Tuesday, July 30th:
*Trial continues (Day 4) (@ 8:30am ET) – FL – Chad Amato (59) father, Margaret Ann (61) mother & Cody Winston (31) bro (Jan. 25, 2019, Choluota) - *Grant Tiernan Amato (29) arrested & charged (1/26/19) & arraigned (3/26/19) with 3 counts of 1st degree premeditated murder. Plead not guilty. Held without bond. $750K bond granted (4/25/19). DA will seek DP.
Trial started 7/23/19. Jury selection started 7/15/19 & ended 7/22/19. Jury is 8 women & 4 men. All 3 alternates are men.

7/23/19 Day 1: Opening statements by both sides. State witnesses: Chris Sisco (was Cody Amato's coworker at Orlando Regional Medical Center and called police to request a welfare check). SCSO Deputy Todd Moderson (who performed the well-being check). The State is now showing body cam footage from a Seminole County Sheriff Deputy when entering the Amato home and finding three dead bodies in the home. SCSO crime scene analyst Arthur Rubart. Trial continues on 7/24.
7/24/19 Day 2: State witnesses: Arthur Rubart (crime scene analyst for the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office) continues his testimony. Christine Snyder (crime scene supervisor for the Seminole County Sheriff's Office). Trial continues on 7/25.
7/25/19 Day 3: Jury was not in room for testimony by Jericho Fine (credit card was stolen) & Blake Turpin (gun was stolen) (friends of Amato's) were conducted. Judge will rule if testimony can be used after lunch. Jury is in court. State witnesses: FBI Agent George Rienerth (cell phone triangulation). Deputy Dan Anderson (Major Crimes Investigator (interviewed Amato before his arrest). Jurors watched Grant’s 4 hour interrogation with the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office. Judge will allow stolen gun from friend. Jury watched recorded conversation between Grant & his brother Jason at the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office (day after murders, but had not been arrested yet). Trial continues on 7/26.
7/26/19 Day 4: State witnesses: Troy Roberts (Public IT person). Jason Amato (brother). Arthur Rubart (crime scene analyst) back on stand. Christina Varnell (Jason's GF). Troy Roberts back on stand. Eric Brothers (Crime scene analyst). Janell Kennedy (security supervisor for the CVS facility where Chad Amato worked). Paul Schatz (Central Florida Expressway Authority employee). Seminole County Sheriff Investigator Daniel Anderson back on stand. Trial resumes Monday (7/29) at 8:30 a.m.
7/29/19 Day 5: State witnesses: Geraldine Blay (forensics investigator for the SCSO). Prosecutors playing videos and showing pictures found on flash drive . Nicholas Stewart (Seminole County Sheriff's Investigator with the Digital Forensic Unit). Geraldine Blay back on stand. Jericho Fine (best friends with Jason & Grant). Blake Turpin (best friends with Jason & Grant). Richard Ruth of FDLE at the Orlando Operation Center (Crime lab analyst firearms). Edgar Perez (DNA Crime Lab Analyst at Florida Department of Law Enforcement). Jennifer Sawyer (neighbor). Dr. Tera Jones (Medical examiner; Forensic Pathologist). Allison Laneve (Forensic Scientist & expert in Gun Shot Residue). State of Florida rests. Defense Attorney JP Gilbert is arguing the Defense Motion for Acquittal. Judge has denied the motion for acquittal.
Defense witnesses: Sloan Young (girlfriend of Cody). Nicholas Stewart. He was a witness for the state. He checked phone records and use of Chad Amato's cell phone, Digital forensics for the Seminole County Sheriff's Office. Geraldine Blay of the Sheriff's Office. Arthur Rubart (Crime Scene Tech). Rodney Funk (neighbor). Erika Johannson (works for a specialty pharmacy). Sam Coors (manager at Florida Pawn & Gun). Jason Amato (bro). Judge Recksiedler informs the jury that closing arguments should take place tomorrow and informs the jury tomorrow can be another long day. Court adjourned. Court will resume tomorrow morning at 8:30.
7/30/19 Day 6: Grant Amato is formally waiving his right to testify in front of judge outside the presence of the jury. Defense rests their case. Asked for another motion of acquittal. Judge denied it. Jury will be able to go home & get belongings for sequestration. Then closing statements will begin. Jury will be sequestered in hotel if they don’t reach a verdict today. Jury will be able to consider 2 lesser included offenses to the 3 counts of charged First-Degree Premeditated Murder including: -second degree murder; -manslaughter. Both sides have done closing arguments. State rebuttal. Jury instructions. Jury off to deliberate; started at 1:55pm ET. Verdict at about 10pm ET (deliberated for about 8 hours). GUILTY of First Degree Premeditated Murder of Cody Amato. GUILTY of First Degree Premeditated Murder of Chad Amato. GUILTY of First Degree Premeditated Murder of Margaret Amato. The penalty phase begins Aug. 12. He now faces the possibility of the death penalty. Death penalty decision must be unanimous by the jury. While jury was still deliberating defense files Notice of Intent to present expert testimony of mental mitigation in compliance with rule 3.202.2.

In a message to WESH reporter Dave McDaniel, Amato said he would not mind telling his story if he is able to bond out of jail.

“I just want to feel the sun again, feel the breeze on my skin ... feel the simple pleasures every innocent man feels,” Amato wrote.

Amato had previously asked McDaniel and WKMG reporter Vanessa Araiza if their stations could offer anything in return for an exclusive interview. He asked Archdeacon if he knew any millionaires who’d be willing to help him out.

“If you happen to know any... who would like to post my bond, I’d be eternally grateful and I’d give exclusive rights for you to my story,” he wrote in the May 11 message.

None of the reporters accepted Amato’s offer. Most news organizations have ethics guidelines forbidding financial incentives for exclusive interviews.

“They all remind me of the family that was taken from me and the brother I loved more than anything in this world,” he wrote.
