I have not followed this case in depth and did not know the current status til I read this post.

Question: is the mother's position based on religious beliefs at all?

I think there are religious beliefs involved, and others are certainly using the situation as a platform for religious agendas, but I think the most likely explanation is that the mother is in deep, deep denial and probably cannot see a way to back out of it now.

I believe others involved in the situation are motivated purely by money.

I have mixed feeling about this. Several years ago my 10 year old son was in a horrible accident. About a week after the accident we were informed that he was completely brain dead and we should consider taking him off of life support. We were crushed and decided we would give him some more time before considering this. Several MRIs and other tests later, we were told that there was no improvement and absolutely no hope. This was my baby and I just didnt believe there was no hope and told them that I would not take him off of life support just yet. Several months later my son opened his eyes and was taken off the the vent and was breathing on his own. The Drs told us he would be a vegetable for the rest of his life, that his brain was to badly injured. He continued to make improvements that the Drs. couldnt explain. A year and a half later we took him home in a wheelchair. He has since walked across the stage at his high school graduation, has a job and is living independently. I understand that this is a different type of brain injury, but it is so easy to say "if this was my child I would do this or that". We never really know what we will do until we are put in that particular situation.

Portion of a new admin entry on "Keep Jahi McMath on Life Support" FB.

Jahi should be graduating from the 8th grade this month but it may not be possible for her to make it to the ceremony, as she is fighting to recover. Please take a minute of your time to call the school and let them know we want them to acknowledge Jahi McMath at the 8th grade graduation ceremony, she deserves to receive the graduation certificate as she has completed most of the 8th grade work.

Bold emphasis by me.

Of all the things to be worrying about...

Who writes the updates? It's written like it was considered a possibility (even if remote) that Jahi might attend a graduation ceremony.

Can't believe she is still going. I am flabbergasted. Obviously she has not improved any or we would be seeing videos of it. JMOO

Note that the admin poster of this FB entry is urging the "public" to bombard the school phone lines. Where have we heard THAT before?

I watched the site for a little while, and saw a number of comments immediately pulled down if they asked for more updates on Jahi's condition, video or photos, or were critical of the impact of asking for people to bombard the phone lines at the school. Pretty aggressive editing-- within less than 5 min the critical comments "poofed." And they were all very polite posts, IMO!

Anyway, I agree with Donjeta that it is odd that this is apparently high on the list of priorities.

On another note, does anyone have access to the print copy of the July issue of Essence? I'm curious as to the content of the rest of the article interviewing Nailah Winkfield.

It implied that there was just not enough time for her full recovery YET...

It would make for great feel-good propaganda articles for Byrne & co. Look at Jahi McMath, she was pronounced brain dead and now she's graduated from eight grade. (She's still brain dead but we won't mention that here.)

She is legally dead. There is no hope whatsoever for improvement, and never was.

Jahi McMath: Family pushing school to grant brain-dead teen's diploma

By Karina Ioffee

Bay Area News Group

OAKLAND--The family of Jahi McMath, the Oakland girl declared brain-dead after a complex tonsil surgery last December, is pushing her school to grant her an honorary diploma, the family said Tuesday.

McMath, 13, was a eighth-grader at E.C. Reems Academy of Technology and Arts when she was taken to UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital for a complex trio of surgeries to help her deal with sleep apnea, weight gain and other health problems. She had attended the school since kindergarten...

It's not totally unheard of for institutions to grant posthumous degrees, and I can see a school doing it for a student who has completed all but one semester, but it should totally be up to the school's discretion to do so, and in this case one really has to wonder about the motivation behind the request. I am sure the family is thinking that the more degrees, certificates and honors Jahi can rack up, the harder it will be for people to categorize her deceased. I'm with Donjeta - - you would think the family would have more important matters to concern themselves with. Not to mention the fact that the faculty and administration have supported them 100% in this tragedy, and now they want to bring scrutiny, harassment and criticism upon the school? That just rubs me the wrong way (as have so many other things about this case!).

Eta: Perhaps the school could specifically offer to grant her a "posthumous degree" rather than a regular degree. I'm guessing the family would refuse to accept it.

She is 'doing well' ?

If she is truly responding to voice commands, couldn't they post a video?

Hi Donjeta, It's a wonder they didn't try taking her. By my figures she only had about three full months of 8th grade. They are so built up in their minds Jahi is alive, they will never break down.

P.S. Adji is still in my prayers. Bless him little sweetie.:seeya:

Hi Marg, I agree. If she showed any response to commands we'd see it on the front page of our newspapers. Do they tell people the poor child has passed the lining of her gut? They can read about it in Nursing Directors report. That was way back in Jan. or Feb..I cant imagine what else she has passed as things liquify in time. Even with IV's etc. things will pass. I wonder (you do too) why they never show a picture of her. If she is showing signs of progress they should be happy to post one. :seeya:

^ Well you're speechless and I'm pizzed quite frankly.

I have kept pretty quiet on this, for the most part, and have felt sincere sadness for Jahi's mother (and family) but this is beginning to look quite different to me.

I don't quite know how to describe my feelings other than to say it just looks like the rules do not apply to them- and that would be fine if they weren't trying to engender financial help and sympathy... and sympathy is not quite the right word.

From the beginning I have believed wholeheartedly that because Nylah pushed this surgery, and although Jahi was afraid, insisted that Jahi would be fine (even if that's what she believes she was told) that this was the reason she could not accept the outcome. Who wouldn't feel horrified and guilty but this is going way too far.

NW doesn't give a damn what all the many specialist say, or what was confirmed, or by how many people. Damn CHO, damn the doctors, damn the nurses, damn anyone who won't agree with her.

There are a lot of parents (I know one personally) that agree to a surgery and most certainly assure their child or baby they will be fine- and they aren't... it doesn't turn out that way. Parents who cajole their children to go somewhere or drive somewhere and their child ends up in a horrible accident- and dead. I know someone who just last year, around this time had a child die in a terrible car crash (Ferrari in the bay area- exploded and burned up) where she insisted that her boy go with her husband (he was actually her nephew but she and her husband were raising him). SHE was supposed to have gone on the day drive to a Ferrari event with her hubby but didn't want him playing computer games all day- and made. him. go. instead!

It happens.

It is terrible.

Terrible things happen.

The public at large is expected to accept the vague updates with no proof. If you weren't asking for help or blaming other people or entities- fine. It is your story, your delusion. That isn't the case here.

What will be the ramifications for this school or any other to be pushed, forced or sued to graduate a student who did not complete the requirements to graduate? What is going on here?

This feels so manipulative... almost entitled. Again, the rules don't apply to NW apparently (Jahi in reality).

All I know is that this situation is feeling more and more... sociopathic... no... narcissistic... something not right with each new scenario and statement.
