Hello friend...Im not sure if anybody else is really interested but its really big news down here.....horses arent even allowed to be ridden and horse floats are not allowed on our roads.......they are telling us that it cant be transferred to humans :waitasec: ..lets hope not.

I'm sorry to hear about the sick horses in Australia but relieved to see that they don't think it will infect humans.

In this part of the US, we have problems with Equine Encephalitis which is mosquito born and can infect humans and birds as well:

Following this thread with great interest. One of the links said that it appeared that only Randwick ?, had the infected horses - at that moment in time.

Scary business viruses today. Have any of the horses died from this OR how does this virus affect the animals?

In my younger years I spent many, many days at the horse track. My brother had a race horse too. It was cared for better than a loved child.

Hi Camper ....I dont know of any horse deaths yet but I do know that the racing industry is in tormoil....this flu has bought the horse world here to its knees....even circuses that have ponies as part of their act are grounded

Curious - why do you think it's cruel. I wouldn't equate it with dog fighting in the least. Seems like the horses who race are very well taken care of and lead a life better than many of us - just wondering why you think it's cruel!??

Would you like getting belted the way they do? to race quicker, like on their rumps and necks..like they ain't doing the best they can lol

Also, they spend most of their lives in stables...I dunno, doesn't seem much of a life that of a racehorse

It is difficult to find any part of life that is without cruelty. People and their journey through life, create cruelty and suffer from it as well.

Animals of all sorts often are left to find food and comfot on their own, Lions, Tigers and all types of animals eat one another for their food and comfort. Wild horses are another topic.

Would not any human being love running freely, but food and comfort are a concern for all of Gods creatures.

Fast horses and fast human beings seem to have a ready supply of food and comfort. Horses have owners who care for their every need, food, medical care, comfort. Fast humans (the Trumps etc, have butlers and maids.) Wonder IF Trump has ever been grocery shopping?

I love horses, but they scare me to death. I never hang around with any large animal that is bigger than me.

Dingo, I noted in one of the links that the community was catering the folks who had horses that had been required to stay put, away from their homes etc. How does that work, goodness so many many people with horses being affected, how does the catering work?

Ours don't run away, they think I may have some grain or horse cookies and crowd around. It can be scary, but all our horses know exactly who is head horse! They all know I'm alpha horse from birth, LOL

I do not think racing cruel. If you know about horses, any kind of pressure on the rear is to drive a horse forward. Heel pressure while in a saddle directs a horse to the left or right. I use a little hand pressure on top of the withers to slow a gait. There are all sorts of things you learn in working with horses.

Hi Camper....the catering being done for the people stranded away from their homes would include cooking and maybe washing.....horse food being provided and anything else that needed doing for them.

Told the BarnGod about this and he heard it on our local radio station on the farm news. Wow! It's important for us to know or the local farm news wouldn't carry it here in Kansas/Colorado.

Thanks Dingo. It would be a panic here. It basically was for us with West Nile Virus. We were at a draft horse event north of us a few years ago when a horse came down with West Nile. We saw the horse and the owners quickly transported him home to die. Of course we immediately got our horses in the trailer and left. That horse's home was near a river with mosquitos. Fortunately our area was dry and we rarely had a mosquito problem. We've been fortunate.

Hopefully your virus will be identified and contained quickly.

I know about horses also BG- whipping the crap out of them is not quite the same as directing a horse with 'heel pressure' or a 'little hand pressure'.
