Well, it's simple enough, really.
Kids and teens and young people who are considered high risk should really come under mental or physical health.

Violating their CIVIL rights by applying ludicrous and outrageous legal penalties to their actions or lack of actions is both cruel and unusual and does not help the presenting problem, on the contrary it contributes to it and exacerbates it.

What a way to lead by example for those who are in the position of leading. THIS IS NOT THE WAY!

also quite possible he only said it in an attempt to help his brother feel better.. I seriously don't see girls queuing up.

It has been reported that he felt guilty for his neglect and bullying of his older brother, his contribution to Nik's ostracization.

My reading is that he was seeking to somehow counteract his previous behaviour..

Either way, it was no reason to make a mockery of the law by applying a ridiculous and impossible bond..

They could have contacted mental health services and requested an instay, an intensive counseling and therapy programme for this boy who had recently lost his mother and was dealing with the aftermath of his brother's appalling rampage..

How is he supposed to make sense of this?
What tools does he have at his disposal, mental, emotional or even physical to cope with a massive travesty?

He had few enough to begin with..

what will be the long term effect of this on his life?

He is not a "boy." Under our laws he is considered an adult male.

Jumping off your post...

I think the treatment of NC and ZC, and the reaction here among posters, is a perfect illustration of the complexity of dealing with kids who are potential threats. Safety vs.civil rights. We all want the NCs of the world stopped, but we all also decry the possible infringement of rights.

Is it possible to stop people who *may* one day be a danger to society, and still maintain our rights (at least as we now know them)?

Is it possible to have it both ways?

Obviously, based on what is being posted here, nothing could have been done to actually stop NC. Because until he did something like go shoot up the school, he had civil rights and nothing could have been done.

Collective punishment.
And from what we know of his mental and emotional state, could well be a death sentence..
This frightens me.
This is a sign of a deranged society.

I think people going and shooting up the school and then having fan clubs who admire that behavior are a sign of deranged society.

Of course that is deranged behavior. But there is also a lot of good in the world, and in our own society. The positive things tend to not make headlines the way scandalous/negative things do. Jmo

Detroit Police Chief James Craig on school threats: 'It's going to stop'
Chief says Detroit schools received 23 threats in 24 hours

DETROIT - Police Chief James Craig held a news conference Thursday regarding the recent string of threats made against schools within the city of Detroit.

Schools across the country have been plagued by a rash of school threats since the massacre that killed 17 high school students and faculty in Parkland, Fla. Since the shooting in Parkland, a total of 40 threats against schools were received by the Detroit Police Department: two bombing threats, 34 shooting threats, and four threats to shoot and bomb...

I don't think anyone here is saying that or believes this to be true.

Nikolas Cruz posted comments about how he aspired to be the next school shooter. He took pictures of guns and bragged about what he planned to do with them. He shared pictures of dead animals. He sent death threats to a classmate on Instagram.

Zachary Cruz rode his skateboard on campus after school had been dismissed. He doesn't own a gun and he hasn't threatened to harm anyone. The circumstances could not be more different.

Lawyer challenges Zachary Cruz bond, blaming 'hysteria'

http://www.sun-sentinel.com/local/b...ool-shooting-brother-bond-20180322-story.html

The “hysteria” that followed the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting cannot justify the “outrageous” bond imposed on Zachary Cruz in a misdemeanor trespassing case, his lawyer argued in court papers filed Thursday.

“Zachary Cruz should not be in a jail cell,” defense attorney Joseph Kimok said in a 17-page petition seeking a reduction in Cruz’s $500,000 bond. Kimok invoked the Constitution, the Founding Fathers and the Salem witch trials in his argument that the bond amount violated his client’s rights and cannot be allowed to stand.

His brother is accused of killing 17 people at that school. There is no reason for him to be there. That day he is accused of going there twice, first time when school was still in session.
Why some here want to treat is just like a harmless innocent behavior is beyond my understanding.

"In a court filing by the Broward County Sheriff’s Office, the agency revealed that Cruz was at Parkland school twice on Monday, entering the campus for the first time between 2 and 2:30 p.m. when classes were still in session."

Brother of Florida mass killer says he is being unfairly held for trespassing

https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.usatoday.com/amp/450603002

“Attorneys acknowledge the Cruz situation is no typical trespassing case, but they say that is precisely why the defendant’s rights have to be protected.

“It’s clearly a reaction the court feels the community wants to see, but it is excessive, ****it is unlawful, it’s guilt by association — our due process rights****begin to erode once we start traveling down this path,” said Huda Ajlani Macri, president of the Broward Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

UNLAWFUL is what it is.

Yea, and they're pretty well educated, too, and usually know what they're talking about.

In court on Tuesday, prosecutor Sarahnell Murphy said Cruz “has all the same flags present” as his brother — both lost their father in 2004 and their mother last November.
But unlike the accused school schooter, Zachary Cruz committed no crime worthy of such a high bond and stringent pre-trial conditions, Kimok said.

red flags appear to be many and so varied as to be superfluous....

I used this exact wording when telling my boss about the latest today. She asked me what I thought the reason for the judge's ruling was and I said, "I think it's because the community is feeling incredibly scared and traumatized... it's like mass hysteria."

I don't blame the community for feeling anxious and nervous. I think that's a natural reaction that any of us would have.... but they can't punish a guy for the scars that remain from wounds inflicted by his brother.

As opposed to judges and prosecutors?

Why was he showing up at the school where his brother inflicted those wounds? If he is let out, do you believe he won't show up back at the school again? Just on the day for which he was arrested he reportedly showed up twice at that school where he has no business of being.
