Steve Rosenthal escaped with his life when his condo building in Florida crumbled and left him homeless last month, but he still owes more than $100,000 on his mortgage.

Mr. Rosenthal (72) ..... soon received two small insurance checks for living expenses and personal property, but he was still waiting for his big payout. He expects it to be over six figures, but it will probably go to the bank to pay off the mortgage on a condo that no longer exists.

The Surfside collapse .... is causing new turmoil in Florida’s troubled insurance market

Days after the collapse, insurance companies sent letters threatening to cut off coverage to older buildings that did not pass mandatory safety inspections.

“It all comes down to profitability for the insurance companies,” Mr. Lopatin said. “And right now, writing business in Florida is not profitable.”

Hey everyone,

First time posting, but have been following along with this thread for a bit now. There were conversations about the security guard last week and I've been curious myself. After doing some searching, I found that there is a go fund me for the guard that was seemingly set up by a woman (friend of the woman?) she helped save - there are pictures of the two reuniting after the tragedy. Based on the pictures, the guard appears to have been injured. I know there was a news article where a resident refers to a male guard and on the 911 calls there's one made by a male security guard, so there must have been multiple employees there at the time. Hope we get to hear more from them and the sequence of events that night.

Condo collapse: All but 2 of the 97 victims found in the Surfside building collapse have been identified - CNN
All but 2 of the 97 victims found in the Surfside building collapse have been identified by authorities
Miami-Dade County said this week that, moving forward, it will only be reporting the number of victims who have been identified, "out of respect for the families who are still waiting and to ensure we are reporting the most accurate possible numbers."

Checking in on the live feed of the site, now we know what the sandbags were for...

and look at all those other lines.... we'll see later what they are doing. They indeed are marking each cap of the pilons as they go with orange cones. Leads me to believe they are monitoring and will get to the "bottom" of what is underneath and structures later on.

IIRC, President Biden said they would cover all costs for 30 days.. That will be up soon. Wonder if that 30 days will be extended to see if void of space underneath the garage floor (settling of sand under floor of garage that gives gap to fill)

FSU drone team assists in Surfside response operation - Florida State University News

"
Since arriving on the scene, the CDRP UAS team, working closely with other drone teams from state and local agencies, has flown more than 200 missions, captured more than 28,000 images of the site and created almost 700GB of data and information, including digital maps that could then be downloaded to the phone or tablet of a FEMA Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) program member.

This near real-time intelligence was intended to be a game-changer for hurricane response, but the Champlain Towers collapse provided a tragic test case for the new process.

The new development gives disaster response teams the ability to work off the latest data rather than being dependent on maps that are weeks or months old. This “disaster intelligence” can mean the difference between success and failure. "

I believe they help with the daily debriefing reports for those that are clearing out such as this one from 2 days ago. Note the circled areas etc on the map.

"Note the circled areas etc on the map." from your preceeding post@ DIXIE1035...
What stood out for me is how the concrete changes hue. Towards the south border of the image the foundation (?) changes to a dark green & darker brown. Columns (?) left-to- right #365, 364, 363.
If live streaming still available would someone renew the link. Thank you in advance.

Champlain Towers South

Is the original stream of the Youtube link on the channel (not live right now): Because Surfside

For an unknown reason, the live stream ended for BecauseSurfside, and the entire 24 previous hours of the feed are no longer available as usually done. Don't know why.

This latest video (by Building Integrity - Structural Engineer) explains how the slab likely sheared off from the columns, causing the building to collapse. It clearly shows the signs of shearing from samples taken from the slab in previous slab testing.

He thinks the concrete degradation around the rebar would have been caused by damp/moisture - due to the uneven nature of the degradation.

The video is 27 minutes of easy to understand explanations.

It’s time to go. Everyone who lives at the Regent Palace condominium saw the destruction at Champlain Towers, less than six blocks away, and they don’t need to be forced out. They’re leaving or they’ve already left, voluntarily.

[...]
The building was constructed 70 years ago on the beach at 93rd and Collins. The residents hired their own engineering firm to inspect the property, before the Champlain Towers collapse, and the report came back a couple of weeks ago showing severe issues.
[...]
Dokondke said it’s likely the property will be sold to a developer who will demolish Regent Palace and build something new in its place.

This builds upon the above YouTube by Building Integrity that @SouthAussie just posted. Both are building upon each little bit of information.

This one gave me an aha moment also too.

I had seen the RING video before, but never noticed that the big box in the RING video fell during those 10 seconds of the RING video where the person was on vacation.

Jeff goes through that RING video, and also points out that the Nir family and another family who escaped (and the RING video) all lived in the exact *same exact line vertically/first floor through 7th floor* that we have all read about. I had not realized that!

Wow - and I’m sure it won’t be the last.
It’s still unreal that this happened.

When Mia LaFont, 13, spoke at her late father's funeral service, she not only mourned Manuel "Manny" LaFont – one of the Champlain Towers South building collapse victims – but also her childhood home.

Unit No. 801 represents so much to Mia, her younger brother, Santi, 10, and dozens of other friends and family members who spent time in the condominium.

It's where he and his ex-wife, Adriana LaFont, shared a home with their children.

When they separated, it's where Manny continued to co-parent, playing host to the parents' drop-offs and pick-ups. Adriana had just picked up the kids from Champlain Towers hours before the tower's collapse on June 24…

"Never in a million years did I think the first funeral I'd ever attend would be my own father's," Mia said behind the lecturn. "My first home was at the Champlain towers in apartment 801. How could it be that the apartment my dad adored, the apartment we called our home, would later become a source of so much tragedy? Not only for us but so many."

"That apartment was not only my home but the home of so many others," she said. "I like to think my dad lived life. He got married, he had children, he celebrated little things. But the one thing he'll never get to do is walk me down the aisle. One of the last things my dad told me was to keep peace and love. That will forever stick with me."

Surfside victims: In No. 801, the LaFonts rejoiced. Then the tower fell.
