As a person with a life-long anxiety disorder, I grew up worrying about every issue and thinking through worse-case scenarios. The one positive outcome of my situation is that when emergencies do occur, I am the go-to person as to what-to-do. I think clearly of the options and make quick decisions. As a result, I got my sister to the hospital in time for treatment of a severe kidney infection, I knew the moment my husband's bronchitis turned to pneumonia an got him to the hospital ASAP. I also was one of the few adults who managed to keep track of my students during a day-long bomb situation which included evacuation and relocation for half a day. See, I foresaw the situation and had roster check-lists in my ever-present grade book and checked at every move. I was the only one in the family who didn't panic when my niece's de-clawed cat fell into a basement wall and couldn't get himself out. I considered the location of electrical wires, drains, etc. and chose a section of wall I deemed safe and instructed my DH to make a hole in a specific case. Cat rescued, minimal damage.

I only fall apart and have a real good panic attack when it is all over. LOL!

I need this background for you to understand where I'm coming from concerning this comment and also include for everything posted below the following: IJHO, JMHO, :moo::moo::moo:. While it is not a likely long-term of this particular situation, it is a logical one IMHO, JMHO, :moo::moo::moo:.

Should Jahi's family be given everything they want and laws fall state-by-state concerning individuals who are declared brain dead by 3 doctors or more, we could be in for a new nightmare scenario as suggested by Robin Cook's medical novel, Coma.

I see facilities lined with beds containing the brain dead. I envision row upon row of ventilators, feeding tubes, every medication and nutrient feeding the "patients". Legions of nurses, CNA's, LVN's, registered nurses, doctors, and surgeons tend to every medical necessity to keep the "patients" at their peak performance until the inevitable happens. The bed is not empty for long, there is another "patient" on the waiting list.

All of this at a tremendous cost to our society, morally, emotionally, and emotionally.

Is this what they want?

thanks was not enough. i am the same way and had the same vision. thank you for writing it so clearly. it scares the heck out of me!

This is a real ethical dilemma on top of the fact that Jahi McMath is under the age of 18. I would think it would be the parents who would have control since she is a minor. This is biggest since Terri Schiavo in 2005.

I don't. As insurance doesn't pay any charges after brain death is written in the chart, there will be no funding for facilities like you describe. Insurance also means Medicare, Medicaid, Medical.

If you have the means, you may be able to pay to have 24/7 nursing and physician care independently of any licensed facility. However, I think the pool of licensed caregivers who will do routine medical care on brain dead people will be very small.

I have a question about this.

Jahi's medical record should reflect that she was pronounced dead on the 12th after the second physician examined her, unless they change that to reflect when Dr. Fisher did his exam. So, she technically is now the responsibility of the coroner, despite the courts ordering CHO to continue her treatment. The courts confirmed she is legally brain dead.

So, do they really need physician orders from "CHO" for her transfer?

Unsure, but if it did happen it would be historical! I don't think this has ever happened before. If the coroner were responsible, I would think he/she would have already taken possession of Jahi's body if the court were not involved.

Like I said earlier I think this case is historical. If nothing else Jahi has made us think very deeply in areas most never believed they would have to.

When my grandmother was in the same hospice unit that my mother worked on...there was a very large family there. They set up 'residence' there...they took over the kitchen that was provided for families, they took over one entire waiting room with blankets, toys, etc.
They took over the courtyard to have a bbq with no less than 45 people there. They even tried getting my younger daughter to join them.

One of the nurses had to have a conference with the family that they were, in fact, interfering with the other patients and the peace and quiet that hospice provides.

I just picture this in my head with this girls family.

http://www.terrisfight.org/about-terri-s-network/

I went to the site above, nowhere on the site is Terri Shavio's autopsy mentioned which stated she suffered massive, irreversable brain damage and was blind...There was no therapy that would help....She was not brain dead.......

BBM
If I remember correctly the family refused to believe what the autopsy said, insisting she could hear and see imo because it said what the husband/exhusband had been saying for a very long time.

These must be new conditions considering they've already had conditions in place for a week or so now.

I kinda sorta in a way think it very well might be written by someone that might know.
Really can you imagine going home after this circus at the hospital and having to decompress from that?
And, it could be a housekeeping staff, a unit secretary, or a nurse. Or heck..it could be a family member.

If it was a hospital staff member, they should be F.I.R.E.D. Absolutely no call for a statement like that to be posted.
