I find it bizarre that we want to make schools more and more like prisons with metal detectors, armed guards, sniffing dogs....is this really the environment we want to to raise our children in?

My opinion and I'm fully aware it may not match the opinion of others.

I know. I work PT in a federal building. The security is serious and the officers are armed.

Doesn't mean I want that environment for students. Just my opinion.

We have them in Austin ISD but they focus on drugs and bombs. I see no issue with adding to the depth of our K9 squad.

Don't know if it's in the article but his friends started a GoFundMe account to help pay for numerous sugeries he needs.

I was thinking that it would be a nice gesture if a certain organization were to "earmark" a small percentage (1% or less) from membership fees to put into a fund for those maimed/killed by those using certain items that are promoted by that certain organization.

Might be a little controversial, I guess.

The teen was shot in his back and legs as he locked the door and blocked the doorway with his body, leaving the other 20 students unharmed as the gunman continued to fire.

Wow, I teared up reading this. I can't imagine what went through that poor 15 year old boy's mind as he was being shot 5 times. What an absolute hero he was to protect his classmates at the expense of his own safety. No one should ever have to go through that kind of terror and pain. I do hope people can help him with his recovery.

His own mother tried and tried and tried to get intervention and help and could not. No one even went to her funeral. I am proud of them for offering him shelter and food and refuse to make them the villains. They are victims, as well. The husband actually thought she had been killed by Nikolas. It is not fair to place the blame on them. That's just my opinion.

That’s my point. A nice gesture for someone who needed much more and well outside of their collective resources. If his Mother could not do it with the resources and bond she had, this was not to be engaged lightly by any means.

I scour social media and more when considering various and less weighted things. An independent service provider, IT, housekeeper, piano teacher, etc.

Most parents that I know are interested in who the friends or possible future boyfriends or girlfriends of their children might be. We formed an online parent-buddy system in our subdivision where we attend to things objectively for everyone’s benefit. Nothing is foolproof but knowledge is a real form of defense.

I would want to know about any issues with the previous person he lived with. Even just from his perspective on his behalf.

Hopefully this will help to serve others who consider extending a similar gesture for those in need. Its a serious responsibility and knowing what is best for the person is vital.

This drive to demolish places involved in tragedy seems to be quite a modern one. I suppose it's become part of the ritual of public mourning.

While it may not always be possible to demolish a site, I know in my case I had to move away from the home where my relative was murdered (in my yard, but she lived next door). I still cannot go back to visit the relatives who bought the house, and it has been nearly 50 years ago. This particular tragedy has brought back a lot of the feelings/sights/sounds, even the smells from that day, as though it just happened.

I cannot begin to imagine the emotional trauma for any of these students and teachers returning to the building where they saw friends murdered, nor the ones who heard but did not see.

I understand completely, emotional trauma is real. There will be many cases of CPTSD from this tragedy. I hope the efforts & funds will provide what is needed to move forward in the best possible way.

Snipped by me. This seems odd and gossipy to me. Sure, I get asking around about your kids new bf/gf/friend if you get a bad vibe. But to make an online community to do so? What if the person in question is outside your subdivision? And you can say it’s objective, until there’s that one mom or dad who has an axe to grind with the kid in question or the kids parent. JMO.

No, we don't know anything of the sort. People are just speculating. Looking at his face, I don't see the clear features of FAS. His nose doesn't look short, his upper lip doesn't look thin, etc.

All the laws in the world are not going to stop/prevent a demented individual from pulling a trigger. They will find a way to get their hands on a gun or assault rifle whether it be legally or illegally, IMO.

By all means, lets at least not make it easy for them.

I can't imagine how they even will be able to go back to the campus, let alone that building.

Speaking of his looks: something I learned today reading about FASD, not all children with it show the facial features.
The formation of the face in utero takes place within a very short period of time and if alcohol is consumed by mother during pregnancy, the period during pregnancy determines IF any facial features are deformed. In other words, the baby may
still be affected by brain/neurological damage, just not exhibited in facial deformity.

Oh gosh nooooooooo Latestforever! Not in that fashion at all. I’m firsthandidly familiar with that horrific regime. And we have had a host of people that have lived with us and currently so. All creeds & ages, various with medical needs, pregnant teens, non English speaking, addiction recovery...

Troubled individuals require certain things and that should be a priority for their sake. A house and food without the other serious needs being met is not good for anyone.
