Teachers struggle with new ‘default mindset’ after Florida shooting
by Elizabeth Chuck

The noise in the hallway could have been anything: a locker door shutting, textbooks dropping on the floor. But when he heard a sudden sound outside his classroom a couple of weeks after the Florida school shooting, Dan Greenberg, a high school English teacher in Sylvania, Ohio, assumed the worst.

"The immediate response is thinking about the shooting, thinking about what happened in Parkland," he said, adding that before the Feb. 14 massacre, "that was never the first thought in my mind."

Now, Greenberg said, he's hyper-aware of the possibility of more school shootings.

"That's scary to have that as the default mindset," he said...

Locked doors, wasp spray and fear: Teachers describe their classrooms in Parkland's aftermath

Nearly one month since a gunman walked into Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida and killed 17 people, teachers and students across the country are still trying to resume everyday life in the classroom. On the outside, there's ongoing partisan debate around stricter gun laws and school safety precautions — including whether educators themselves should be armed. But what does everyday life look like in American classrooms? Here's what teachers across the country said in response to an NBC News questionnaire asking what has changed since the shooting — and how the kids are handling the aftermath...

This is a 10 year old blind boy with autism performing. The birth Mom a drug addict, fortunately extended family took a heartfelt interest in raising him. You can get the gist without watching it in its entirety.

Ethan Trieus (senior at MSDH) gratitude is perhaps another good example for making changes that are needed in the mental illness community. He attributes his successes to his family’s support. He has been interviewed and has made appearances on national networks.

OT (a bit) ...
So the Judge ordered the video to be released for transparency.. FREE of charge?
Ha! Thought the same thing. Free. As public information should be. (For those who don't know, a judge is trying to decide how much he will charge to release some of the Las Vegas records from the shooting)

Prosecutors seeking death penalty in school shooting
Curt Anderson, Associated Press

Miami – The former student charged with killing 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last month will face the death penalty, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Nikolas Cruz, 19, is scheduled for formal arraignment Wednesday on a 34-count indictment, including 17 first-degree murder charges. Cruz’s attorneys have said he would plead guilty if the death penalty was not pursued in the Valentine’s Day massacre...

NC apparently was willing to plead guilty on all the charges if the death penalty was off the table. I wonder what he will do now? I am guessing his attorneys will try to get some mental evals and claim NC is not competent.

It is all so imcredibly sad to me. He was such a cute baby. In the womb, he was assaulted by who knows what.

As a toddler, he has noticeable problems. Dad dies. Mom tries to give him away.

Teased throughout school. All kinds of issues.

Then he kills 17 and destroys the lives of everyone who is related to those children and affects the lives of children all over the US who live in fear that they may be next. And of course the parents who worry about sending their children off to school.

What a horrendous nightmare.

Such hope and happiness the mother had.

I wonder how far along the bio mother was before she got drug tested

This is an interesting read on Howard Finklestein. Once an addict and rebel himself “EX-PARTY MONSTER”

“No person exemplifies Broward County’s raging clash of cultures better than the county’s top public defender, Howard Finkelstein. He is, at once, an unabashed proponent for human rights, a diminutive loudmouth, a champion for the poor and mentally ill; a tanned, ponytailed, ex-party monster; a grateful man of God; a television personality; and an unwavering voice of reason in a town where men of his character are in short supply.

“Finkelstein says he developed his sense of ethics as a teen in the 1960s. He earned his law degree from the University of Miami in 1978. He then blossomed into a “hot-shot young lawyer representing drug cartels” and developed a taste for drugs and alcohol himself. After crashing his car while also carrying cocaine and prescription pills, he pleaded guilty to drug possession charges in 1987.

"The fact that someone like me, who was addicted to drugs, an ex-hippie, involved in the antiwar movement and Black Panther movement, the fact that the county let me be part of the decision-making process — and cause as much trouble as I could with police and people of power — I have so much gratitude," he said. "I got to live my dream because of the people of Broward County."

A hearing just wrapped up in court to determine if NC has adequate funds available to pay for his legal defense.
NC was there, sat quietly w/ head and eyes down only looking up sporadically.
Defense atty. stated a probate atty. has been appointed and they are investigating all assets at this time. His def. atty.
asked for new hearing in 30 days to report back on finances.
Hearing set for April 11, 11:30am.
When I find a link I will post.
PS/ NC 's hair is getting a little bit shaggy, looks like he hasn't had a haircut while in prison. He looked pale, thin
and very stoic.

[h=1]Facing death penalty, school shooting suspect in court[/h]
https://www.fox4now.com/news/state/facing-death-penalty-school-shooting-suspect-in-court

In an email Tuesday, Finkelstein said Cruz is "immediately ready" to plead guilty in return for 34 consecutive life sentences.

"We are not saying he is not guilty but we can't plead guilty while death is still on the table," Finkelstein said.

Prosecution response to offer was to ask the judge to set the trial date. Includes video of the hearing.

I wonder, what does this mean -we can't plead guilty while death is still on the table-? Is that something legal, like nobody can plead guilty if death is on the table, OR does it mean the shooter will not plead guilty until death is removed? Is the defense saying to the prosecutor how bad do you want to check the win column under guilty? Also, if this does go to trial will we be able to watch it?

I do not understand how the defense lawyers can represent Cruz until the courts figure out if Cruz will get any monies from his parents estates, when and if there is enough to pay for a private attorney of Cruz’s choice.

To start bargaining for ‘life if admitting to guilt with no DP’, then find out the wrong lawyer, court appointed or private, is representing Cruz, will only confuse and make the process longer. Might as well wait and get the money issue settled first, then get the correct attorney.

When listening to MSNBC at noon today, the Judge was confused. She is having Cruz refill out an indigent form again to start with. Prosecutor is confused and so is Defense. They wanted the Judge to know about possible money.

There also is a NEW estate lawyer for Cruz’s moms estate which includes the husbands estate. A court order was issued to the old estate lawyer to hand over all info from the estate of mom and dad, to the new estate lawyer. From what was said Cruz can have insurance checks issued to him now, but he is allowed only to see his lawyer...so his current lawyer said Cruz has no way to take care of any money business while in jail. Very very confusing. I think trying to add up amounts, Cruz may get $25,000.00 now and who knows what else. That was confusing trying to listen to that!

Also reporter said, Cruz’s brother and ‘host’ family were in court.

If anyone can link to MSNBC article noon today I would appreciate it as I am on Ipad and cannot link.

The defense attorney is just saying that they are not going to agree to plead guilty until the prosecution agrees to not seek the death penalty. I believe I heard this morning that the prosecutor would probably agree to that. It would make sense. No reason to drag all the families through a painful trial. So I doubt very much this will go to trial.

The probate issue may take a little while so the court may not want to wait to see if Cruz can afford his own attorney. He has no money right now, so he is entitle to the public defender.

BBM

The prosecution has indicated they will NOT agree. They will seek the death penalty.
