WTH? I mean... did the Uber driver not find it odd that some guy carrying a long rifle asked to be dropped off at a school?

It was probably tore down and inside a back pack/duffle bag.

ETA: never mind, I saw where he had the gun disassembled in his back pack prior to arriving at the school.

From news stories, he was carrying it in a duffle bag

Governor Rick Scott just said that he will make sure that no one with mental illness will ever get a gun.

PTSD is considered a mental illness, right? So, all the victims just lost their gun rights.

Hmmm, you'd think some other legislative action might work better to keep us safe.

Scott is being interviewed by Wolf Blitzer on CNN right now. He's doing a lot of disseminating. JMO, turning schools into fortresses is not a good solution.

Gov. Scott is a lot of talk. He's buds w/ POTUS so I doubt he will do much for gun control in Fl. Very touchy subject.
He was on local Fl. news today and he just kept saying he planned to "Focus on this and Focus on that and focus on
such and such. Never did I hear him say anything substantive.

I really agree with the Sheriff Israel's strong admonishment to the press to leave these kids alone. No running up and sticking microphones in their faces.

The exploitive nature of the press is so shameful sometimes.

I'm a special ed para at a high school. I attend general ed classes with students. Today we had a conversation in the "Global Issues" class. No matter how the young adults identified with certain political views they all agreed this was an impossible situation for everyone except the shooter. In the panic and cahos around them it was too easy for NC to be absorbed by the crowd during his escape. No one had the presence of mind to really see what was happening around them. No one thinks it's ever going to really happen to them. They wondered aloud... If the LEO did get to a point where he saw NC would he have taken a shot with all of the students running around him?

Mind you... These are thoughts from the kids in the class. I thought they were setting things pretty realistically.

most of the kids I have seen who were interviewed have been the most articulate and honest about what changes need to be made. These kids may have momentum started and will be a force to be reckoned with. They are not looking at this with blinders. “No t/p, please— action needed” (paraphrased)

IMO

You can't help those with mental illness unless they want help. If they stop treatment, whats your solution? He was over 18, an ADULT. His right to stop. Want to lock everyone up that has any type of mental illness and won't go to therapy or rebels against authority? That will be a VERY high population. Every child on drugs for ADD/ADHD, is that a mental disorder? PTSD, a mental disorder? depression? Its a slippery slope .... we will need 100X the mental health facilities (inpatient, involuntary) that we have now.

Bbm: agreed, if fact, I am so astonished that this is what it has come to?

Yeah, we are at the point where we might not have a choice but to turn our schools into something that looks more like a prison, not the land of the free. This is not the America I grew up in.

Exactly. It all sounds like a good fix until you drill down into the mechanics of it. It's not doable.

But, thoughts and prayers, and tomorrow we will make a new thread.

There are other choices. Security helps, but there are additional actions that will be even more effective.

We were talking about this at my office today, and MOO but deinstitutionalization played a significant role considering the time it began, and the decades when school mass shootings started to take place.

Thus I would add deinstitutionalization to the list in my previous post from last night as a contributing factor to mass shootings.

Wow, in less than 24 hours we already know more about this shooting than we do about the Las Vegas massacre.

He's pretty ignorant to bunch "mental illness" as one entity.

The top 2 common traits of mass murderers in the USA are being male and white.

Maybe we should start this discussion with those 2 traits and why some white males feel the need to kill multiple people at a time. Or why those 2 particular traits should excuse them or be less harsh on crimes they commit? Or do we live in a country where "Male White Privilege" is the underpinnings of many problems left unspoken of?

Maybe............."hate" should be a mental illness.

*end rant*

In 1984 we raised the drinking age at the federal level to save lives. So no one can tell me that boldness can't happen at the highest level.

This is no longer about our multitude of issues but is about saving lives. This is about a long hard look in the mirror.

These children are of an age when philosophy, spirituality, connections are made for life. As one young student said; 'we are the children, you are the adults'.
