But the hospital HAS discussed details. They publicly disclosed several procedures that were performed and it was more than a tonsillectomy.

And apparently the complications are unusual for a tonsillectomy according to the physician quoted in this article. The bleeding began after Jahi arrived at the ICU and I have to wonder if the ICU nursing staff were aware of the other surgical procedures performed in addition to the tonsillectomy.

Thebner says complications can arise during a tonsillectomy because the affected area has a lot of blood vessels.

"Anytime you go into surgery, it is unusual to have these complications, but they are real despite the fact that they are low risk," she said. "This was a highly unusual complication."

Back in the intensive care unit, Jahi quickly took a turn for the worse.

Are you serious? Of course the ICU staff knew. Why else would she be in ICU? She wouldn't be in there for a routine tonsillectomy.

The hospital made it clear that the general nature of the procedures was the most they felt they could comfortably share. I'm sure they consulted with their legal staff before doing so. Idk who the quoted doc is or how familiar he was with the totality of the circumstances, but it wasn't just a tonsillectomy so what he said is irrelevant. Especially if he's referring to statistics for the general population of pediatric tonsillectomies rather than higher risk patients like this child.

Okay these people are crossing a line, I was bothered by them asking for donations and bei
ng somewhat evasive as to why, but staging a protest at a hospital and posting names and phone no.online is absurd...How far are they willing to go and when will it end....I sincerely hope the judge put an end to this entire horror show

If Jahi started bleeding profusely because of trauma, the suctioning didn't cause the trauma.

Incorrect- the suctioning WAS the trauma.

I wondered what happened to the lawyer appealing? I thought I read some days ago that he would appeal the decision for 5:00 tomorrow. :waitasec: I've seen no new reports of any appeal.

So assuming they failed her, will that raise the dead? Because don't see the dead being reanimated whether or not a surgeon messed up.

Do you jbjjm54?

Dead being reanimated, what does that mean? I have worked as a health care provider for many years so I understand the meaning of brain death. I also know mistakes are made everyday in hospitals because of human error. So please don't talk down to someone you don't know anything about.
I'm trying to empathize with this mother and I hope and pray I will never be placed in a tragic situation as this.
With the exception of people who have had to witness a loved one linger in a vegetative state, no one knows what they will do until faced with a similar situation.
To answer your question, nothing is going to change the condition of Jahi McMath regardless of whether she received stellar medical care or she did not.
My prayer for this mother is that the same faith pushing her to do all see can for her daughter will be the same faith to carry her through the days and months ahead if she does not receive the miracle she so desperately wants for her daughter.

Yes, the grandmother appears to be firmly standing by the family.

Even though it has been stated that she is a nurse, there is no telling what kind of patients that she has worked with in her career. I would certainly think that she would know that Jahi's brain is decomposing, among other things, but for whatever reasons (religious, respecting her daughters wishes, etc.) she is standing with the families decision.

On the morning of Monday, December 9, Nailah and her mother, Sandy Chatman, took Jahi to Oakland Children's Hospital. Chatman, Jahi's grandmother, is a nurse in Kaiser Oakland's Surgery Department with more than 30 years of experience in the medical field. On that day, she took an active role in watching her granddaughter's progress.

not details which would be covered under HIPAA (her medical record)

Jahi's family discussing the case allows for the facility/CHO to comment on the family's disclosure of info . . . such as it NOT being a routine surgery

These are very specific details that are covered under HIPAA and they've been disclosed to the Court so that the media could report it. The Hospital is doing some serious spinning about this case because somebody seriously f'up, imo.

I think neither the family--nor the ICU nurses-- were aware of the other surgical procedures performed.

The hospital's court filing described Jahi's operation as a "complicated surgical procedure" that included an adenotonsillectomy, a separate procedure to remove throat tissue and a third procedure to remove excess nose tissue. But it did not outline exactly what happened afterward, saying only that she "suffered serious complications resulting in a tragic outcome - her death."

Incorrect- the suctioning WAS the trauma.

The bleeding started BEFORE the family did any suctioning. They said they were kept from seeing her for more than 30 minutes and she was bleeding when they entered her ICU room. Therefore, it is impossible that suctioning by the family was the cause of the bleeding.

Why wouldn't the ICU nurses be aware of what their patients are there for?

No medical center lined up for Jahi McMath's body

Hospital officials said they have had no contact from anyone offering to take the girl...

"We have been waiting since Friday, Dec. 27 - when we were first told by the family lawyer of a potential facility that might accept the body of Jahi - for a call from a physician to discuss with our medical staff what may be necessary to transfer the deceased," the hospital said in a statement Sunday afternoon. "Our physicians have yet to receive a single call or message from the (New York) facility under consideration."

... with regard to supporting the family:

"We continue to do so despite their lawyer's criticizing the very hospital that all along has been working hard to be accommodating to this grieving family."

BBM. From my own experience, I also know that hospitals don't disclose the error and the human who made it moves on to work at another facility and the damage due to "errors" continues...

No. Not a routine surgery.
Bumping my previous post.

Regarding the specific procedures undergone by Jiha McMath.

http://www.docstoc.com/docs/165734995/jahi1

"Ms. McMath was admitted to Children's Hospital on December 9, 2013, for a complicated surgical procedure consisting of an adenotonsillectomy, uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, and submucous resection of bilateral inferior turbinates."
Thank you for reposting this!

Given that she was *scheduled* to be sent to the ICU after the surgery, which is not typical nor routine, I find it hard to believe that the risks were glossed over.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the family were the ones pushing for this surgery and may have very well been advised that doing that much surgery in the head/neck was extremely dangerous.
I would not be surprised to hear doctors recommended breaking the surgeries up and performing (some) at a later date.
I also believe that her being obese would factor into the idea of not doing all three at once.
When it all comes out I believe it will be crystal clear.

I meant to quote the comment about President Obama.
I would like to know what his opinion is. His daughters are about the same age, but I don't think he will being saying anything other than offering his codolences.

I wondered about the EEG's, and so plainly stated in the document just linked, it says that two were performed with zero activity.

Breaks my heart this family is having issues letting go.

Well, apparently, the mother hasn't worked in over a month (her choice) so I guess it would go to supporting her and the family while the fight continues. I don't really think it's going to go to the patient.

Mother may covered by California's Paid Family Leave.

Not exactly... this was part of the submissions to the court and was released by the court not the hospital.

The hospital is the source. The doctor also told the news media it was a "complicated" procedure. Such details of a patient's medical record are covered by federal law. It's a tad disingenuous to claim the federal law prevents the hospital from saying anything when they've been spinning away.
