You know, I once went and got a standard poodle from a family who was "giving" it away. It was supposed to be a 5 year old happy healthy female. When I got to the home, the dog was obviously much older than 5. I thought she looked double that. She was either suffering from terrible cataracts or blind. She smelled horrible, like a skin disease. Then a little boy maybe 3 or 4 years old came running into the room. As the so-called mother watched, he said he wanted to show me something that he could do. I was expecting a somersault or something. Instead he grabbed the dog by the collar, yanked her off the couch and proceeded to drag her all over when she was obviously not well. IIRC she also had huge teats indicating, to me, she had been bred. I decided right then and there to take the dog. I wouldn't keep it because I knew it was a senior dog and my children were very young. I didn't want them to get attached to a dog that may well die in a year or two. But I was gonna rescue the dog from that horrible house. As I leashed her up and took her out into the sunlight, I could see mange and skin flakes and fleas all over her and her hair was awfully sparse. I loaded her into my mini van and drove off. I called to have her flea dipped on the way home and they had to use something special because the flea dip would have burned her open wounds from the bites and the mange AND I had to treat my vehicle for fleas all over it. I called poodle rescue right away. OMG what horrible people!! They gave me such a hard time over the phone and finally showed up late the next day. They didn't like it that I had the dog crated on my back porch. Sorry but she was in poor health. I had small kids and another dog. Any moron knows that a scared sick animal will bite in self defense and I didn't want to chance it. I got her out of an abusive situation, fed her, watered her and gave her shelter, not to mention the bill to treat her skin!! Then I told the woman that I still wanted another standard but one that wouldn't break my kids heart at any time. This woman demanded to come in my house and use the bathroom. I had some laundry on the floor and, cmon, laundry can be embarrassing, depending on what items are in it. So I ran upstairs, threw it all in a basket and put it in the shower and then told her to go ahead. Do you know that woman asked me, "What took you so long up there? You're not, by chance, trying to hide something are you?" I could have popped her!! She took the poodle and I swore never to adopt from her! By the way, the poodle turned out to have been unspayed, 9 years old, suffering from cataracts and having a chronic skin affliction. She was adopted and still alive when I last checked on her 2 years later. Sorry, just my vent.

Good! Give the dog back, and stop and think about what the goal here is supposed to be - a good home for the dog. Not a sop to your ego.

Ditto!

I wonder if this will backfire on other rescue groups?

You know, like "We're tired of Fluffy anyway, but we didn't know we could return her! Let's take her back right away, and we then can look for that new pet we've been wanting!"

Could the backlash of all this be a crisis of excessive pet returns to already overcrowded shelters and rescue groups? Just wondering.....

I saw that witch from the rescue/boutique on ET and she looks like a lesbian to me. (My opinion only...not saying she IS for certain.) I bet the new "family" is much of the same.

Frankly, I think she is vindictive, cruel, and overly judgemental. She obviously doesn't care who she hurts. She just wants to be "right" now and have the power. What a *itch!!!

"I love Iggy and I just want him back," says Ruby, the distraught little girl at the center of Ellen Degeneres' dog drama. 12-year-old Ruby, the daughter of Ellen's hairstylist, says she misses Iggy, the terrier mix puppy given to her by the talk show host. Ruby says she's heartbroken that her dog is gone, taken away by the dog rescue agency because Ellen violated the adoption contract that she and girlfriend, Portia de Rossi signed, promising not to give the pooch away.

It was a three-hour standoff in the family's backyard between the family and the adoption agency. The family called police, but in the end, the agency took the puppy back.

According to Cheryl, Ruby's mother, someone from the adoption agency "came to the backyard, grabbed Iggy, took the collar that had our name on it, pulled it off, and just said, 'This is my dog.'"

WHAT?? She adopted it out to someone else??? Wow.. she IS evil!!!!!

I hope the family gets the best lawyer ever and sues the sh*t out of that b*tch.
What does she (and other dog adoption agencies) have against kids....??? Unless a kid is hyper or abusive to an animal.... don't you WANT kids to grow up around dogs, and have that enriching experience?? So... now you can only have a rescued dog if you are rich,, and you are home all day, AND childless...??? WTF?!?!
This young girl will always remember this experience and I'm sure now she will have a bad association with rescue groups because of it.
God, no WONDER people buy from breeders!!

This makes me wonder how, legally,, a pet adopter can secure an adopted dog for themselves. In other words,, how do you say OK, the dog is MINE now.. you (the group) have no more power over me...?

Most don't have anything against kids reb. With the Dane rescue I work with they don't adopt Danes younger than 2 to families with toddlers/small children. Because of their size and they're very active puppyish still, they could unintentionally injure a toddler/small child. We're talking about "puppies" that are over 120 pounds, and they're happy tail wagging can be dangerous. I have gotten bruises on my thighs and butt from getting hit with their wagging tails and knocked down when they get excited to see me. My furbabies don't have a clue how huge they are (154# & 141# now) and they're slightly over 2 years old. They settle down and get real mellow after 3 years of age...so those are good for small kids because they're not puppy hyper. Also some breeds of dogs are not suited for small children regardless of size.

But yes, I have serious doubts that this woman is running a legitimate rescue. She does too many things that are just not up to par for a rescue organization...what a vindictive b*tch she is. We discussed this on my Dane forum and we all pretty much agreed all we would have done was look at the home, if it was a good home for the dog...just revise and have the hairdresser sign the adoption contract. We get desperate trying to finding adoptees for our dogs, and for every dog that gets adopted makes room for one more to be fostered. Right now we have about 42 Danes waiting for homes. We have a fence requirement, but if you live in the country on a couple of acres or more, you don't really need a fence. The fence requirement is not being picky, but where I live, you cannot let your dogs out without being leashed or in a fenced area. We also have adopted to people who live in apartments and singles who work all day. They are wonderful pet parents too!

Just asking, (not being rude) but what does being a lesbian have to do with this?

Maybe Ellen should have called in the Dog Whisperer to make nice with the kitties instead of going thru all this!!

I have a theory that the witch that owns the rescue might be discriminating against the family because they are hetero. LOL Now...when we see who she readopted the dog to...let's see if it is a lesbian couple as opposed to another type of family. Hmmm...

I saw Ellen break down-

Her pain came from her heart and it hurt me to hear how hurt she was... I love Ellen-- love her show , feel as though its "party time" when she comes on and have often danced with her and over my own coffee table with her and the audience :D

Why the shelter would rather keep the dog than give it back to a loving ,caring family is beyond me - IMO would be only to be spiteful if they give it to a third party now- and the girls are only a few years off from the age they allow dogs to go to- its ridiculous its gotten this far.

Questions for the "wicked witches:"

What's a small dog by definition? Is this written somewhere?

What's a dog's size have to do with placement?

Since when are 11 and 12 year olds children?

How stupid are these women to think Ellen would not use her TV show to inform the public about what they did?

How stupid are these women to think this incident would leave a favorable opinion with the public?

How stupid are these women to get the police involved as well as their attorney?

I have to weigh in here.... this has happened to me (kind of)

Shortly after my son got married and their daughter was born, they decided to get a dog. Mind you the baby is only 4 months old here, and neither one of them had a clue what they were doing. So.... off they go to the rescue agency to get a dog. They found a dog they really liked, his name was Jake and he was a McNabb/Queensland mix, about a 70-80 pound dog. Wellllll, according to the rescue folks, poor Jake just couldn't be adopted without Mirissa.... a 100-110 pound Rottie. Mind you these young adults live in about a 1000 sq. ft. house and have a 4 month old. Soooooo, here they come home (they lived next door to me), with these 2 dogs. I about fell off my chair. Within a week, the dil is having fits. She has to feed them and take care of them, etc. etc. and she doesn't know how. My son got deployed with the 9/11 disaster and was away from home for who knows how long. Soooo, dear old mom has to step in. I ended up trading Jake to my sister for a small terrier/Westie mix, thinking that would be easier for the dil. My sister had 3 acres, and several other dogs, so Jake wasn't alone. Then I took the Rottie and renamed her Missa. I also already had two other dogs so, I think for a bit Missa did miss Jake, but both dogs adapted very well and Jake really loved my sister's ranch (still does).

About a month after my sister had taken Jake, here come the rescue lady to see the dogs. I chased her off my property! I was mad a ***:banghead:

She tried to give me a song and dance about what could and could not be done with the dogs and I gave her an earful right back. If you want to retain control over the dogs, don't give them away. She was a tad heartbroken that the Rottie acted like she had never seen her before. AND then I gave her a ration for being so stupid as to give 2 very large dogs to a young couple with no brains and brand new baby:laugh:

We never heard from her again, although she did threaten to get an attorney after the kids. I was so upset with her by then I just told her to bring it on. Of course I was sorry I said that after she went away and I had calmed down. I worried for about two months that she might try to take my Rottie back, but we never heard from her again:) She could't get to Jake because my sister lives a few states away.

Anyway, we still have both dogs. Both dogs are very happy and they visit each other occasionally.

I feel bad for Ellen and the little girl. I would strongly encourage a boycott of the rescue organization. While I really appreciate that they will take the dog back if it doesn't work out, I have to agree with SadieMae. If you find them a loving home, they should be allowed to remain there because Lord knows, there are plenty of homeless animals that need rescuing.

leave Ellen alone:mad:

jmo

Oh I so agree.. I like Ellen and I find she did NOTHING wrong. She apparently knows her hairdresser, after all, only your hairdress knows for sure.. hehe.. ok, seriously, I think Ellen did the right thing. At least the dog isn't in the pound or who knows where this dog will end up. Good grief, can't a famous person ever have a life without all this petty nonsense..

  • #138
I swear I must be reading the facts about this all wrong.
I simply don't understand why the dog can't stay with the people she was given too. Didn't Miss Uppity realize that removing the doggie from a loving home was harmful? She doesn't have the dog's best interest at heart....

And there you have it, Pilamena..... I think all she really cared about was being able to say she placed a dog in a "Hollywood" home. Maybe she thought it would become a movie star.....

SeriouslySearching,
You made me laugh because I couldn't understand why the adoption lady being lesbian had anything to do with this BUT I remembered Ellen is gay. What if the adoption gal is trying to be the tough chic and teach Ellen a lesson for some unknown reason? She definitely is one nasty angry person. I'd never adopt an animal from someone like her, she's too angry. Hope she looses lots of business.

This may be a bit of an understatement, but I think the woman from the rescue center is going to be very sorry she tangled with Ellen.
