Family, under pressure, removes its hanged dummy

i'm sorry -- i was speaking more in general terms and not you personally. there are many many people that say the same things about White Entertainment Television and white only scholarships - i've seen it on these boards before. and i have heard people be offended by them, though i don't really understand why.

Perhaps because there are those times when whites have been passed over for job promotions, scholarships, etc. because the company needed to meet a quota. That sort of thing can make someone who wasn't a racist become a little bit bitter.

We've never distinguished between race with my son. My hubby's friend is white and married to a beautiful black woman and they have 3 mixed race children. They were all over playing with my son and he told me later that he really liked the "chocolate kids".

Thats cute. My mom and my sisters are all white and my mom always has my kids when I work. When my son was about 4 my sister asked him, what race he was and he said he was white. They said no you are Mexican and he had a fit saying that no he was white. Then when I was pregnant with our daughter he was 5 he said he was scared the baby would be black. OMG, we just couldn't stop laughing at him. My DH said we may have a problem if the baby is anything but Hispanic. He has finally come to terms with the fact that he is Mexican, LOL. :)

I couldnt' get financial aid because my father "made too much money". They didn't take into account the fact that he also had 6 kids and my Mom stayed home. My counselor was trying to help me and she actually told me I wouldn't have a problem if I was a minority. That's more along the lines of what I was referring to.

My mom was friends with a lady who was Puerto Rican. I remember her coming home one day very upset because the woman was bragging to my mom about how her children will go to school for free because of her race because apparently the state or the federal government was going to pay for it. I've never heard of this funding before, but my mom was clearly upset because she had three boys of her own (including me) who she wanted to attend college. I graduated 5 years ago. Even with all of the small scholarships and financial aid I received I will be paying off this loan for years to come. At least another decade.

I don't think this caused my mom to become racist but it certainly hurt her and caused alot of resentment.

Check this out. By the way, H. Clinton wants something similar:

There's a new bill being considered in the California Assembly that would allow illegal immigrant students to receive financial aid in the UC system and state campuses. It's a proposal that infuriates some college students who are U.S. citizens.

There's over a billion dollars available in state financial aid. And with college so expensive, competition is stiff. An emotional debate is sure to take place here next month, when lawmaker decide whether to extend state financial aid to illegal immigrants.

Personally I have a HUGE problem with that. It's ridiculous that illegal immigrants are granted rights like that when citizen's who pay taxes cannot get the aid themselves. I don't have a problem with legal immigrants or people who are following the proper channels, it just rubs me the wrong way with illegal immigrants being granted such things without paying taxes.

I don't even know how this girl is going to school. I know a lot of Mexican people who are legal and illegal here. My friends sis had to quit college because she didn't have proper documentation. She has been here since she was 5. She doesn't know anything else. Her older sister and brother were born in California. She was the only one who was not legal. Some have been here since they were small children and that is why the Dream Act is trying to be passed. It would allow children who were brought here illegally to become legal and go to college or join the Army. Most find that when they are done with HS they cannot go to college because lack of documentation. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois is one of the heads of this Act. The only reason I can think of why this bill is being looked at is because congress did not pass anything on the whole immigration thing which would have allowed a way for these students to become legal. Thinking that they can possibly send all these people back or make them go back is not plausible. It will never work. People call it amnesty but when they have to pay huge fines it really isn't. I don't think they should get aide because they are illegal but I do think they should be eligible for scholarships if their grades are really good and they have the potential to be something great. Senetor Durbin said their potential is being squandered when the U.S. could really use it right now.

I completely understand and I agree with you to a certain degree. While its obviously not their fault that they're here illegally (or that their parents are illegal), the fact remains that AMERICAN students should have first crack at the monies available from these scholarships. I'm in agreement that an educated immigrant is far more valuable to America than an uneducated immigrant, but American children should have first crack at any available funding from our government.

I see your point but I think there should be special steps for them to become legal before the assistance is offered.

Absolutely, though I have new mexican family, just found and met my 28 year old half sister, half american half mexican, I believe legal americans should be taken care of by our country and citizens first. If anyone is illegal, they shouldn't be given anything but the door to legality. Just like the door would be shown to me whether it be a door of a ajil cell, class room, church, home, immigration office, border fence, the visionary door to moral, ethical, legal and spiritual law.

I see your point but I think there should be special steps for them to become legal before the assistance is offered.
Great comment.

I don't buy this argument at all. You could say the same thing about women or people use their connections to get into schools or obtain jobs.

Yes there should. I don't think saying here your illegal have a hand out is a good message at all. There are definitely steps. It took my friends sister three years to become legal and huge lawyer fees and not to mention all the tickets for driving with no license because she couldn't get one. As far as the church helping people. They have said they will not stop helping illegal immigrants as a law has passed preventing them from doing so. The Catholic church said they will have to arrest their nuns because God's law supercedes man's law and they will help people with food, shelter, spirtually and any other way. They don't care and neither does God. I think it is a mix between human rights and law. It is so complicated and messy, I fear their will never be an end and it will keep escelating. A Mayor in Pennsylvania passed a law that fines any landlord who rents to an illegal because he doesn't want them in his town. How is this not going to promote racial tension and racism against Hispanic people. Anyway, sorry off the subject at hand.

Women are still making less money for the same job that men get.
