'm wondering the protocol for removing protective gear. Is it similar to what decontamination rooms are like in nuclear power plants where there's sprayers and such? Are items hosed or sprayed down in a separate room adjoining quarantine, then removed before exiting that room? I'm mostly wondering if the healthcare professional is decontaminated before entering public space or is everything done in shared space?

They are realizing to stop this we need them in a hospital equipped with handling Ebola. There needs to be a shower after they leave the room etc. If not we are only going to keep exposing the HCW. Do not get me wrong I have faith in the HCW, I do not have faith in what PPE these men and women get to use.
