The gofundme statement by the mother has changed. It originally said they were looking for donations to transfer her. Now it says:

All donations will go torwards the fight to keep her on life support.

Exactly what does that mean? They have insurance, which right now is covering the child. The attorney is working for free, at least, right now.

I just got back from a visit to friends and family for the holidays and have spent hours reading most of the posts. I finally skipped to the last couple of pages, hoping and praying that Jahi had passed.

While I still feel awful for the family, I have to wonder about that proposed surgery. The hospital is saying it is unethical for them to operate on someone who is deceased. I'm sure there is much more behind that statement.

IMHO, imposing additional surgeries on her is cruel at this point. I have to wonder if she would survive those surgeries, even with the ventilator artificially making her appear to be alive. Were the hospital sanction this extraordinary move, they would be placing themselves at tremendous additional risk. You know the family and their attorney would again blame the hospital for her "death" after the surgeries.

Unfortunately, we will never hear the hospital's side of the story until the inevitable law suit takes place. IMHO, it will be an ugly trial.

I constantly pray that Jahi's mother will come to terms with her death and let her rest in peace without further insult to her mortal remains.

As Seattle Chiquita stated way back, this is turning into a horror story. Let me add the term macabre.

Following this case has been very educational. I for one didn't really fully understand the difference between brain death and a vegetative state (never really researched it).

I am guessing many other lay people have learned a lot from this case too. I used to think it was a very gray sort of line between the two (vegetative vs. brain dead, I guess because I thought of it from the perspective of the person experiencing it) but having learned that brain death means the body actually starts to decompose makes the difference EXTREMELY clear!

I did understand the medical difference. Personally, I don't consider either one to be truly living....I would want to continue in either condition. But that's just my opinion.

Snipped....

The hospital can require a doctor to perform a surgery. Doctors have the final say - not a hospital - and I have not heard of any doctor who is willing to do surgery on this child.

If she is breathing on her own, they could turn the ventillator off and she shouldn't die.
But family doesn't want the ventillator turned off.

You missed the point. Attempting to breath on her own... as described by the family....if true doesn't match the brain death conclusion.

IMO the parents are misinterpreting the data or they have no understanding of what it is they're looking at and coming to that conclusion. I must ask myself, why is that? Why are they looking at a piece of equipment and drawing that conclusion?

:dunno: I hate to sound harsh, but at this point it seems to me this has become all about money. :twocents:

Are we sure about that? I have read several times now that insurance does NOT cover the deceased and that the hospital has to cover the costs.

As far as the statement any funds will "go towards the fight" might mean food or large screen TVs or buying vehicles that help the family continue the fight or comfort them if the fight is lost. JMO.

I haven't missed any points. If the family actually believes she is breathing on her own, then why are they concerned about ventillator being turned off?
She shouldn't die if she is breathing on her own after the ventillator is turned off.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I thought one of the test involved shutting off the vent.....And it was my understanding she wasnt breathing on her own.....This is hitting very close to home for me, my father was in a persistive vegatative state , he was breathing on his own, had a feeding tube, and had to be suctioned because he could not swallow. We had a DNR order in place and he died of respiratory failure....I cannot tell you the horror of watching him in that state, everything was taken from him, including his dignity......
That is existing not living......She is gone, let her go.......

I swear, just when I think I've seen it all, I see something else. A person commented on the "Keep Jahi Mcmath on life support" FB page, that they need to get the President involved.

Do you recall that Bush got involved with Terry Schiavo? However, she was not declared to be brain dead. Somehow I don't think Obama will go there.

Because it's not all or nothing. People who are not brain dead can be on a ventilator and attempt to breath on their own once in awhile, and gradually more and more. They're given the opportunity to gradually wean off.
The family never said she could breath without the vent. They said she attempts to once in awhile.

Exactly!

You are suppose to be preoccupied with the dog and pony show, stop paying attention. j/k

Just for the record. I do believe she's brain dead.
I'm simply trying to understand her families point of view. I want to know where the failure is. Who told them when they look at the machine and it does this certain thing, it means she's trying to breath?

My goodness this has become quite the circus! Can't the hospital just send her home and loan them some equipment for a while? They can have prayer circles etc....

Course I am thinking the equipment is really expensive and they won't get it back in working order but it still might be better in the long run. The grandma is a nurse, she can manage things.

I don't think anyone told them she was trying to breathe. This is something they think.

Someone many pages back explained that condensation in the mouthpiece is common and family witnessing it frequently think that means the person is trying to breathe (it stops the respirator for a breath etc....).
