In the statement Cindy gave the SA it appeared, from what she said, that the red plaid blanket was missing or had been removed from the bin where it was usually located. (my interpretation)

I now am having trouble with the colored fibers that were stuck on the duct tape coming from the wtp blanket. In reviewing the pic from the ME report (pg 711/1405) it appears the wtp blanket is a "fleece" type with a fairly thick pile. Most of the fleece type blankets that we own that look like this are polyester (not cotton). I am now thinking the colored fibers stuck on the duct tape from the scene are from Caylee's (and/or kc's) clothing.

I noticed that OSCO found and listed 'fiber mass found in lane 6' and 'material fibers found in lane 7'.

I was going over the list in the FBI Lab Hair link (Off. Docs. post 339) of stuff they received from OSCO and the above fiber evidence is listed along with a rug found in lane 7.

Also many misc. pieces of fabric (but with no further descriptions) are listed. Some line items listed id the color - 'grey cloth 2 pcs lane 4', where other lines items are simply listed - 'plastic & cloth lane 4'.

Black wool only on the duct tape.

In fact, that is the only evidence of any wool fibers that I am aware of.

Is it possible the black wool fibers came from the carpet in the car? Wool and another fiber.

I don't know what kind of carpet is used in a Sunfire and I haven't been able to find out. Just a thought...maybe the pieces of tape were cut and laid on the carpet before being place over the face. Therefore the fibers.



There are two types of carpet used in autos, loop carpet and cut pile carpet. Loop carpet is made via a machine that applies a coating to the back which locks the fiber and creates a fiber loop on the top. Cut pile is actually made with the same process except that the top loop is cut open.

There are a variety of carpet thicknesses, backings, and qualities for different vehicles. Of course the quality of the carpet is reflected in the cost. European autos more often use higher quality carpeting than their North American counterparts.

There is also a difference between domestic and import carpet. Domestic loop or cut pile carpet is usually made from nylon or acrylic fiber with fibers that are spaced wider than you would find in Import carpet. Import carpet is usually made from natural fibers such as wool with a nice heavy backing, tight short nap, and a much better quality overall. Import carpets tend to mat less, last longer, and offer better color choices.

Sparky, I don't know too much about any evidence collected in re. interior of the car carpet. I am positive all trunk fibers were ruled out. I'm can't even recall what color the interior carpet of the Sunfire is....:waitasec:

No, no, I think you might be on to something. If it was found ONLY on the duct tape, that has to mean something - could it have come from the car seat? From that missing blanket or something else wool? I feel like that could be a smoking gun if we could figure out where those fibers came from - I double wool was just out in the environment, floating in the water, and just happened to stick onto that duct tape.

I have seen murderers go down because of fiber matches to car interiors, rugs in the house, etc. So this could very well be important!

11 pieces of black mesh on page 340. Now, if this "mesh" is material as in fabric - cotton, wool etc or plastic (like to compare to landscape fabric a's used) it does not state.

I've been looking for any reference to wool content in landscape fabric. Although there is such a thing as wool landscape cloth, the common black stuff is made of polypropylene.

I was just thinking the duct tape is very sticky. In order to keep it from sticking to itself, I would attach it to something to keep it straight. I have done that before in the back of my Jeep.

If the carpet in the Sunfire is made of a wool blend, then I'd think that's where the wool fiber would've come from. Especially since they are both black. JMO

I've been looking for any reference to wool content in landscape fabric. Although there is such a thing as wool landscape cloth, the common black stuff is made of polypropylene.

Junkie here is gardener extraordinaire and has tried every landscape fabric invented and no - I have NEVER seen wool fibers in any. There is one with fiberglass. DuPont is the brand, I think. Some have burlap and nylons, but I have never seen wool. This is just from my extensive use of these material - not official.
