7:30 p.m.
Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida says the shooter in the attack on a high school in his state wore a gas mask and had smoke grenades.

The Florida Democrat said in an interview with CNN that he was briefed on the attack by the FBI.

Nelson says the attacker "set off the fire alarm so the kids would come pouring out of the classrooms into the hall. And there the carnage began."

Nelson says he did not know if the gunman had used the smoke grenades but he assumed that's why he had a gas mask on.

Have any of you ever read that book, "The Neon Bible?" Written at age 16 but published posthumously by John Kennedy Toole? Quick read, highly recommend.

(There is also a great album of the same name by Arcade Fire)

Thank you for the recommendation, flourish! Just downloaded it from iBooks to start reading it tonight.

he was in their shooting for over an hour MSNBC

The media has covered suicides in the last 40 years. Perhaps not intentionally. But about a couple decades ago they began a policy of zooming out so they wouldn't broadcast anything gruesome.

I am not talking about government censorship. LE should have the name available for any who want it. (Although I think they should refuse to publicize it in announcements).

And I think the media should print everything about the coward, - age, job, history, accounts from people who knew the creep, etc. But just voluntarily veer away from screaming out their names and blasting their faces all over the place. That's what fuels the next psycho.

If we all refuse to name them, change could occur.

I respectfully disagree!!

Someone with issues are not seeking tv coverage ( like this child) some are of course

it is just like the notion about more police at schools metal detectors are not going to stop someone who has been fantasizing about killing peers for a long time

who lack impulse control

have been bullied

I just like the backpack idea cause it would be easier to stop before it starts -- maybe

a lot of these are the machine gun ones I think they are hard to put in your pocket

mental illness also has a genetic component

and yet no one did anything to prevent this.

one student did call LE this morning --

depending on the circumstance, i agree to disagree. nancy lanza taught her son how to use guns. she's as much of a perpetrator as a victim.

we sleuth crimes here. so i'm sleuthing the parents. as the mods well know i'll do it off-thread.

where are the parents of the shooter? not trying to stir the pot but as a parent of three teenage boys...i want to know what their history is. and yes i DO blame the parents to some extent as i would feel full responsibility for mine.

ex: nancy lanza.

thoughts?

According to ABC news, Nikolas Cruz was adopted, and both adoptive parents are dead (prior to, and not in conjunction with, this tragedy). http://abcnews.go.com/amp/US/florida-school-shooting-suspect/story?id=53092753

"A family member of the suspect told ABC News that Nikolas was adopted by Roger and Lynda Cruz, both of whom are now deceased. His adopted mother died just last year."

The mother of one of the Columbine shooters, Sue Klebold, wrote a book called A Mother's Reckoning about how she's tried to come to terms with the horrendous act of her son. This was just published in the last couple of years and was on the NY Times bestseller list at some point. It's her attempt to understand what went wrong, what she missed, how it all happened.

I've not read it yet, but I just bought a copy of the ebook because your post reminded me that it did sound interesting.

In video, Sheriff says where the suspect was found (Coral Springs).

[FONT=&quot]After Cruz was apprehended, he was taken from the scene in an ambulance. Hours later he was later seen being led into a local police station wearing a hospital gown.

Believe it or not, but mass school shootings really aren’t on the rise. (they are however more deadly) They are just a disgusting part of american culture, and its been that way since the country was founded. SNIP.

I disagree. They are generally on the rise. Per Wikipedia, there was one in the 17th century in the US, 28 in the 1800's, 226 in the 20th century and so far, 18 years in, there have been 212 (as opposed to 226 for the entire 100 years of the century before).

They have generally risen this century as well:

2000 (5)
2001 (5)
2002 (7)
2003 (4)
2004 (0?)
2005 (5)
2006 (11)
2007 (5)
2008 (11)
2009 (7)
2010 (11)
2011 (7)
2012 (11)
2013 (26)
2014 (36)
2015 (21)
2016 (15)
2017 (19)
2018 (two months = 7).

I just want to clarify that school districts across the country are constantly doing things to increase safety. I work for a glass company and we have contracts with all of the school districts in our county, as well as with a large state university. The most recent focus is security film on the glass windows and doors. You can require IDs and passcodes all you want, but it’s more effective to do things to protect the school in case someone gets in the building, which can happen. The safety film is bullet resistant (not bullet proof- nothing is bullet proof) and practical.

It’s becoming very common in my area. To the posters who are saying schools aren’t doing enough, I recommend voting on passing the school budgets. People want safety and security, but many don’t want to go to the hip to fund it.

This post has nothing to do with guns or weapons. Safety film also helps protects against unarmed intruders, vandalism, hurricanes, blasts, etc. Just to be clear.

Vote for your school budgets.
