I have to weigh in here.... this has happened to me (kind of)
Shortly after my son got married and their daughter was born, they decided to get a dog. Mind you the baby is only 4 months old here, and neither one of them had a clue what they were doing. So.... off they go to the rescue agency to get a dog. They found a dog they really liked, his name was Jake and he was a McNabb/Queensland mix, about a 70-80 pound dog. Wellllll, according to the rescue folks, poor Jake just couldn't be adopted without Mirissa.... a 100-110 pound Rottie. Mind you these young adults live in about a 1000 sq. ft. house and have a 4 month old. Soooooo, here they come home (they lived next door to me), with these 2 dogs. I about fell off my chair. Within a week, the dil is having fits. She has to feed them and take care of them, etc. etc. and she doesn't know how. My son got deployed with the 9/11 disaster and was away from home for who knows how long. Soooo, dear old mom has to step in. I ended up trading Jake to my sister for a small terrier/Westie mix, thinking that would be easier for the dil. My sister had 3 acres, and several other dogs, so Jake wasn't alone. Then I took the Rottie and renamed her Missa. I also already had two other dogs so, I think for a bit Missa did miss Jake, but both dogs adapted very well and Jake really loved my sister's ranch (still does).
About a month after my sister had taken Jake, here come the rescue lady to see the dogs. I chased her off my property! I was mad a ***:banghead:
She tried to give me a song and dance about what could and could not be done with the dogs and I gave her an earful right back.
If you want to retain control over the dogs, don't give them away. She was a tad heartbroken that the Rottie acted like she had never seen her before. AND then I gave her a ration for being so stupid as to give 2 very large dogs to a young couple with no brains and brand new baby:laugh:
We never heard from her again, although she did threaten to get an attorney after the kids. I was so upset with her by then I just told her to bring it on. Of course I was sorry I said that after she went away and I had calmed down. I worried for about two months that she might try to take my Rottie back, but we never heard from her again

She could't get to Jake because my sister lives a few states away.
Anyway, we still have both dogs. Both dogs are very happy and they visit each other occasionally.
I feel bad for Ellen and the little girl. I would strongly encourage a boycott of the rescue organization. While I really appreciate that they will take the dog back if it doesn't work out, I have to agree with SadieMae. If you find them a loving home, they should be allowed to remain there because Lord knows, there are plenty of homeless animals that need rescuing.
